Closed in 2000, accessibility to the basement of Merle Hay Mall was permanently severed from the general public shortly thereafter. If not for a handful of photos and misplaced memories of past patrons, remembrance that the basement exists would quietly fade without objection. For now, the storefronts remain frozen in time.

    Still open, two years later. I like to think it's still around only because people love going to Chinex. Great bang for your buck food wise and people literally drive to the Mall just to walk in, order a bunch of Chinex for the family and leave. That and the mall-walkers are still a thing, I think.

    Hey I love the video but I had a question for you. Did you see any security room anywhere throughout the back rooms of the building? It’s set to be demolished but people are still getting in to explore and no one can find it.

    A dreamy shopping center turned into a dead man's pit. Sears and Younker's kept it alive.

    This is wild. I have core memories of going there to the McDonalds and the cinnamon roll place that were both down there. Damn, I'm old. I have the legit backrooms 10 minutes from my house.

    I live in independence and I remember going to the GameStop area and the hot topic area a lot and it's just looks a little sad to look like compared to something like Oak Park mall where there's thousands of people and thousands of cars in the parking lot compared to independence center where there's about a few dozen people and a couple dozen cars and that's it

    I used to be a security guard for Merle Hay Mall in early 2011. They guy that trained me took me down there and it was cool to see the basement and relive childhood memories. As you can see in the video, they use it as storage for Christmas decorations. They keep the big Santa chair, that the other guards at the time called "Satan's Throne" because of how creepy it looked down there lol. One thing that shocked me, is there is an abandoned animal slaughter house down there too. As far as I know (I was only shown one way to access it) you can only get to it through a door on the outside of the mall that is close to where Old Chicago used to be. Would be neat to see a video on that! There are floor drains where the blood would run down. I didn't believe it until my trainer showed me. (Edited to correct typos)

    I used to live in saint Joseph for a long time and I moved A month ago And before we moved we went to east hills and I kind of missed that place being filled with all the stores Also a parentally Also a apparently used hills is closing and turning into an office so all of the stores that were there Oh no closing down and moving over to our Oh no closing down and moving over to our target and old navy and Spencer's is I feel really sad that this is happening because my family is from around there and it just makes me really sad to see that everything is just going

    It comes down to safety, or the feeling it is or it isn't. That's what killed Bannister Mall, when the shoppers felt that their life was in danger going to the mall, they quit

    I remember this mall ...I remember getting a hot chocolate from Fredrick's which used to be located near where the old Burger King was ok that upper second level, going through here to get to the buses on Walnut, and I have eaten at the Hub's food court after classes when I was taking classes at Central Campus. It just brings back a lot of those memories. Now It's being demolished (or part of of it anyway) for some high rise condo. I wish this building or the part that's left standing would be refurbished and revamped...

    This is a great video and you show us without the annoying canned music snippet on repeat and no personal commentary or factoids. I was shocked, actually in shock, when I drove from NM to GA in 2022, and all of these formerly beautiful places I visited as a child all a roos the county resembled bombed out third world nations. This is pretty as compared to what I saw and unfortunately the ppl I met acted like cockroaches, I encountered maybe 5 ppl at most practicing their humanity. So 😓 but then so hopeful as everything returns to its source so I envision places like this all green and lush with patches of wild flowers alive, vibrant and blossoming like snowflakes on steroids once nature reclaims her own.

    My family was moving from WI to AZ back in 2006 and there was some mall that had a food court with a raceway theme to it. Not sure if it was in Des Moines or within IA, maybe a former mall that doesn't exist anymore. We had mechanical issues with uhaul so we took it to a sears auto, if that helps in the elimination process. I do remember the mall was 1/3 empty, a good portion of the stores were urban/street themed. Could of been in KC too but I don't remember.

      yea thats iowa, one of the last sears auto's to be around before went belly up. if you had a erry feeling in the mall then i can confirm its this mall, everyone complains of it, like your a light switch away from a horror movie.

    That Cost-Cutters has been vacant FOREVER! When I was a kid (so to speak) my first job was at the original Old Navy (circa 2000) and over Christmas one year, we actually had a short term lease on that store to use as a storage space for excess inventory, and I remember having to take several loads of boxes down there... and this was BEFORE the basement level was closed. There was a Chinese restaurant down there, and an alternative store called DV8 along with an entrance to the bowling alley (which is still open). It REALLY does just make me so sad when I think about it... remembering my first jobs there and the way the mall was in its heyday. If you didn't see it back in the 90's you never properly experienced it.

    • @elijahwilson1422
      @elijahwilson1422 2 місяці тому

      @@natedg78 I never went to that mall and only went to the ones on the Missouri side. I, two cousins and an aunt of ours went to the movie theater across the road from Antioch Mall and watched Ernest Goes to Camp. Also, an uncle of ours lived in Claycomo, which is pretty much down the road from Gladstone. I know the 1980s were far from entirely good, but I believe most of us that were alive back in that decade were better off than we are now. You can't even hang out with anyone most of the time anymore, or go to any social function without them having their nose stuck in their smartphone. Also, few people even know how to carry a conversation, let alone engage in one anymore

    Adding the police station has not exactly stopped the occasional brawls and shootings there. Unaccompanied youths are definitely what's killed every mall around KC. The Plaza got smart and brought in dogs and cops on horseback... until the ACLU showed up. They're still vandalizing dozens of the historic fountains and they're just boarding them up.
