Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy Review - TheUtterChrisp

Hello there! Cor, it's been a while hasn't it?
Welcome back to the channel and to the first video of 2024! Today we're looking at Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy for the PlayStation 2. This is one of my all-time favourites and the second video game that I ever played.
Intro: 00:00
Conflict of Interest: 03:50
Jumping Jak: 10:54
Brave Old World: 17:32
The Bottom Line: 23:13
I just want to give a quick thank you to user @LuminarLight for very kindly allowing me the use of their video footage in The Bottom Line, as well as offering any assistance to my enquiries. Please do go and check out the full video in the above link, as well as the rest of the channel.
Additionally, the synthwave background I use was masterfully created by Salih_Taymasov and can be found on PixaBay.
Yep, I'm fully aware that my fun little intro sequence turned Jak's hair ginger and nope, I most certainly do not want to change it. Ginger Jak is objectively hilarious.

    I remember one side quest that was a very long wild goose chase across the entire map. it was satisfying finally finishing it. I hope they remake this game somehow. Your last point resonates with me. I played this game a lot as a kid yet I never finished it. I built my city, completed most of the side quests, explored the map, but I never beat the grand prix. As a kid I was content doing what I enjoyed most without letting an objective influence my decisions. Nowadays I probably would just treat the game more like a checkbox experience.

      Yeah there's a few globetrotting side quests in Road Trip (item swapping, coins, gems) and they're awesome and a great excuse to go exploring! For sure, as much as my appreciation for the game has only grown over time, these days I pretty much can't help but remain almost entirely objective focused.

    Thank you for making this video. I was able to get my hands on another copy of this game about a month ago, after having lost most everything I had in a housefire in 2010 in my preteens. I managed to 100% this game in a bit over 24 hours, as a tribute to being the first game I ever bothered to play through 100% of the way all those years ago, even restarting my play though to get the only timed stamp in the game back then. I can very much share your sentiment and thoughts for this wonderful game of nostalgia and lost childhood. It was a joy to play through again and be able to experience this once more, as I did over 14 years ago. I hope as time passes that more people get to experience what a unique and strange game Road Trip Adventure really is.

      No worries at all, and I'm so sorry to hear about the housefire! There's definitely something to be said for trying to reconnect with your childhood memories and hobbies and that's certainly something I've been exploring more of late. Couldn't agree more regarding Road Trip's legacy. It deserves far more than it ever got and I'll certainly be trying to push it out there more and more in future!

You're spot on about the music, I also listen to it often. To be honest, whilst I was making this video I was aware of the TikTok controversy regarding the source of the music and it's potential plagiarism, so I chose to skip over it to avoid spreading any potential misinformation. Thankfully I believe it has since been solved amiably!

Youre review of it is amazing and spot on encapsulates how it feels to play through as an adult and complete it so quick, where as a kid i never finished any of the Choro Q games. Still always keep my eye out for something more modern to scratch the itch of a CaRPG like this one. I absolutely loved this game as a kid, and Penny Racers as well. I also loved Gadget racers, which seemed like a bit of a mix between Penny Racers and Road Trip, where its open world wasn't "fully open world" as Road Trips and you definitely did more racing, but still had a similar charm. It's also like it was mixed with ideas from games like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter in the sense of new areas were locked off by big doors until you got enough of the item that was pictured on the door, along with it showing you how many you needed.

    • @TheUtterChrisp
      @TheUtterChrisp 3 місяці тому

      You're spot on about Gadget Racers, the world design definitely feels reminiscent of Crash Team Racing and that's the exact point I'm going to make when I get around to making the video! To borrow a comparison from another series, it sort of feels like how Dragon Quest 8 had that wide open world and then 11 went for the more enclosed zones. Differing design philosophies but they both work.

