SCV 1989 - DCI Finals Week Mike French harness tape
This is Mike French's harness tape recording that captured the walk-on and run through on the day of DCI finals in 1989. The harness noise, duts, breathing, relative audio position of brass and pit, I think even some flag PVC noise, and other nuances put the listener right inside the '89 snareline. It's a low tech version the go-pro style videos we're seeing now-a-days-which are also amazing, of course.
Anyways, enjoy this recording that I laid over some 1989 snare line pictures thanks to the miracle of Google image search. Credit to the image takers and owners!

Lots of amazing ballads in DCI 2024. One of my favs was Boston's "True Colors" because of the full brass ensemble movement. Too many stand out moments in the color guard to keep track of. The following night the color guard would win the caption.

I love how the 80's writing still left "room" for the entirety of the overall musical presentation to be heard. Not every section playing every possible rhythm every single second...
If they find this you being hella sued bro.
cooked like bacon, man ;-)
This show changed my perception of what it meant to be “musical” as a percussion section. Thank you!
I'll never forget seeing the huge difference in SCV's output between their first show of the season where they scored 56.1 (June 12th) and the next time I saw them at Long Beach, CA in mid July. This first show in June was tough to watch. But when I next saw them at Long Beach, they had improved so much. At Long Beach, their score was up to 79.9 and the improvement in their output was writ large. SCV deserves a LOT of credit for how much they grew over the 1993 season.
Love this Drumline!! Will always be one of my top 5 lines of all time
STILL one of the top 5 SCV beautiful “Closers”. And it feels like the music itself, was saying farewell to Gail Royer. Beautiful, Sad, Mysterious and delivered with the utmost respect. 🫡 ❤
Also interesting to note how they closed the show by using the gate maneuver that they opened the 1992 (Royer's last year as director) with. This time, on the opposite end of the field and at the end (exit) of the show instead of the beginning (entrance).
Drum solo and closer are the balls 🥜
Ralph’s musical writing has never been matched. So supportive and expressive and loaded with so much nuanced demand. Truly perfection. This book doesn’t seem to get enough attention, imo.
I used to use the ending of the opener as my alarm clock in college! Please help me with the quads... Murray Gusek, Mike Opadca, Collin McNutt, and I never met the other guys. You five (especially 91 and 92) inspired me to march 3 years in Scouts (94 - 96), then. North Texas (2000 - 2003). I owe you all so much for the rich life I've led because of all of your influence from your hard work and elite talent... you all showed me how to play quads.
Scouts 1995 is one my favorite shows of all time, what a drumline! Wish the sheets were out there somewhere
Don’t forget about Matt Altmire!
I miss those old unis so bad. They looked like gods.
Corps gotta come back first
Maybe this year they will put the hats back on at least
@@erroneous3493 Let's hope. But if they continue to feel the need to do acrobatics all over the field, I don't see the hats staying on for long.
Awesome show. Did come a long way from the start to finish!
@11:26 “Saucesome”
I almost marched Vanguard this year, but couldn't afford it. Plus I wasn't very good lol
Same. I was there for a while in 1993. But I had only started playing music in 1991. So I still had a LONG way to go with learning. In late March of 1993, I left the A corps because I felt I just wasn't ready yet. A year later, I was definitely ready. But, ironically, I never went back. One of my biggest regrets. At the end of my high school bands 1993 season (November of 93) one of my high school band instructors urged me to go back to SCV. He felt I was definitely ready. But, I never did.
Spectrum judge has not mentioned one thing about the drumming, lack of rudiments, even the execution. He's all psyched up on the sounds they making, rather than their drumming techniques and overall execution. They are playing very simple parts, with very very few rudiments. Old-school drumlines with judge tan their difficulty number of rudiments that playing and how well they are executing those rudiments together, not Buzz rolls hand-to-hand tops and rim shots. This is just my opinion. December 14th 2022
Sevierville...man that field sucks. You literally can't see the person on the opposite sideline. Also, I've slept in the Sevierville HS gym (Dolly Parton's alma mater) which was shaped like a big boob.
I remember in '97 or so, some audio (of course) clips of this line started popping up on the 'Net. The writing is so cool! 1993 is one of my favorite shows. Seems like a really difficult show design.
Very good! the only down side for me is that I wish the drums could sound the way they did in the 70s.
I like this show so much more than 91.
Yup! I wouldn't want that part.
And nice job, Nick! This has always been impressive.
@@SDdrummingTV - and the drill too... ohh gaaawwwddd the drill!!!! Reset to the top of the intro. My own personal helicopter (91) or Waterfront (97) pods! Let's just say it's good to look back on it now!
Hi... Fine, thanks
Karl Lowe and Rob Jett taught here.
Ummm who taught the colorguard .they are so clean.
