Beyond RGB: Achieving Color Accuracy using Practical Imaging Methods, Leah Humenuck & Susan Farnand
Leah Humenuck presented a talk by her and Prof. Susan Farnand, as part of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) Rochester NY chapter seminar series, on 20 Nov. 2024.
Spectral imaging is a useful tool for cultural heritage imaging. However, it has traditionally been a high barrier to entry for many smaller and mid-sized institutions. A solution to this is the recent advancements of practical imaging techniques that allow turning a traditional camera into a spectral one using two different lighting conditions. Beyond RGB is free and open-source spectral processing software. We will describe the application and imaging approach to provide a practical and efficient way for small to mid-sized cultural heritage institutions to harness the capabilities that spectral imaging can bring to their documentation of collections.

Are there any books or notable references out there that I can read to get a better idea of what the various image quality metrics are and how they are typically allied? I feel like I just jumped into the middle of a conversion without any context haha

Gamma explanation is lacking. From Wikipedia: "gamma encoding was developed originally to compensate for the brightness characteristics of cathode ray tube (CRT) displays, that is not its main purpose or advantage in modern systems". In the present without CRTs: "Gamma encoding of images is used to optimize the usage of bits when encoding an image, or bandwidth used to transport an image", i.e. the bit budget is better optimized for higher perceived visual quality e.g. considering compression artefacts

This is wrong about RCCB. In Aptina's ClarityPlus technology, which really used a high-transmissivity Y due to not great inter-pixel isolation, we got about a 2-3dB improvement in SNR. The trick Wayne Prentice is missing, is that the noise between color channels is not completely uncorrelated, allowing you to use the C signal to denoise the neighboring R and B. The color reproduction was shown to be at least as good as a conventional Bayer sensor, both by analysis and in real-world tests. There were issues that blocked wide scale adoption. One is the non-standard processing, and need for the inter-channel denoise, that made the sensor unsuitable for use with standard phone APs unless an additional pre-processor was used. The other was increased anomalous optical crosstalk through the C pixel for light outside the acceptance angle of the microlens. This led to strong purple coloration in off-angle stray light (certain ghosts originating towards the end of the optical path).

If the benefit is very apparent then how do you explain why such sensors have not become widespread in the super competitive consumer market of smartphones? CT should be selected depending on illumination and the selection process always has failures. How is the color performance of ClarityPlus when an incorrect CT with high gains (or e.g. strong LUT) is used?

I am curious how the noise can be correlated. The overwhelming noise is photon shot noise. Each pixel is has it's own independent random Poisson process. It looks like you are suggesting Is there significant leakage between the pixels which causes the correlation. Wouldn't the color mixing require even stronger color correction matrix terms, thus further amplifying the noise.

Considering the Barten Curve om HDR standards like PQ2084; Its show in the definition that 12bit codewords would be "needed" to sample PQ targeting 10k nits level. By hardware perspective using ARGB 2:10:10:10 format would optimize both storage and compute. Then what is the better way to maintain information but compress it to 10bit? my estimation is abandoning limited code ranges so a 10bit full-range format could be enough but some adjustment of PQ max target like reducing from 10k nits to 8k.

From what I can tell the encoding standard is based upon the assumption that the source image data is noiseless and the only limiting factor considered is the human visual system. The point made in this talk is from an information content perspective, encoding RGB at 8 bits/pixel/channel is virtually lossless since the source signal information is limited by noise. In other words, the uncertainty induced by quantizing is less than the uncertainty due to photon shot noise. Stated another way, you don't need more bits than you have information in the image data. If your image data is noise free, meaning it was not produced by a standard photographic process, then we are now into an area that I have not studied. On the other hand, if it was digital camera sourced then perhaps the perceptual encoding standards are appropriate for intermediate computations, but may be overkill with regards to storage of image data directly from the camera.

Patrick, this is a terrific talk, what a tremendous amount of knowledge you're sharing - I'm on my second listen. I'm starting with a 4" telescope, DSLR and Photoshop and have now taken it out in the Utah desert twice. Still have a lot of learning to do, especially on dedicated astro cameras, narrowband filters and processing. Thanks for sharing this!
