My father was an avid amateur cine film enthusiast in the 1960s and 1970s, shooting Standard 8 film on a Sankyo 8CM camera. I am gradually digitizing and lightly editing his films. As he was also a keen amateur historian about his home in North Wales several of the films include views of the landscape and the changes happening as the area became more accessible and developed.

Package Holiday in Ibiza October 1968

Two families set off on a package holiday to the sun on the isle of Ibiza. This was a 49 guineas per person holiday (£50 approx) but I guess under 16s were half price. Staying at the brand new Hotel Helios across the bay from San Antonio town centre, spending time in Ibiza town and on the beach at Calla Bassa.

Back in the days when air travel was glamourous and people dressed smartly, a visit to a foreign destination such as Amsterdam was a very special occasion.
A new Grid Transformer for Trawsfynydd Substation circa 1966
Переглядів 546Рік тому
This film charts the delivery by sea and road of a large transformer for the grid substation located at the Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station site. The shipment occurred in the mid-1960s when both the Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd Power Stations had been recently opened. The route from Porthmadog crossed the Cob, through Minfordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, Maentwrog and up the 'newly' widened road to Traw...

I used to visit my Granny and Grandad and my Aunt Margaret Guest JP during the school holidays until my RAF Father was posted abroad. Happy Days !
Hyfryd hyfryd.Thank you Peter.
You are very welcome.
Any one remember the old picture house opp the big park.and the old swimming bath with oval tin roof.and across from the coach bus park there was a bit land with dumped 1950 cars .we played there most times and of course ..@ Pen bank And the other one up the hill next to hospital Great days of my life .Was pure Welsh speaking them days .regards to all.
That looks like an old Clyno? Not so many of those around..
I visited there in the mid 90s. Seeing this brought back fond memories. Many of the buildings look the same, although now catering to the tourist trade.
You are correct. Where the slate trucks are shown going towards the mountain is I think where the Llechwedd train now runs into the mountain. Much of the workings were developed for tourism either as Gloddfa Ganol or Llechwedd in the 1970s and 1980s. Many thanks
This must be at least 1964 as that's when the new connection from North to Central stations opened.
Thanks for the feedback. On reflection I think 1964 does seem more accurate, as the newness of the A496 would also tie in with the the opening of the Power Station in 1963 and the sale of new Hillman Imps at Central Garage also puts it after May 1963.
Absolutely wonderful scenes at the end of the incline and Llechwedd/Oakeley. Thank you for sharing.
Thank's Colin, I can't believe how many have now seen the film (1K) way more than my Dad could have hoped for. Peter
What an absolute TREASURE! Diolch yn fawr iawn am ei rhannu. Thank you!
You are very welcome. My father used to do local history talks to the WI etc in the Penrhyn and Port area, I suspect this video has already reached more people in a couple of weeks than he could have dreamt.
@@peterhughes575 I am secretary of the Blaenau History Society. I am sure that the video will be of great interest to them. If we show it, they are sure to ask about who took it. What was your father's name? Where did you live?
@@garethbryneithin He was Bodfel Hughes of Penrhyndeudraeth living in Trem-yr-Wyddfa.
Soeey my Welsh is terrible but did you say Thanks a lot for sharing with us?

Great video Peter, Your Dad made some of Bron y Garth Tramp Cells I remember, and quite a few of the surrounding area, Would love to see them, I lived next-door in No15, and still do, Hope you are well, looking forward to seeing more ,Regards Dave.
Hi Dave, greetings from the Cotswolds. I have a box of about 20 films and a dozen VHS tapes as he was very active as you know with the history of the locality. I will do his Antur related film next with the YOP scheme he managed, as it is an interesting record of those times. I'm pleased you enjoyed the film. Very best wishes and say hello to Beryl. Peter
Thanks Peter, are you able to upload more of your father's films?
Hi John yes I’m going through his cinefilms and digitizing them. Most are family holidays but a few are to do with Merionethshire.
