Timber Frame Design & Build Channel

This Timber Frame Design & Build Channel is dedicated to exploring the beauty of timber framing in design, crafting and installation for timber frame homes, patio covers, structures, trusses, gables - all of the elements of gorgeous exposed post and beam.
Whereas many channels on UA-cam are more directly related to specific tooling and timber crafting ("how to" cut a mortise and tenon, cleaning up housings on posts with a slick...etc) this channel is instead more focused on the aesthetic design and overall setting of the timber elements. You may see how timber remodels aka "timber makeovers" can have a stunning affect on visual beauty - not to mention appraised resale value!
Certain home-owners, real estate developers, architects, engineers, builders and designers can see the various techniques employed to incorporate post and beam into housing projects - in a "hybrid" construction fashion.

MODERN Home Gets a 'Traditional' Timber Touch
"Modern" as a floor plan style is popular, but can risk looking "dated" after a decade or so. With this in mind, bridging the gap between modern and traditional can help provide a timeless look. This hybrid timber frame house plan first went more modern, but throughout the 3D rendered design process, the final design was brought back to retain more traditional home styles. The end result? That's up to you, but the homeowner and visitors have been very happy with it. See it in the walkthrough or view photos on our website.

Walk-Through a Timeless Modern Rural Timber Home
Переглядів 9324 місяці тому
This modern-inspired home incorporates both surprise and familiarity in its floor plan design. With a hybrid-timber package building out the entry, interior overhead beams, as well as a post-and-beam back porch, this home has just enough "modern" to it, while keeping with traditional aspects. The rustic strength of the large timber posts bring all the warmth necessary, while against a backdrop ...
Timber Home Design BREAKDOWN: "Timber Integration & Canvas Prep"
Переглядів 3544 місяці тому
Timber frame design on a floor plan takes into account much more than just "lick-n-stick" of post and beam elements to a house blueprint. "Canvas Prep" is the stage where every aspect of the home is considered in relation to the addition of the exposed beam construction. For instance, a roof line may need to be adjusted to best feel "secure" without feeling "looming." In this video, you'll see ...
What Business Strategy Can Teach Home Design

Do you have any strategies you'd like to share in the comments? Business strategy concepts are surprisingly applicable to the journey of choosing and designing a custom floor plan for your home. There are parallels between the often-described strategy of Southwest Airlines and custom home building. Although the strategy of SW Air engages only a certain audience, it fits for them. In the same wa...

