Приєднався 12 лис 2023
Join me in my 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Syncro as I start my Van Life journey. I will be upgrading my Vanagon with new and improved parts making it more capable of surviving the harsh Alaska weather and roads and taking you along each step of the way. The adventures will include, daily life in the Vanagon, cooking, camping, winter driving, winter camping, fishing, fat biking, hiking, skiing, snow shoeing, gold prospecting, and whatever else I can think of. Be sure to follow along and drop a comment on what you'd like to see. Steve
First Week of Alaska Van Life
This first week taught me that winter Van Life in the Vanagon here in Alaska is as much about adapting as it is about learning. The challenges are real, but they will make the victories even sweeter! This is what my first week of my Winter Alaska Van Life looked like. I had a lot of learning moments, I'm already finding things that don't work, some that do, and how Alaska weather doesn't care what you have going on in life. Stick around and enjoy watching me learn things the hard way!

In this video I share the beginning of my Van Life journey in my 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Syncro in the middle of Winter in Alaska. I'm going to test myself, my Vanagon and my equipment to see if I can survive Alaska's brutal Winter conditions and make full time Van Life here a reality. Along the way I will show what works and the things that don't work. I've lived in Alaska over 25 ye...

In the future are you going to get bigger tires?
My summer tires are a couple sizes bigger these are my winter tires right now. Diesel swapping and I will upsize when I have the power to turn bigger tires.
That makes sense, good deal.👍🏽
@pinkmist5978 factory engine is way under powered for big tires for sure, I already down shift at most hills 🤪
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures You thinking a 1.9 TDI? In my opinion that’s the way to go. Good fuel economy and torque.
Such an awesome van!
Thanks!! it’s getting there 😎
I just subscribed. Between my teardrop camper and my tow vehicle I'm 85k all in. Now I wish I would have bought a van like yours, that van is awesome.
Glad you subscribed! Thanks for the compliment on the van I love it!
It can be some leaking of air on a fuel line. Also very easy to make full service on it, just a mesh filter and glow plug change. Take care!
I will be tearing it down when I get a chance to take a look at it I’ve got it in my garage just installed a new one so it’ll be a spare.
Thought you guys where getting alot of snow and -20 weather !?
Not down south of Anchorage up north has gotten some though. Been rain and snow mix today hoping it cools off and just snows again
What's up Steve!!
Hopefully the temperature in my VW now that I installed a new heater 😉
Invest in a genuine Webasto gas heater and tap into your main fuel line.
It’s on the wishlist and will be a priority before next winter for sure 👍🏻
We have an Eberspacher in our T5 here in the U.K. while we don’t get your negative temperatures (currently -4*C here) it’s still not pleasurable to camp without heating, the Eberspacher is now two years old and has been faultless, no smoke,no failed starts, no shut downs etc, it just works, I set it at 16*c at night and it cuts in and out as required. Fair play to you for sticking it out when you could stay in your house 👍🏻. Stay safe 🇬🇧
Thankfully my new heater was delivered today and is now warming the van now so I’m not going to be cold 🥶 now. I’m going to be diesel swapping this fall and will for sure be fuel line tapping to run off the vans tank. Definitely something to be said about quality heaters it just wasn’t in my budget when I bought the heater last winter. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures Good to hear you got the new heater. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures.
@Archivalindex thanks, looking forward to more adventures now myself. Thanks for commenting
Sorry to hear you lost so much video! What a bummer! Glad you persisted and still got a video out! Hope you get you heater installed soon.
Thanks good learning lesson on the mic for sure. Heater still hasn’t arrived got an email yesterday said it was delayed in Anchorage of all places 🤪.
