This week, we celebrate Jesus being presented by his parents in the temple. There, Simeon and Anna speak words of blessing over the child. But Simeon also says some things directly to Mary- about a sword.

Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah to open his ministry and reads a passage that is full of verbs that free and give hope. The mission of God is about making people whole and well- then and now.

Today's reading is Jesus' first sign in the gospel of John: turning water into wine. It seems an odd sign, in that no one is healed, no people are fed, no storm calmed. Yet it is the first of only seven signs in John, so it must be important. But why?

Isaiah speaks some of the most beautiful words to the exiles about how God has formed them, called them by name, and they belong to God. Early Christians saw in this something of the truth in baptism. How are the two connected?

Lol😂. Good job guys. Here I am, four years later, searching for hymns for our church service(thanks to the pandemic, we only have an organist once a month so we rely on UA-cam Music) and I come across your video. Your harmonies are spot on. I must say guess I will continue my search. Some of the words, like YOURS, don’t match our handbook, so I must press on!
JESUS OPPOSED FORCING PEOPLE TO STAY IN SEXUAL UNIONS, SEPARATING THOSE ALREADY IN LOVE AND PREVENTING ANYONE ELSE FROM FINDING IT! There are so many preachers and teachers today who twist the meaning of Jesus' words about sexual unions (what was going on in his day and what he said is how it was supposed to be) in order to force people who are not in love to keep sharing a bed! In spite of the sexual enslavement that was the norm in Jesus' day, he explained what was God's original plan when He created sex and sexual attraction. When Jesus was confronted by religious legalists who were trying to entrap him in the question--WHEN is it OK for a sex slave owner to PUNISH a female sex slave, by BANISHING her, that is, by selling her off to some other sex slave owner who might use her in a brothel or do worse, all the while never seeing her children again or, if she had a true love (usually another slave in the same household), never to seem him again either...Jesus said, "Never!" In other words, Jesus turned the table on those trying to get him to endorse sexual slavery and the cruel treatment girls and women so enslaved received! In effect, he said, "If you're going to treat girls/women as if they are your sexual property, then you have to take care of them for life...and that includes, allowing them to have a true love if they find one, even within their cruel circumstance! We know this to be the case because, he then tried to explain to his disciples, "In the beginning, it (the way human sexually was conducted) was not like this!" He went on to quote from Genesis, where it was explained God's original intention--that men and women, upon reaching adulthood, would become sexually attracted to each other, begin having intimacy and, as a result of this wondrous creation of God, experience a deep emotional bond (what we call falling in love), so profound that the writer of Genesis called it becoming "one flesh." Then, Jesus proclaimed, to any sex slave holder who was contemplating the separation of his slaves who had fallen in love by selling them off separately, "What God has put together, let no man put asunder!" By implication, Jesus was also prohibiting sex slave owners from preventing their slaves from finding real love if they had not already. Of course, it would be many centuries before the general practice of slavery and female sexual slavery would be banned and for girls and women to have the practical ability to be extricated from sexual bondage without suffering far worse treatment! But the principle Jesus laid down--sexual unions must be based on mutual choice only--became the foundation for the progress toward liberating girls and women in most parts of the world. However, there are more than a few men who long for the day when girls and women can, once again, be re-enslaved, and more than a few of those attempting to bring those days back, are doing so in the name of Jesus! So, how despicable it is when, today, false preachers and teachers take the words of Jesus, and turn them inside out in order to make it appear that Jesus endorsed sexual slavery after all!!! They mistranslate sex slave holder as "husband," female sex slave as "wife," the real love some female sex slaves found with another slave as "adultery," and the PUNISHMENT they levied as "divorce." Why? In order to commit another form of sexual enslavement, making married couples feel like they have to remain together though they have no love between them! As a result, so much more suffering occurs! There is no closure. Abuse is much more likely. Alcohol and drug addiction increases. Lawyers take advantage once they finally do part ways but are so much more embittered by then. The emotional damage soars, and for many years afterward, they are still made to feel like they had committed some grave error, and some of these false preachers and teachers even tell them they are to remain alone for rest of their lives!!! But Jesus made it clear that God is the author of real love, and no one should ever get in the way of anyone who has finally found it or is hoping to!
