Roaring Coachman
Loosely based on the Western Coachman when we ran out of both golden pheasant tippets and duck quills. This fly was a staple on the Roaring Fork near Carbondale during the summer caddis hatches, and I'm convinced the silky wing closes the deal when this fly is fished actively ascending in the water column.

If you lose all your flyboxes, this pattern should be among the first you tie to start rebuilding. It can be tied sleek or fat, smooth or raggedy, and in sizes from 10 down to 18. It gets eaten as a caddis nymph, or a golden stone, or a callibaetis mayfly nymph, and even as a scud! Perfect for those of us who struggle to tie a dozen identical flies - variety is desirable!

Here's a small-hook adaptation of the Chubby Chernobyl, for hooks size 10 and smaller. The smaller you tie this pattern the more it encroaches on your selection of beetles and ants, but there's something buggy about legs and big wings that draw fish from the depths. The larger hook gap and the heavier wire will help the fly land and ride upright, and when you have a fly with buoyancy you might ...

    Hey Marty, my leg material curls in different directions so my bug looks uneven. What should I do?

    • @martysbench8552
      @martysbench8552 27 днів тому

      Fish it anyway! Unfortunately not all packages of legs are straight. Hareline's Life Flex and MFC Sexi-Legs are pretty dependable, but I've had some Wapsi that were pretty curly. It's against my nature to throw materials away, but I'll take strands of leg material and trim away all but the straightest sections. Boatmen still rock!

      Callibaetis can be at any depth. The more bugs on the surface the shallower my retrieve, and especially if there are any rising fish. The rest of the time I fish it above and around weedbeds, and I look for the places I can just make out the bottom, commonly 6-10 feet.

    love this pattern in very small sizes on tailwaters when the fish are on emergers. If there is a midge hatch the key is a thin body so be careful to use as little beaver for the body as you can

    When I tie these I will move my thread up to the eye ,bring my yarn up to the eye and since it down.Now once it is tied off I push the yarn back to the dubbing which creates a bubble over the dubbing. This is how LaFontaine does it and it works every time.Have you been digging for worms?

    • @martysbench8552
      @martysbench8552 2 роки тому

      Hi, Dan. Thanks for asking - I edited the UA-cam to include the materials list which I neglected to add at the start. I used to find the chenille at Sportsmen's Warehouse, long time since I've checked. It's Orange and Light Olive variegated, and I haven't seen that combination in Wapsi or Hareline catalogs. There are probably other color combinations that work well, but this one has lots of karma for me (and a growing list of devoted converts who have success with it)

    Great fly for trout and bass in lakes. I've found when wrapping the hackle near the head give it 2 or 3 wraps like a spider fly. This helps it run true whilst trolling to help it run true. Or cut the under hackle to the same effect. You tye a great version and if I had only one fly to fish I would be happy with that one. But there is a better fly that I came up with that catches the 10lb. class in my local stocker lake.