      Honestly there just isn't anything like a good old fashioned LAN party, and Unreal Tournament was one of the absolute best series' to hold one with! @@TheUtterChrisp yeah... i mean i sort of gave up on new games really. gaming is just in such a shitty state where the majority of people want garbage and companies are all ran by suit wearer who have no clue about games either. a suitwearer only thinks money so his brain literally works like this: millions of people watch soccer=soccer good. less people watch snooker or chess so that has to mean snooker and chess sucks and nobody is interested in it even tho those sports dont even have anything to do with each other at all. it honestly just makes me mad. because as long as those companies get run by suit wearer it pretty much mean that more niche games or games that make less money will never be made again at all. all you can hope for is that the community will keep those games alive and does something with it. i think its something devs dont understand. i dont need or want ultra realistic graphics and i dont need or want a new game every year. i can play a game for like 20 years, if there are editors and alike so the community can push out their own content all the time. its just sad. i honestly hope that the entire gaming industry collapses and devs need to go back small and think of why and what type of games made them big and great in the first place.

      I think you've definitely gotta be rather selective these days but I've had some good fortune finding newer experiences I like. They tend to be either indie or from a lot of Japanese studios though! Video games are an art-form over a money printing press as far as I'm concerned and you've just got to look for the developers and publishers who see it that way too. I'd rather play a creative 7/10 than a cookie cutter 10/10.

I know I'll love HG3 because of just how similar it is to HG2 in a lot of ways, though I miss the full open world and My City! HG4 just seems totally wild, like a full on RPG, even moreso than Road Trip, so I'm excited to sink my teeth into that properly. It takes me a bit longer to make videos these days (full time job + wanting to go way more in-depth than I used to), but rest assured I'll get to them eventually!

      I struggled with HG3 for the same reason with it not being fully open world. But like you mentioned in your vid sometimes changing perspective can transform your outlook on a game - I asked myself if I'd still love Road Trip even if it had gates between the cities and I decided yes I would. Since then I enjoy HG3 a lot more!! HG4 is wild, I actually really like it after leaving it and coming back to it a few times Look forward to seeing your vids on them in the future 👍👍

      Hello there! They're two songs from Zane Little's excellent "New Peach Radio" album, you can find it on his UA-cam channel :). Off the top of my head I believe they are called "Midnight Cruiser" and "Empty Stretch".

    This game was one of my childhood racers when I was really young, it just has this whimsical charm that infatuates the youthful mind, and even after I had long forgotten the name of Gadget Racers, the memories of it remained very strong. Over a decade later, I've finally got a copy of Gadget Racers on order, ready to do it all over again.

    I have had this game for 18 years… EIGHTEEN YEARS… and I am STILL on my first playthrough. I’m not playing it every day, but I have consistently played it quite regularly for that entire time span. It was probably the second-most played game of my childhood, behind only Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, and it’s still probably my second most often-played PS2 game (still, behind Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy) and yet I still have plenty of stuff to do every time I go back to it, and I’ve still never actually finished the Grand Prix and become president lol

      Damn that's amazing! You've truly savoured the experience and turned it into the Road Trip of a lifetime. I tend to be the same with Dragon Quest XI. Granted I have finished the game like five times but I've nearly always got an ongoing playthrough going on in the background. Always nice to have a comfort game!

    Awesome video love the phenomenal production and editing styles too! Ironically I just picked this game up on PS2 after years of playing Jak 2 and 3. Never sat and played through the original even tho I had it on PS3 part of the HD trilogy. Here’s to hoping Naughty dog revisits this franchise.

    Loved your Vid on RT: adventure. I also just noticed during your explanation of the region games that Seek and Destroy popped up, loved that one too, I also got that one from a random shop that had a few ps2 games on a DVD spin basket. Seek and Destroy vid when?

    • @TheUtterChrisp
      @TheUtterChrisp 5 місяців тому

      Thank you very much, for watching this and that one! Very well spotted, Seek and Destroy is wild. It's a very bizarre concept to take these wholesome games and stick them into a conflict-focused scenario! Needless to say, I'll definitely be covering it eventually, once I've done Gadget Racers (HG3) and ChoroQ (HG4). I'm just wrapping up the season 2 finale atm (hard at work on the Yakuza 0 video!), but for season 3 I'll be focusing a lot more on following up on the various video game series I've already started :).