What Timber Frame Design and the Starbucks Logo Have In Common
Your channel has all the information I’ve been lacking that I needed to supplement my understanding of timber framing and wood in general, made my month when I discovered your channel today, and theres all this knowledge for free, thanks again it really helps cut down my researching time and affordable since i’m only 19, hopefully in the future i’ll get the book soon too, not to mention the animations to help me understand, its like finding a treasure trove of
This vid is from the perspective of the end consumer. All of the wood I have reclaimed from barns has been free from my own sweat equity. My next venture is going to be to construct our next house from primarily reclaimed materials. So don’t DIY = $$$$. DIY = Almost free
Well firstly the word "cabin" refers to the dwellings slaves lived in on plantations so...it might be an idea to move away from that term. A log home however can be a small four corner structure in a "chalet" style or a massive multi corner log mansion with post and beam/dovetail /diamond notch full scribe details and corner joints throughout the building, hence, the hybrid log home. Settling is required for scribed homes and is all but gone in the first five years. A properly built log home does not require chinking, the lateral groove is shaped accurately to the log below. A foundation built with consideration for keeping the lower logs away from the ground by at least 18" is a good idea. Also plenty of overhang on the roof is a game changer for maintenance and longevity. A full-sribe saddle notch log home shell of doug fir with eight corners should take a skilled crew of three about three months to complete including log roof members. I greatly appreciate a good timber frame and have met some skilled Zimmermen. Lets be clear here, this is a video for advertising timber frame homes with possible log accents. That's ok too. The upbeat energy of the fellow here is very positive. A full scribe log home requires more time and investment from the homeowner, that is true.
No offence meant to this gentleman here but I just heard a LOT of words describing just some minor, very predictable, and easily reperable problems. Really nothing fuss about but I guess you need to make videos.
"...it's going to be OK "
May I send you a video of a central support beam that may have an issue requiring repair? I'd like your opinion.
In BC here tamarac (larch) is used as it’s straight and very strong. Unfortunately it leaks sap for about 2 years.
Big old ponderosa pine is tough
What a crock of shit... Spruce & pine are great for framing and log cabins. Just because you get shitty, badly dried spruce in Canada & U.S, doesn't make it bad. In Finland and other Nordic countries we use spruce almost exclusively in all framing, joist, walls, cladding, window frames, doors etc -spruce & pine and none of the issues he moans about -what he should wonder is; why is that so? How come the North American wood quality is so shitty in comparison to European despite using the same and almost same species of wood in the same applications? In Europe we have large buildings made of spruce & pine that are literally over 1000 years old.
I live in a 200 year old timber framed house built with hemlock. All the old houses where I live are hemlock.
You can tell this guy built lot have been timber faller 43 yrs and part time builder have came same conclusions on his opinions lot people will have small logs under 20 want beams they need be heart free
The best species is the one you have. Count your blessings we are not in Europe where big timber is worth more than gold now. Big, clear wood is a treasure, regardless of species. It can all be made to work.
pin oak OK?
What's your take on Sweet Gum? Here in GA, I we send prime logs to the landfill. Gum is used in rail ties, other than that it's useless for boards bc it twists. But bc it's used for rail ties I'm curious how will it perform in beams
Like a Chevy dealer telling you why not to buy a ford lol
Let me guess - you sell stuff that competes with log cabins. No conflict of interest there.
Any thoughts on Australian hardwood / eucalyptus varieties
Great advice
Very helpful info, I wish you could do a video on what to look for or how to inspect a log house before purchasing. I am looking at a 10 years old log house and it would be nice to know what to look for. Thank you
Every home has issues. Bought a builder home so as not to worry about repairs. Wrong! Installed wrong water heater, AC issues, electrical issues, etc etc etc.
So, im located in interior alaska and have 55 acres of land that is primarily white spruce. I planned on harvesting the biggest ones (60-100 ft) and curing them for two years or so before the project. Are you saying that that is not a good idea? The doug fir here is $1200-$1600 per stick for a 12"×12"×20' which is a lot.
Very good explanation . Thank you .
So basically dont build a log cabin
Good considerations. I think one of the huge advantages of mass wall log homes is that they avoid the wall cavity issues of traditional stick frame homes (timber frame as well). Timber frame homes are obviously very beautiful, but they effectively utilize the same commercial materials of stick frame homes, it's just the framing is different (i.e. sheeting/drywall, etc). . You still have wall cavities, if you have a water issue you end up with mold, you end up with poor air quality. It is not discussed often enough how poor the air quality is in modern houses, or houses built the last hundred years, and all the madness around sealed houses is making it worse. All that to say, he's making sound arguments, and they are worth considering
Great advice, thank you Sir.
Curious to how different oaks shrink. Red oak has ventricles perpendicular to the length versus white oak that are parallel.
The best would for timber fraiming is the pines that lose it needles each year .
I also have been doing taking down old post and beam barns since I was 9 with my dad and I am hand huning a small house from Caneticut timber to live in for up in New Hampshire .
😮l0
Thanks.
It sounds like a lot of the "no" species would only really be problematic when fresh. If you have properly aged timbers, do the same negatives still apply?
Traditional homes 50 years? Look in Europe where you can find buildings from 1800-1900 etc. I would say a properly made house lasts at least 100 years.
Hey Dear I saw your videos and was impressed by the quality of your content. However, after analysis, I noticed there needs to be improvement for getting more views and subscribers. You are working hard but the main motive to reach an exact audience is not fulfilled. You are working for your audience if the video can't reach them. That's a waste of your energy and time also. I will show the problem in your video and share how to fix it. Only say ‘yes’ if you want to grow your channel.
Thank you for the wonderful video and sharing your knowledge with us.
Always has to be a Negative Nancy telling you his gripes.
Unique presentation for house design.
Ugly house over-all. Not impressed with redo, alot of monet spent with no real improvement. Whats with the goofy timberframe over the small garage door? Balance???? So you changed color and removed brick and changed roof and new timberframe porches for not much gain. Sorry 😞
what about white ash
I just want the outside to look like a cabin
My entire state feels wrong 😑 and I’m not talking my mental state either im talking about what state I actually live in
This was excellent. I'm glad you mentioned oak. In my area, we have primarily oak and I plan to use my sawmill to cut timbers for my shop. The question I have is, you mentioned cutting green, what if the whole logs were cured for a year and then cut. It's difficult to get that many cut and then do all the construction before they cure. So what if we let the curing happen first then cut based on the checking?
White oak in the UK gets so hard after 500 years you need a masonry drill bit to hang a picture, he didn't mention Larch, doesn't the US have Larch?
It seems that you don’t know the log cabins problems !!!!!!!
Lived on a ranch in Wyoming. Main lodge was hybrid and outbuildings for ranch hands were pure log. This gentleman described it perfectly. If I were to do it again I’d go hybrid.
Your delivery bas
After buying a 2 1/2 acre lot , I saw a log house and thought these are AWESOME . While researching log companies and different kits and sizes . I also talked to people that owned log houses and they told me about the issues you mentioned . I eventually picked a conventional "stick construction " house but when I watch the series YELLOWSTONE , I usually say , now that house IS AWESOME ! The more we are informed , the better decisions we make 👍. You gave 100% true facts .
Just buy an old cabin 😂 and fix it up… One time then done 🎉
Such unique perspective. I appreciate this thank you!
So many things identified in this video have been at the back of my mind over the years, this brings that front and center. Thanks for the clarity!
The log package salesman didn't tell me that the finished product was going to cost 3X the cost of the log package..was lucky to find this out before I got too deep into this project..still ended up with a huge loss.
Who would’ve thought houses/cabins have other components / things you need to buy for them 😂
Oregonian here! My Dad was a logger and I am a carpenter…. I knew you were going to put Doug Fir near the Top! I will say spruce and Hemlock are great for interior finish work
