Was just hanging on the Minoa Walk Over, not the busiest of days, and in the early part my camera view was blocked by a "building" Intermodal prairie doggin" under the cross walk, FINALLY it left, and just as I was about to give up the radio picks up that defect detector at mp280.... and this came thru :)

This was meant for the other channel, afleetcommand ( BTW that is the name of a now deceased race horse. I got him and gave his broken frame a few years of pasture time. Almost like we had something in common ) BUT I choose to leave it up as this is a big part of what "funds" the outboards and trains. Logging. Kind of a interesting twist. Kind of a strange for some mix.....until u see that the ONE thing in common is "Gear Head" or "Clutch Head" interest. Trains are an engineering marvel. Saws? They generate fun bucks & heat the house. AND they scratch that tinkers itch to work on stuff. Boats to, but u can have a saw on a work bench, instant gratification when they run and can help produce firewood for heat, timber sales for taxes.

    Ugly boat!.. but a wonderful outboard - it's a classic... However, please bear in mind - that if you are not 100% professional - do not fool around with the gas/carb adjustments; which also includes the ignition regulation... it is not for an amateur; - seen a lot of so-called experts... who actually ruined such a wonder-outboard; - since they did not have any idea how to adjust the above mentioned... take care!

    Let me know if you want to sell it the 5500... I have one like it but the one motor axle gear cracked. Yes, mine was a plastic gear. I bought it as is. I bought a better motor assembly for mine, but have not figured out how to set up that weird middle wheel speed sensing switch. That was the one with the broken gear. Soon, a get to it, project for me. You missed the best part of this engine, the diesel horns...

    Never get tired of 027 Alco’s running around the tracks. The blue & black B & M are my favorite. Just like the paint design. Yes that’s the way “ABBA” . Mine are all powered 2, 2, 1, 2 motors total 7. Pulls anything I put behind them.

    Big difference between throw away engines and one’s made to last. Hard to beat the 50’s Alco’s for reliability. Unless you seek out something even older. But not an apples to apples comparison since the quality does drop as you go newer and newer.

    The DC motor interface with the truck looks same as post war Lionel AC motor second iteration. The previous AC motors like in 2023 Alco diesel had a pin pivot and single screw also. The iteration with the keyway design is a smaller field motor and two gear reductions. The 2023 style has a bigger motor field and only one stage of gearing. Oddly the older design with less gear pulls stronger and faster speed. The DC can your showing benefits greatly from the two stage gearing.

    There is something about the 027 Alco’s running around the tracks no other engine has. Possibly memories of a kid. Lionel small steamers also have that charm with drive linkage churning away. The AC motor ozone and smoke aroma fills the air adding to the feel of Lionel toy trains.

    My thoughts: The can motor in the steam engine in the same spot where a armature of AC powered pull-more is not a improvement, but a cost cutting venture. (Less copper wire, no need for field coil plates, or need to have the winding machines for these coils. Just buy the DC motors from a low cost provider.) That started with the low cost sets like the cannon ball.... Now the larger DC can motor with the fly wheel in the steamers and inside the diesel units were a great improvement. In both cased the train could be run at lower speeds for more scale train experience. Sorry, but I just cringe when you put your nice loco and train items on their side right on the track. That chips the paint, puts other marks on them and just makes them look more used, but they are you trains...

    The motors in the trucks from my early experience, the pivot points of those gears is the problem area. Oil the pivot points on then often, as well as the axles. Then avoid any quick start and stops since they have no flywheel a quick stop puts pressure back to the motor and the gears and the pivot points. Back in around 1986 I partly ruined mine and had to drill out the remaining pivot points on the two smaller gears and put a machine thread screw it there and then gave the set away. otherwise they are pretty good engines. Oh yes, do oil the other end of the motor but keep conductive oil and conductive oil away from these, if it gets into the motor. Your motor will spark and smoke and the electronic reverse unit will blow the power transistors. I fixed one least year.

    • @genemanno1533
      @genemanno1533 Місяць тому

      These are an all plastic cheap design. Once the gear pin breaks off the whole truck is garbage. One would be smart to avoid such cheaply constructed equipment. There are plenty out there to suggest longer life and not so delicate. And yes the electronics is just as cheap junk as the rest of the engine. Strip out everything and they become usable dummy engines. I do not see the effort to repair such cheap stuff to start with worth my time. Better put to a more collectible vintage engine. But then everybody has different agenda.😊

      @@genemanno1533 Recently I have been running the Husky K-line diesel engines. they have these same motor in the truck design, but those Husky engine only have one motor. Weird thing is the other truck is even geared but without the motor. I have run several of these pretty hard but wisely and they are still just fine. But yes they have to be oiled and quick stops avoided... Ironically these have what look like the strobe light on the cab top but there is no light in there However they do have directional lights as well, but their little normal two motor brothers, S-2 don't have directional lights ...

  • @genemanno1533
    @genemanno1533 Місяць тому

    Actually horizontal mounted motor allow for all spur gear drives which is more efficient. They did it very cheaply and used all plastic…… not good for any longevity. Metal would be my choice for trucks and frame with brass gearing. Delrin (PTFE as a premium) gears would be a step up from nylon but it was done cheap, cheap. We play with these toys as toys which don’t justify more costly materials. Just my observation the mix of 027 and scale passenger of differing type cars don’t look right. Honestly your $5 car looks best. The 1666 is a great little early engine, my favorite steamer. Yes, agree 027 cars a lot better behind the 1666E. Note the sand casting dome detail on 1666E that is lacking on the 224

      Like the A B A Alco units with string of coal cars. I just put together Boston & Maine blue/black A B B A all powered Alco’s with two motors in each piece except one B unit only has 1 motor. I like the power train to be more realistic with all engine trucks functional just like the 1:1 real life trains. The can motors are more cost effective for manufacturers profit margin. The 50’s & 60’s Alco’s in 200 series were a lot of engine for very little money. The early one’s more so than the newer ones when cost downs out shined quality. The 200 series where far short of the quality of 2000 series but for a lot less money the enjoyment is on par.

    Toy trains are fun to play with. You have acquired a number of engines. Both “O” and 027 mix quite well. True scale is quite a bit larger and some look out of place because they are so big. Shorter “O” & 027 equipment looks better going around this layout. Interesting facts of the marine applications for the obsolete engines.😊😊 You refer to “O” & 027 as 1/58 scale. I’ve seen others refer to them as 1/52 scale. I imagine there are both depending on the trains size. Some “O’s” being bigger than 027 but still smaller than scale. I imagine die casting tooling is good for way more cycles than toy trains can demand.