That’s about how much snow we get in southern England (if any) 😢
I’m sure soon we will get some actual snow like we had back in November. I’m just hoping it doesn’t overachieve to make up for lost time and we end up with a late spring because of it. Thanks for watching
Nice bold head
High speed low drag haircut 😎
Like you said in the video. It’s the size of the van I like as well. Can park about anywhere a car can. Safe travels
One thing I love about it for sure plus I can camp wherever I shut the key off and no one will know I’m inside 😎. Thanks for watching
Love the T3 Syncro it’s the ultimate transporter we have a 2WD T5 here in the U.K. subbed in the first 2 mins lol 👍🏻🇬🇧
Thanks for subscribing! Yes I love mine and all its challenges of being 30+ years old but I’m a die hard VW guy and love the experiences I get from it both good and bad 😎. Lots of cool adventures ahead so enjoy
Make sure to stick around to the end of the video to see the Northern Lights pictures I took on my first morning of Alaska van life in my Vanagon! Thanks for watching
Greetings from Montréal, good luck
Welcome to the channel, thank you for the well wishes I appreciate it. Thanks for watching and I hope you are staying warm as well.
So cool! Go hawks ☺️
Go Hawks! 12 for life
Absolutely perfect van. Perfect year. Perfect color. Amazing! Please please please tell me how much you got it for!
Over $55k for the one owner Syncro but I’ve also got over $35k in parts and accessories either on it or waiting to go on in the spring.
Love it! Just sold my old Econoline sportsmobile and got a transit, but nothing will be as cool as a vw syncro. Keep it alive! See ya on the road.
I looked at sprinters for a little bit but Volkswagen is in my blood so I opted to go for it and got a Syncro so I can drive it year around up here. Hope to see you on the road or up here! Thanks for commenting
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures For sure! Look forward to the videos! 🤙
@nickadler6001 🤘🏻😎
How much do you sell them for?
Really just depends on the bed and how long it takes me to build them, finish used, whether it’s custom, etc…
15:43 Is that a fab rats reference? 😂
Fab Rats is one of my favorite UA-cam channels so definitely love that saying!
@ haha, glad I picked up on it! They are a bunch of good people for sure.
@VWJawbreaker I’m going to have to stop in there and see them sometime for sure been watching them since they helped rescue the Golden Nugget been a huge fan since
Oh I’m looking forward to the next video already.
I’m working on it now 😎. Thanks for watching
That’s a sweet van my friend
Thank you, it’s a work in progress but slowly getting there
If you’re ever passing through Arkansas you should camp out in the ouachita mountains and the ozark mountains both places are beautiful specially during the fall season
@jayrob280 sounds great to me! Hoping to TDI swap the Syncro this fall so that’s definitely in the realm of possibility
Automatic transmission liquid in the locks will stop them from freezing
I just happen to have some so I will pull the door handles off and take them down and clean them give that a try. It’s been raining and above freezing during the days here so when we stay below freezing again I will be locked out again 🤪. Thanks for the advice and for watching I appreciate it
@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures when I use to wash my van in super cold weather I use to put a big blob of Vaseline in the dock lock. That would prevent water accumulation in locks
I put painters tape over mine last week when I washed it at the car wash but the road spray right now is going to cause problems when we dip below freezing again. I wonder how the Vaseline does in negative temps??
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures i tried many times and it works great. It also lubricates the lock . You have a nice vanagonn. Enjoy living in it
@aucoinroland9072 have to give it a try then definitely better than being locked out all the time 🤪. Thanks the Vanagon is a work in progress with tons of upgrades in the next several months
i'm starting this new trip with you! good luck, waiting on your content
Thanks for starting the adventure with me I appreciate you joining the channel.
Someone new and fresh. Love it.
Welcome aboard the adventures 😎. Thanks for watching
I can’t wait to buy a syncro in the future😊 thank you for the great video.
