They need the nice packaging so customers will pay more for something that has the look and feel of a top-of-the-line tool.

Personally I agree with your point of view. However, marketing research probably indicates that nice "expensive" looking packaging improves the products image, helping the buyer to justify the higher price. In other words, the fancy packaging allows them to charge more for the wrench and position it as a Snap-On competitor.

Simple, if you’re looking to avoid packaging like HF icon, just don’t buy it, simply fix.

Some people do give a crap about the packaging. The ones who care about packaging are people who aren't necessarily mechanics, but are just normal people who want something that looks good, and for them it's about presentation. I agree, it should just have a barcode and like a hook to put up on the shelf. First thing I did was pitch the box and rag; I bought it for the usage, not the packaging... plus the lifetime warranty. Mine came dry, had to lube it straight outta the box, felt terrible. Feels much better now, and it's one of my favorite ratchets, especially for the price.

You buy an icon for the no questions asked warranty. The snap on guy wants to call corporate six times and check your prostate before granting a replacement. I had a snap on truck guy at my old job avoid me for two weeks just to not change the blade on a screwdriver.

Cleaning/cloth wipe? That is an added touch. I grew up learning that at end of day, all tooles were wiped down, oiled if needed, and accounted for and put back in box, no matter if project is completed or not. So that "useless" cloth serevs a purpose many learned during their formative years at the trades.

VIM Tools makes a small dual drive ratchet that you can use those sockets in. It’s an 11mm double box end wrench. One end is a ratcheting locking flex head and the other end is fixed non ratcheting but it accepts those PowerTorque low profile nano sockets and that’s a great tool you should look into getting. Model # FRW11

One of my favorite things that icon does is make very decent packages that you can also use to organize the tool in your tool box and you dont have everything bouncing around. I love thise packages. Snapon will sell you a display like that for 5000$ and when it breaks you will have to chase a truck around like a lot lizard

Marketing tactic, mechanics go for the performance and could care less about the packaging, however, every day DIYer see's nicer packaging and instantly associates it with quality. Presentation is everything in sales/retail.
