Best way to check water heater’s heating elements & thermostats. And, cycle between the elements.
The best way to check the elements and thermostats of an electric water heater is when they are under load. Also, since one element runs at a time, learn how to cycle between the top and bottom elements.

Thank you for the video! If I flip-flop (or switch) the wires coming from the capacitor going to the pull-chain switch positions 2 and 3, will it just change the speed for switch positions according to the uF? Is it OK (safe) to do this?
How does it sense the temperature?

@@JustForYouDiy sweet as thanks man. I’m used to capillary thermostats! Cheers
Excellent, thank you! Best video on this topic I’ve found!

I'm interested in the details.
Thank you for the interest. The individual jar holder can hold a 1-5/8” square jar, typical spice and herb jar sold by Walmart. It has two countersink screw holes in the rear for mounting. Use of #6 x 3/8” flat head screws are recommended (Home Depot 872-578). As seen in the video, the mounting holes are accessible through the front two triangle holes. The left side wall of the holder is slightly narrower than the right side, this reduces the overall width when stacked next to each other while allowing for a thumb and index finger to grab the jar. The bottom of the holder has many holes including a hole at each corner to allow for ease of cleaning. Furthermore, as you can see in the video, there is a notch cutout in the front of the holder to reduce the overall vertical stacking height by allowing the jar to tip forward. The .stl file for 3D printing is for sale for $3.00 as long as the product is used for personal use and it is not sold. If you are interested in purchasing the .stl file, please let me know. Hope you found this information helpful.
My PRO1 thermostats screen went blank today. Opened up the compartment and there were no batteries in there. Is it possible that when it was installed, it was already “charged”? There is a wire going through it from the wall as well. I put batteries in the compartment and it’s fine now so I’m confused!
Most likely it’s powered by the 24V from the air handler, terminals C and R. Hope this helps.
@@JustForYouDiy thank you! Since this is the case, I shouldn’t need batteries then? Could there be something wrong with the wiring? I was planning on having someone come look at it tomorrow. When I take the batteries out, the screen goes blank after about 30-45 mins.
@@BlueEverAfterthis is the same exact problem I’m experiencing. Someone came and installed this new Pro thermostat and it didn’t have batteries. The next day it turned off and now it’s not working.
If it has a terminal marked “C” it is designed to get power from the AC’s 24V. Or, use batteries. The thermostat will work with either power source. In cases when the thermostat is powered by the AC’s 24V, the batteries become the backup power source. However, if AC’s 24V fails (bad fuse, bad transformer, bad wiring), the AC would not run. So, if the AC is running and the “C” terminal has a wire attached to it but the thermostat will not power up, wiring issue or thermostat issue. Using a voltmeter and measuring the voltage between “C” and “R” in normal condition you should get 24V-28V AC. Hope this helps. Here’s one of my videos going over the AC basics. I have a question: My GFCI outlet in the garage is dedicated to itself. There was a 2004 Whirlpool fridge there before plugged in and it never popped the outlet. I got a 2021 Samsung refrigerator. After plugging it in it trips the breaker as soon as the compressor begins to draw power. I plugged it into the laundry room outlet that is not a direct GFCI outlet, but on a circuited one and it works just fine. Do I need to follow your video to fix it?
Inductive load such as the motor in the compressor does not play nice with GFCI outlet’s circuitry. Age and MFG play a big role in this. That said, you could replace the GFCI outlet in question as its age maybe questionable. Or, follow the instructions in this video which will definitely fix it. I personally, don’t power a fridge with a GFCI or GFCI protected outlet. Hope this helps.

What if I just replace the GFCI outlet with a normal plug?
Of course, you can always do that. However, whatever is plugging into that outlet will not benefit from GFCI protection.
@@JustForYouDiy it’s in a garage. New freezer keeps tripping GFCI. Did away with the GFCI because it seemed pointless although its code. Electrician said it was a nuisance trip anyway. Thanks for the good video though.
The electrician is correct, almost all GFCI trips caused by a frige is a nuisance trip. The reason is because GFCI circuit used in the outlet does not like an inductive load (any device that has a coil of wire in it), such as compressor that is used in a fridge. The electrical noise generated by such devices most often trip GFCI outlets. Hope this helps to better understand the reason.
Great video! Q. Can a half hot let's call it (#2)receptacle work with only a black and white wires being feed from another half hot (#1)receptacle? Be4 swapping outlets they both worked half hot from switch. After replacing, only #1 works as half hot. #2 bottom is powered and top seems dead which is supposed to be the switched part with tab removed. Without tab removed #2 works like a normal outlet (not switched).
When I removing the tab on an outlet to create a switched outlet, ONLY remove the tab for the line and NOT the tab for the neutral. And, yes, one hot (line) that is switched can take care of both switched outlets.
@@JustForYouDiy little more info. I have 2 half hot outlets and 2 regular outlets downstream on this circuit. The 1st half hot seems to be the main outlet which has 3 sets of cables coming into the box. One is a 14/3, and two are 14/2. The 1st half hot outlet is working properly because its using the 14/3 wire. Cant get the 2nd half hot to work but it did be4. Q. How do I carry this hot traveler wire (14/2) to control the 2nd half hot outlet and one regular outlet downstream? Gold tab removed on second outlet and not on neutral. This has boggled my mind for days now. Thanks again..
Great explanation of this type valve. Very helpful. Thanks for posting!

