UKGE 2024 Highlights: Economic Board Games
You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work!
Acquire is a top tier game. Big boss was hugely underwhelming to me and my partner, and shark was…also good. But for me, Acquire wins easily.
I've played Big Boss and Acquire during the same session. While Acquire is a masterpiece, Big Boss felt like an AWFUL, HORRIBLE knock-off of Acquire with 0,1% depth of the original. I've played it using the new Funko rules and the game was SO BAD, I can't even express how abysmal the experience of playing it was. I wanted it to be over, but it went on and on and on. The two dimensional board that restricts organic mergers (if you own an "in-between" card you know that these two companies will NEVER merge if you don't want them to), the stalling market, tons of dead cards in hand, the broken "strategy" of just adding blocks to a $50 company with easily accesible level cards (am I missing something?), the ridiculous end-game condition of playing until the last block from the supply is placed (which takes FOREVER - seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a game reach such a boring, degenerate, unfun state). Maybe the original rules (they are included in the rulebook) would solve SOME of these issues (like no easy access to level cards and the fact that they actually have some restrictions printed on them), but I'm not playing this game ever again to find out.
Thanks for sharing, lots of insightful information there on gameplay for players, I've had some similar experiences as well like this
Hi and thanks for the video. A question: at the end of the game are the values of the companies those in the pink boxes for all of them or does thei position on the track always count? Thank you
Excellent game and criminally overlooked.
SHARK !!!
I have to agree with you- Shark > Acquire > Big Boss, but I don’t mind owning all 3 so that I can vary things up. Another similar game is Reiner Knizia’s Rheinlander, which I would put above Acquire, actually. It’s basically Knizia’s take on Acquire, but with a generic Fiefdom theme on top.
Thanks for the suggestion
Great video!
Really suprised how much I enjoyed playing this game, have to play it again soon!
Didn't know this was an economic Game, i'll give it a try, btw i just got crossing oceans by a súper low Prince!!! I saw your vid about the Game recently, keep it up!!! Cheers
Ye I didn't realize either it was economic until I have it a go. I like crossing oceans, one of my favourite designers Mac gerdts! I need to try the first one tranatlantic. My favs of his are navegador and Imperial 2030. Enjoy!
Such fantastic takes really enjoying your intros and enthusiasm
Thanks 👍
great video, thanks!
Thanks for this video, always wanted this game but dont have anybody else interested in these types of games. Not worth it for exclusively mautoma use? Anything else that feels like it snd would be a better pick for a solo gamer?
It's not worth getting just for solo. I would say solo in this one is a good way to try out strategies prepping for a multilayer game. In terms of solo games similar, there's nothing else quiet like fcm. My top 10 solo economic games video and top 10 business games vid may give you inspiration. Crisis solo and Ground floor 2nd edition solo may scratch a similar itch.
Thanks mate, appreciate the reply. That's a shame, but I will definitely check out those vids for other game ideas!
We've had this game for a while. Played several times at 2 and it's good fun. I'm sure it would be better at 3 or 4. It's very interesting but a lot simpler to learn and teach compared with other heavier economic games like Big Shoulders, Agra or Carnegie.
Ye it's overlooked I feel with it's look, and the whole property theme. But actually a neat game. I tried solo, 2 and 3 player count and all work well. Cape May is another nice property game as well.
awesome video as always man!! cheers!! i preordered city of the big shoulders already, and im excited for a new KS called 18royalgorge, it looks a beautiful game!!, wich games do you recommend me in order to get easier mechanics like stockholding and market especulation? i would apreciate it, it is in order to learn in an easy way those games
Hey, thanks man much appreciated. City of the big shoulders what a great choice, I love that game. And I had a look at 18royalgorge which looks intriguing with its western theme. The investment in precious metals as a side hustle sounds fascinating! I did a video on stock games if you type in top 10 stock market games on my channel. I think Shark, Acquire, Power grid with the stock companies expansion are some great starting points.
@@economicboardgames excelent!! Thank You so much, the only Game i currently have with stockholding is mini express, and i'm thinking of Texas & pacífic as well, thanks!! I Will look out tour vídeo!! This is one of My fav board Game channels since it specializes on economic board games, keep it up!!
No worries at all, you guys are why I do this channel, always a pleasure showcasing the best economic games out there and chatting with you all. I haven't tried texas and Pacific but you can't go wrong with the Winsome games collection, they are pretty clever games with lots to like. I'm enjoying Iberian Railways and Gulf mobile and ohio at the moment. Let us know how you get on. 👍
@@economicboardgames it is a really cool. Cube train Game, theres cattel that gives You benefits tho, and has stock holding too :)
Looks fun. Have you played Solo and if yes, how was it?
Ye solo was surprisingly good, played it about 3 times. Bit of upkeep for bot but not to bad. Replicated what a human player would most likely do as well. Worth a try
Great game!
I love how this game looks 👍 Thanks for uploading.
