Hot Summer QRP DX
Enjoying a beautiful day in the Rockies with my Yaesu FT-818 in the back yard on July 5th, 2022. Last night we watched the fireworks for awhile, then I set up my Celestron NexStar 8se telescope and enjoyed the crescent moon's craters in their shadows. Perfect.
I set up my Chameleon F-Loop 2.0 antenna and tuned around for some strong signals.
I'm using a SOTABEAMS SPComm-100 mike compressor and Palm Radio Mini Keyer Paddles.
It's so sad that Palm Radio is out of business now. They made awesome QRP keyer paddles. I have both their Mini and Pico paddles. In my humble opinion, if either comes up on eBay, click "Buy" without a second thought! Here's a link to the Mini's eHam.net review: www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=1472
A little while later, I had a nice slow-speed CW QSO on 14.059 MHz using 2.5 watts to Round Rock, Texas, with Rick, W5FKW. That's about 1,000 miles from here in Utah. Sorry but I didn't get that one recorded on video.
It was a fun day: Temperature in the mid-90's, but humidity was only about 10%. Typical for life at 4800 feet. Yes, it is definitely a dry heat!

3 Antennas Compared On-Air: Hexbeam, Butternut Vertical, Offset-Fed Dipole
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
Here I compare the receiving ability of my 3 antennas on the air using a Japanese ham as the signal source. The antennas are connected to my Elecraft K3 via my Elecraft KAT-500 tuner/switch. The 3 antenna positions are: 1: Butternut HF-9V vertical ground-mounted over a field of 48 radials. It's about 20 feet from my house, in a relatively open, grassy area. This started out as an HF-6V that I u...
WC8VOA in Ohio on my Kenwood TS-440 from Utah

Listening to WC8 Voice Of America, a ham club transmitting from the VOA relay station museum in West Chester, Ohio. I am using my Kenwood TS-440SAT. I've owned several TS-440's, and even though it's a product of the late 80's, it doesn't feel old or obsolete. This model Kenwood is known for its very smooth transmit and receive audio. You are listening to the built-in speaker on the top of the r...
Field Day 2022 Xiegu G90 CW contact has keyboard problems?
Переглядів 2402 роки тому
My FD 2022 contact with N6IPD in Southern California (operating 2A ORG). Looks like the operator had some keyboard or automation issues. Believe me, we all have those moments! Contest-style operating can be stressful and demanding. Maybe somebody spilled a soft drink or bumped him. All I can say is that I've been there, got the T-shirt! Note the pretty decent accuracy of the G90's CW decoder (t...

Temporary Mag-Loop Antenna in the Back Yard, and the Mounting Location for my Vertical (Part 2 of 3)
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 роки тому
Here is the only HF antenna I have up right now (really missing my Hex Beam!), an MFJ-1788 Magloop. Using the inside controller box I showed previously, you move the plates of a tuning capacitor with a motor that's controlled by voltages sent up the coax. It tunes from 40 through 15 meters, giving a very high Q antenna in a super-small package, compared to a 64-foot long 40 meter dipole anyway....
QRZ Lookup of AI6QZ Heard on the Mag Loop Antenna (Part 3 of 3)

I show a brief lookup of the ham that was calling CQ on 40 meters CW in Part 1 of this set of three videos, and explain how interesting I find people's web pages on QRZ.com. If you're a ham, you already have a fledgling web page on QRZ that you can fill in, add photos, or share info with others. Very easy to use. In the case of Dave, AI6QZ, I find that he lives on a boat in San Francisco, and i...
First Look at My New Ham Shack/Lab in Pleasant Grove UT (Part 1 of 3)

Yes! It’s a complete mess! We’ve only been here for a few weeks, and things are still in boxes everywhere. This is definitely not how my shack is going to look, but I wanted you to see “behind the scenes” before I get it all pretty and shiny whenever that will be. We also get to hear another Dave, AI6QZ, calling CQ on the 40 meter QRP calling frequency, working from some portable location near ...
My first QSO using the Xiegu G90 20 watt HF radio, with surprising results!

My unedited out-of-the-box first three QSOs. Starts with VE7SNC answering my short CQ on 20 meters. Sorry for the shaky and sometimes wandering camera! It just occurred to me to grab the camera after our QSO started. My CQ was also answered by two more stations: W9LCM in Indiana and K1IEB mobile on a simple HamStick near Austin, Texas. When I say "unedited" I really mean it! I started calling C...