I know I love my Syncro and will hopefully have it ready before next winter 🥶 for some serious travels to some amazing places both here in Alaska, Canada and the rest of the lower 48. Best advice is to get the Syncro you can find and go from there you won’t be disappointed. Thanks for watching
I thought this was gonna be about the ID buzz ..... funny, I just came back from hiking a S. FL trail and met a couple from Alaska...58 deg., which is cool for us 🙂
I was stationed in Mayport in the early 90’s and remember 60 degrees feeling cold lol. I don’t think the ID buzz would like the cold up here much. Alaskans like to snow bird in the lower 48 to escape the cold 🥶 for sure
Brrrr! Get your flip flops and head South of the Border. Doubled up curtains will help keep the heat in too. Stay warm.
Above freezing here currently feels like flip flop weather, maybe next winter I will head south seems like more snow down there than up here right now. Thanks for watching 😎
Excited that you're kicking off your #vanlife adventure! Starting in January in Alaska is hardcore - hopefully you'll get that heater sorted soon. Can't wait to see more!
Thank you! It's definitely been a rough start but if it were easy everyone would be doing it lol. Heater is cooked but my new one is almost here and I'm looking forward to not waking up with ice in my beard in the mornings :). Thanks for the great advice the other day as well!
Another great video. Thank You
Thanks for watching I appreciate it
I remember when there was more a chance of hell freezing over than rain in January,, where I grew up it would usually be -30 to -40 C in January, February,, not so much now, this kind of weather is hard on infrastructure.
We get these odd winters occasionally up here and they tend to make a mess of everything when they happen, I prefer it stay cold all winter so we don’t get the icy roads. I’m hoping for some snow sometime I want to go snow camping.
Are you the guy that did the video of the guy who was screwing with the wild moose?😂
No that’s wasn’t me
clean your injection system check pump
Think when I get home tomorrow I will pull it out again and take a look at everything. Sounds like it’s the fan motor or possibly the bearing behind the shaft makes a little noise but when it’s ran 10-15 minutes it just stops the fan and shuts off the power. Not sure but I do know it’s not real warm in here at the moment 🥶. Thanks for the suggestion I will definitely look into it and let you know what I find out. Thanks
I did a thorough tear down and cleaning still doing the same thing think my fan motor gets hot and is seizing up possibly because it just stops cold turkey.
Right on dude! Best of luck.
Thanks it’s already been an adventure and it’s only day 2 lol. Thanks for watching
Happy new year 🎉
Happy New Year!
It looks sunny still, & not a lot of snow. The Vanagon never get finished, & always working on. My gear lever broke a couple of weeks just came off in my hand at an intersection. Just ordered up a Van Cafe Big Shot Shifter, & all new bushings as I also had trouble getting it into gears.
Definitely a weird winter up here this year but I’m sure at some point in the not to far future it’ll snow and make up for lost time lol. After reading some forums a few months back about how easy the shifters can snap off for no reason I’ve been taking it easier on mine when it doesn’t want to shift when the trans is cold 🥶. You’ll have to let me know on the shifter I’ve looked at it a few times just hasn’t been in the budget yet, probably a spring project at this point for me. Hope it goes smoothly for you.
Nice cheap job . The poor car needs a good clean lol
I know I’m afraid if I wash it the doors will start freezing shut again or knowing my luck it’d rain again lol. Thanks for watching!
Where is this at?
Soldotna, Alaska
Very cool hobby! Would you consider a second UA-cam channel focused on your furniture? That could be really enjoyable to watch.
Thank you 😊. I’ve thought about it but I’m still learning the UA-cam thing, learning cameras, editing and everything else. Definitely wish I had your editing skills love the videos you put out and that you are local to me
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures I appreciate that! Happy to meet and chat about UA-cam stuff, or van stuff, or whatever any time. It always helps to have people to bounce ideas off of!
That would be awesome especially since you are 10 minutes away from me. I’m usually around most days and would love to meet up anytime you would like
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures great! I'll send you an email
I IG messaged you
Merry Christmas to You and Your Family!
Thank you and I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas as well.
What engine is in your rig? Long road trip for a 2.1L
I have the factory 2.1L but on the drive down this time I was driving the friend I was helping move truck and a Uhaul trailer. I did drive it up from Washington when I bought it
@ Right on, my 2.1 runs quite well and is low mileage, but I’m not sure I trust it on long hauls.