Great stuff. Already own Viticulture and picked up Peak Oil Profiteer and Gonza Index based on your recommendation. Looking forward to cracking them open once they arrive. Need to give Austerity a go as well. Thank you for the great content!
Thanks for the walk through!
The designer is Corne Van Moorsel, one of my favorite designers (even if he is an anti-vaxxer). I just recently picked this up, and I really hope my group enjoys it as much as I think I will!
It turns out that I enjoyed this more than some in my gaming group. The game really punishes players for trying to do too much, it really seems to not want to let players gobble up cubes and move them to where they need to go, but rather insists that you play it slow if you want big rewards. There's also a strange rule about how any delivery MUST turn a profit, which is mentioned once, and never again. The winner then seems to be the player who lucks into the best positioning at the start of the game through the random starting vehicle placement setup, rather than the player who perhaps plans best. I'll need more plays to determine my gut feelings about this, but at 5 players, the later turn order really starts to reveal this. Overall, I like the game, but luck and restraint seem like the keys to winning.
I got this after wanting it for ages but nobody to play it with so will have to solo it.
Nice, I prefer the solo to this game. Planet B is another game with a similar vibe that seems to hit the table more with a group.
A nice one craig! Interested in the solo mode. Will check the solo rules asap. When you say it plays good i trust you.
Thanks! I hope you get to give it a go solo, let me know how you get on. Enjoy
Excelent video as usual, i hope you had fun at essen, i want to desing an economic board game, could you give me some advice in order to make it?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. Exciting decision to design a game. I'm always interested to hear what ideas you have, what did you have in mind
@@economicboardgames first of all thanks for your amazing work!! Second: i have the idea of making a Game about ferrys on México city in the 19th century, players Will be taking the role of tycoons that have a ferry company, the mechanic would be pick up and deliver, market, worker placement and route building, i have to make some historical research, and i love it
Your very welcome. Nice concept, I do love a good nautical game. Navegador, Panamax and Container being some of my favs. Hoping to get Amalfi Renaissance to the table soon as well. It would be great to have a game with some historical aspects related to Mexico, not many out there. Looking forward to hearing more!
@@economicboardgames thank You so much!! I'm doing some research already!! Yet i have to play many nautical games, crossing oceans is on My sight :p
Love the theme here Craig. I like how cover economic games with an environmental focus, or social-educational games in general Keep going this route! Also love Karl Marx book up there. As for the game, i do feel it is on the lighter side but t his is no negative. We need more of these.
Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. Currently reading Capitalism in the 20th century, fascinating read and i intend to read the original workings of Capital soon as well, first book at least.
The Caravanserai board game is now available at Milan Spiele. Give it a try! :)
It looks like very amusing Thank you for meeting this game to us.
Your welcome, enjoy!
80% of these games are rated very poorly now.
Nucleum #1? Rough year.
Great list. Cannot find all of them on the Essen Spiel app though.
Thanks, hopefully they'll all be present and available to test out!
Playte has a preorder form for pick up that is just about to close
Thanks for giving Farland a shoutout! We'd love to have you try it out at Essen. Be sure to check out our other games like Qubik at SPIEL ESSEN booth 4B110!
Great recommendtions Craig!!! I like the look of Algea and i am tempted by World order. Keep making them videos!!
Much appreciated, thanks. Two cracking titles u've chosen!
I'm Farland designer, Thanks for interesting.❤
Hey, gud to hear from you! Good luck with it's release, great looking game!
Great video again Craig. Got to play Metropolis at the weekend, very tidy game, simple with a great design and production value. Thankyou for bringing some games to my attention - Tongo Bongo and World Order are tickling my intrigue sensors. Have you been tempted to visit Essen or will you be sticking with the rapidly price-increasing UKGE?
Thanks Jason, gud to hear from you. I've managed 3 plays of metropolis since recording this... super game. Like you say, simple with great design. Haha, just doing my dutiful service trying to get you to buy more games! UKGE is always a great time for me and visiting Essen is an experience in itself I look forward to one day. Getting all the games back that's the tricky part!
Perfect!! Just in time as I have a discount on that game. I know that it has a solo mode with only a minor issue IMO: the cards are to be read really slowly to understand what the "bot" is doing. Nice video!! (a solo playthrough would be puuuuuurfect too!!)
Good timing! Ye we tried the bot in the 2 player count and its pretty straightforward, just getting the arrows/direction right for them and it works nicely.
An excellent video, some really interesting titles!
Thanks dude, wicked year for economic games!
Look out for a game called "Smoky Valley". Not a stock market game but might be up your alley.
It will absolutely be up my alley. I've had my eye on it for a year or so, just need to get around to playing my friends copy. The industry art style on the front drew me in! Thanks for suggesting
Nice picks! :) Wondering why Imperial Steam didnt made the cut. Other than that, lovely picks!
Thanks. It's still on my shelf of shame staring at me every day. I'm sure I'll love it!
