TCK AMA (ask me anything) with TCK Coach Jen Mohindra!
Back in October, we co-hosted a TCK AMA (ask me anything) event with TCK coach Jen Mohindra where we answered some of the pressing questions our third culture kid community had about all things Third Culture Kids related such as:
- how to carve a career that let's scratch our "TCK itch" to travel and go on adventures
- educating our parents who aren't third culture kids understand our experiences as tcks,
- will we feel at home somewhere? - how to find where's home,
- not feeling a sense of belonging,
- dealing with rootlessness and restlessness,
- dating - can third culture kids have relationships with non-tcks?
- how to keep up with friends and how to cope with friendship loss,
- and many more!
Who is Jen Mohindra?
Jen is a TCK coach and a TCK herself who is passionate about helping adult TCKs find their place in the world. She is the host of the podcast "People Like Us" where she interviews adult TCKs about their experiences growing up globally. To connect with Jen, check out her links below!

I've been living in London for more than 4 years now. I think I want to stay here a while longer to keep my base, but I always feel like travelling. I guess a part of me has gotten so used to different cultures that "different" to me is what normal is now. It feels like I live two separate lives. One outside my base, and one inside my base. Someone asked me where I wanted to stay 'forever' once...

This is for those who have friends scattered all over the world. It can be difficult to let go of friendships, people and places. Many people may perceive you as spoiled from having experienced so many things, but the number of times you have had to let go may have been overlooked... or not understood by others. This is to remind you that if you are going through another big change in your life...
PROJECT HOMEY Day 5 | Final transformation
Переглядів 1195 років тому
I started Project Homey as a way to make my current city, London, feel more like...home. 🏠 Before this project, London didn’t fully feel like home although I had lived here already for a couple of years. It frustrated me soooo much that London felt “unhomey” to me because I knew wanted to live in London for a few more years. One HUGE realization I’ve come upon during this project is that we TCK...

I've only found your Ted x talk today and I love your videos! I've been aware of most of the struggles in this video but I've never realized I've been hesitant to tell my TCK experience to others because I'm scared it might come off as bragging. So this helped me learn new things about myself. Thank you for doing what you're doing :)

Wowow Alessandra, thanks for telling your story ✊🏽 I really liked how you expressed your feelings towards "Goodbye". As we navigate this shrinking world, everything is eternal and all is close. Jay, really enjoy the series, thanks for producing it. 🙏

Haha Jay love the video! Very entertaining and of course relatable for all of us 😄 I love your style and definitely all "rings home"! In time, I feel we all learn how to cope with these, and as with everything those initial training wheels are sensitive. It's fun, by being ourselves, it's more promoting others to consider their view of the world and people, and changing attitudes should be more enjoyable than it is (or was) frustrating. Adapt when you want to lie low, but open up when you want to influence. But wonderful fun video 😄 Thanks for sharing! 🙏🤝🤲 💙🤍💚

I found you last year from a friend who is a TCK, and discovered I was one too! I was born in Argentina, moved to Monterrey, Mexico when I was 4, to Mexico City when I was 10, to Malaysia when 17, to Australia when 24, and this year moved to USA! In so glad Ive found this community because it does feel like you are alone and no one understands you! I dont feel like I have a home and honestly I think like I’ll never be able to call a country home because I’ll always be open to leave, though I cant wait to settle somewhere 😂 thank you for what you do and starting this much needed community!

The 3rd culture mindset is way different than those who are traditional. We see things in a more clear light and we are more real and honest then most people as well.

Everyone has their own story, but for me “what is home”? I’m a 34 year old mom now and my home is my family. I reaaaaaally struggled with the “home” concept after years of shaming myself for being a TCK, by trying to be “American”. (My logic was America is known as the melting pot so it must be my cultural identity. [wrong]). It took having a baby but I finally found mine. 😌

I really appreciate you making this video. As a TCK, it’s easy to feel like a freak for not having a traditional “home” concept like most people. I relate to everything you said in this video. Thanks for being vulnerable on UA-cam for people like me. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🖖🏼🙂

The jealousy people have is unreal. It’s not just about being perceived as spoiled. I think a big element is how our experiences incite envy. Such a great post!

I've definitely experienced the mixed emotions about home too. I considered Central Asia my home when I was younger, even for years after I moved to the UK. Then, when I went back to CA, I realized I didn't fit quite the way I did before and that made things quite confusing. Now I think of home as being more a sense that I carry within myself, a bit like a snail carrying a shell on their back :)

I related to almost everything, but I am not a TCK. I am fluent in three of my languages to the extent that native speakers are surprised to learn those languages are not my first language. I don't know if this has happens to you. When I am thinking in a language other than English, I sometimes expect people to speak to me in the language I am thinking in. I once failed to understand a white lady, who spoke to me in English, because I was thinking in Spanish. Also my dreams tend to either include people, who have never met, speaking to each other in languages they do not know. I struggle to answer the question, "Where is home?" When I am not in America, I just say I am from the USA. When I am in America, I usually say I am from my current city even if I have not been there for a full year. I also get the urge to travel and move. No matter where I am there are always people I miss.

The video just kept getting more and more relatable with each point!! Number #9 was just so true. A few months ago, I did a full round trip of all my friends scattered all over the British Isles, then started getting grumpy as a flew back thousands of miles to Malaysia. Then I move from one side of Malaysia to the opposite side next month, leaving everyone behind here! And I just finised a week in Singapore last week, and didn't have enough time to see all my friends there. Thanks so much for doing this vid! Was really awesome, keep it up. :) I also have a problem that I never sort out my change, so each time I dig around in my coins at the shops, I have half a dozen different currencies to figure out. 😂

      @tckglobal 6 років тому

Hahaha yeah I know what you mean! I have the same issue with my coin purse LOL it has become hopeless when I bring it to other countries with me. Sometimes I accidentally pay one currency in another country and the cashier looks at me like....
