Seawater Intake
The pump draws seawater through a sea chest located on the ship's hull. Filters or strainers are used at the intake point to prevent debris, marine life, and other contaminants from entering the system, ensuring smooth pump operation and protecting downstream components.
Circulation Through Heat Exchangers
The pump circulates the seawater to heat exchangers or coolers, where it absorbs heat from various systems:
Main Engine Cooling: Seawater removes heat from the jacket water, which cools the engine cylinders and pistons.
Lubricating Oil Cooling: The heat absorbed by lubricating oil during engine operation is transferred to the seawater.
Auxiliary Systems Cooling: Seawater also helps cool auxiliary machinery like air compressors and generators.
Discharge Overboard
After absorbing heat, the seawater is discharged back into the ocean. The system is designed to ensure that the discharged water meets environmental regulations, avoiding significant thermal pollution.