Mines pretty low mileage as well I’m hoping to do a TDI swap in the fall of 2025 if everything works out like I am planning so I won’t have to worry on road trips.
makes me wonder what kind of grease works in Alaska compared to the rest of the lower 49... like wheel bearing grease/ engine oils/ gear oils etc and yea door locks :)
Winter in Alaska definitely tests different things and teaches you many lessons on what not to do :)
Blow dryer🤔
That may work 👍🏻
Looks amazing, glad you went exotic on the spindle arrangement!! 👍
Same here it definitely made the bed harder to build but the end results were worth the abuse
Can never get into my vanagon in winter months…sometimes WD40 helps
I cleaned the locks and put dry lube in them this summer but we just had a rainy couple weeks so it below freezing again hopefully it stays cold now freeze thaw is a mess
Just blow hot air use your mouth
I had some de ice spray so I got in
Looks beautiful
Thank you
Sweet. Perhaps small magnets instead of velcro, velcro tape tend to peal off... or probally me just being cheap buying the budget tape.
I tried magnets but the ones I bought weren’t strong enough to hold the covers in place because of their weight of the covers being doubled up that’s why I went with Velcro. The Velcro works pretty well but if I don’t pull near the attachment points I remove both sides of the Velcro too, definitely not perfect but will get me through this winter until I can either locate better magnets or Velcro that isn’t so grippy
Enjoyed it, thanks. I also have a Syncro Westfalie and I'm getting rid of the LPG system and installing a diesel heater. Thinking a 2kw maybe a better fit as I thnk the 5kw maybe to powerfull, I usally dont camp out in freezing temps. Also I am worried about filling diesel inside the cabin, I will likely spill at some point and worried that it may smell. Is it a problem for you?
2kw probably be ok in a warmer climate but I’d ask someone in a warmer area to be sure. My 5kw sips fuel and power I only fuel up after 5-7 nights with it on. I’m prepared with a couple rags to prevent me from spilling when I fill up, hasn’t been a problem. Fill the tank slower so you don’t turn the diesel to foam and it won’t overflow in my experience. Stay warm and enjoy your Syncro Westy
Hey man do you live in the Soldotna area? I’m up in Kenai. Great video!
I do I’ve lived in Soldotna for 25 years, I’d love to get together sometime and chat
@ right on. This weather is crazy! The rain has been crazy! We need it to get colder, lol! We need to meet up and go camping!
@AllOverOverland yes it is I’m over the rainy 40 degree weather and all the icy treacherous side streets! I’m definitely down for camping pretty much anytime
Put a washer on it
Got them today I will install them tomorrow 👍🏻
Had the same issue this summer. Someone in the fb group recommended the bent ‘wavy washers’. No issue since, but haven’t had it in ice.
I will have to get a pair of them tomorrow and put them on I have flat washers on now. Thanks for the comment I appreciate the recommendation!!
I hope they hold up for ice.
@MaxKayaks that’s why I replaced the factory arms last fall was the heavy snow stripped them out I have been careful with them this time, but will be adding the curved washers tomorrow and let you know how they do
@MaxKayaks I subscribed to your channel as well 👍🏻
@ Lots of overly long kayak videos…. But will be doing more van vids too.
This takes me back thirty years to when I was a carpenter in central Colorado, living in a Vanagon (with studded tires). I learned to stop thinking about the ditches and just be on the road.
Yes for sure. The studs are nice but you still have to stay on the roads like you said. You lived in an almost new Vanagon 👍🏻👍🏻
@@AlaskaVolkswagenAdventures It was ten years old and nearly perfect, and I paid $900 for it. I don't like to think about what I paid for the Westy I live in now.
@tedfoureagles2778 I wish I paid $900 for my Westy! I get light headed every time I think about how much I’ve got into mine but I’d do it again without much hesitation too