Hey there! I know this video is a years old but it did help me with an issue I was having with my fridge so thank you!. It's been tripping since I moved in so I tried the method and the fridge is staying on now! As a note for future watchers, make sure your load and line aren't backwards to what it was in the video. My outlet had the line at the bottom so when I moved everything to the top like in the video, I was actually moving to the load so the outlet stopped working but the fridge was fine. Once I moved everything down to the line correctly, both are all good.
Glad to hear that you found the video helpful.

Can I do this method with a much larger hole?
I have used this method for repairing holes as large as 4”x4”. It may not be stable enough for holes larger than that. For larger holes, I use pieces of wood on the back for support. Hope this helps.

Best in youtube. Thank you. One question, my temperature knob can be rotated in one direction more than 360 degrees (can be rotated on one direction as much as I want), Is this okay? Feels like it has to stop in 90 degrees in one direction. Temperature is managed according to the position.
Thank you. Every one of these type of valves that I’ve seen the temperature knob rotates 360.
Not an issue with vinyl
👍
Glad I found this video. I've had too many leaks and have just purchased 3 of these for all three tubs in my house. Thanks.
Excellent. I believe your order was through Amazon. If so, it was shipped today.
Million dollar idea something that goes at the bottom of the fence to cap it off.
To close the gap to keep debris out, you can add plastic edge trim for landscaping (available from HD and Lowe’s) to the inside.
Also a gap allows you to easily weedwack the grass under the fence pickets
👍
Use treated and painted fencing material. Done right it would be fine touching the ground for many years before thinking about maintenance.
I usually use a 2x4 as a spacer/guide to keep a 1.5” gap at the bottom. This prevents rotting and warping.
I alway run PT 2x6 at the dirt line.
👍
This is why you place a rot board on the bottom horizontally
👍
You can also treat the bottom to help prevent rot
👍
If vinyl rots it will be long after I’m dead.
Non-wood material is best if you can afford it. If not, leave a gap to extend the wood’s life.
Seen a great many fences put up… never seen anyone leave a gap
It’s a common mistake not leaving a gap. It will end up rotting where it is touching the wet soil.
Catch 22: if there is a gap between the fence and the dirt, my dog will escape from it. Guaranteed.
Gotta go with the white plastic fences or chain link. My husky would destroy this wood fence
To close the gap to keep debris out or dog in, you can add plastic edge trim for landscaping to the inside.
The fence rots away at the bottom and creates its own gap😊
Then it would look jagged and ugly. Do it right by using a 2x4 as a spacer to leave 1.5” gap at the bottom.
huh. never thought of this, it isn't a thing in the desert.
.
Apologies, but thats not exactly true, and the truth counts. When building a fence we use specific materials that do specific things, we use a lot of redwood and cedar, for 2 reasons mostly, the 1st is it is rot resistant, it doesnt get water or moisture damage, it ahsorbs and repells water until it reaches an equilibrium, red wood and red cedar to be exact, and number 2 is cedar is a natural bug repelant, any kind of cedar does this. Redwood posts and cedar pickets is the best built wood fence possible
Thanks for the comment. Many people who install their own fence just use pickets sold by HD or Lowe’s. That said, when using that material (1 in. x 3-1/2 in. x 6 ft. Kiln-Dried Spruce Pine Fir Dog-Ear Fence Picket), less than $2/picket, it’s best to have a gap between fence and the dirt to avoid rotting. I’ve seen it too many times.
@JustForYouDiy knowledge is power, the more you know is better. Especially doing DIY. Teaching what materials to use and why is far more important for DIY than the cheapest methods. Pine and spruce are used in dry arid climates where there is little water or rain. Cedar and redwood are used in areas where there is a lot of humidity and precip, also treated posts are often used or moisture barriers are used on posts before setting, this is why a fence buried in the dirt and pickets on the ground last at least 25 years
I can tell you from experience, for most DYI fence installations it’s much easier to leave a 1.5” gap (2x4 as spacer) at the bottom and buy what HD offers and keeps in stock than look for material that can withstand the dirt.
@JustForYouDiy depends where you live. I can get both where I live at HD or Lowes, but if you have one, a lumberyard is the best. And just because you're doing DIY does not mean you have to be cheap about it, the only thing you should ever save on when doing DIY is the labor, you are not going to get materials cheaper unless you buy cheap materials.
yeah that's gonna rot
Correct. I’ve seen it too many times.
Surprised they haven’t made some sort of bottom thing for this reason
To close the gap to keep debris out you can add plastic edge trim for landscaping to the inside.
I always use a kickboard I prefer 10in redwood
Im trying to keep the earthworms out😅
If you really need to close the gap to keep debris out, add plastic edge trim for landscaping to the inside.