I can't even listen to this all the way through. This judge sucks. I heard at least 15 things to comment on in the first :45. "Good" "Beautiful" "So nice" are not helpful critiques when you are trying to get better as a line OR MORE IMPORTANTLY, need the judge to point out things that you have been saying all week(s) on tour. My buddy Wayne Viar got a nice shout out for his timpani playing.
I remember seeing this show live that year in Houston and just being floored by how much these dudes were just flat-out booking it for much of the show. That was some really tough drill, not that this is anything new for Vanguard; their drills often seemed more difficult than most drumcorps.
Yep, the tympanic roll was off.
"Whatever, that configuration is?!?!" Your a percussion judge dont you know.
hey, ya know - the line is on the move, the beats are fast, you're moving out of the way of horn players, the guard is character and method acting flirting with you... the attention span turns to mush at that point right?
I thought the same thing, and I’m a brass girl.
Pete was definitely thrown off by the guard girl flirting with him.. messed him up for the whole show. :)
@@Tendura1993 "Got me a little rattled." We've all been there, brother.
Old heads with some hands! Love it!
8:37 The air raid/bombing sequence into this vocal deserves an award.
Haha! Well spotted (heard). Donkey Kong duts.
The best!!
They got one. It's called High Drums.
@@sellsconsulting indeed. Mostly due to the clean binaries on the compounds, over there on the timp toms.
Flams. ScoJo puts that stuff on everything! It's like hot sauce....only better.
Is this THE Walter Powell who marched SCV in the early '90s? If so, ScoJo shared with me at NAMM a few years ago the story behind coming up with the helicopter and working on sequencing the timing, what's the story behind the Accelarando ending and how long to clean it?
Ummm... was it my flams?
@@jeffe_77 Yep. Many many reps.
@@walterpowelldrums to me, the best battery ending of all time in DCI.
@@jeffe_77 No question!!!! I even like that small choppy snare break. I wish someone would transcribe it who actually knows what they did.
Been in search of this tape since 1996
And here we are 21 years later... success! Hope that it was a fun listen!
@@njs93 absolutely!!!
He enjoyed that as much as I did.
I mean, it’s cool he was so excited. But it’s concerning a DCI judge was so inarticulate and failed to intelligently comment on so many aspects of performance and design. It’s an unhelpful judge’s tape. But it’s so cool to hear this amazing battery and pit up close. Thanks for posting.
I am with you, I love hearing this tape! but he missed a lot of things and was hyping a little too much! especially in a few yucky spots. But again not taking anything away from this great line.
Well was it the final tape? If it's the Final tape there's not really too much to say that can help with future performances since it is the FINAL. Although, I am commenting before I finished it all so I might get more annoyed as I go. Ha!
OK, just saw it was mid-season. 😉 Keep in mind I'm slow to read things.
I haven’t heard this since we sat down as a line to listen to it the day after the show. Thanks for the memories man.
I love Ralph Hardimon’s writing, especially at SCV.
Xmas came early
"Triplet figures...or whatever that configuration is" LOL
My brother! I remember drumming with you on your porch in SLO like it was yesterday. Would love to hang with you again!
Yo Ken!!! Yeah, buddy. How you been! Drummin on the porch in SLO. Amazing times. Sadly, we were doing that before some of these licks were even performed. Ha!
This is one of the most underrated drumcorps shows and drumlines ever. I saw the corps practice live in Houston and they were crazy good given their circumstances that year. One of my favorite all time drumlines.
Do you still have the music to this
Loved this show. May not have been among their higher scoring shows but it was beautifully put together and in the classic Santa Clara style. Wonderful musical book and the ending using Henry Vth is just so majestic. @8:30 to enjoy the final push.
For the record, I just love the hit at 1:07.
this was really good! 1:06 oh youuuu
lol, thanks for watching and the post!
Thanks, Ripter!
I was there. It was hot.
Do you happen to have the finals video?
Do the 2 shmucks need to be running around with the drum line during a run through. Just wondering what they accomplished doing that. Annoying
Hi Kevin, I suppose watching instructors on the field could appear annoying with out some context. At the time, 25 years ago in Jackson, MS, it was the last week of a long season and the heat and conditions were grueling. The staff joined us on the field to be a part of what was going on. To be visceral and in the moment along with the line for those last few run-throughs. I feel their purpose, while perhaps initially in the earlier parts of the year, was to get a judge's perspective on the playing accuracy so they could make comments and improvements after the run through, at this point it was all about enjoying the product and hyping up the line... and we needed it in the line and we enjoyed getting that energy back... and there you have it. I'm not sure how much of that goes on in today's drum corps environment, it might be frowned upon. But considering that there are still field judges, I'm doubtful that staff members have stopped running around after the battery to evaluation certain parts for the competitive side of things. Thems my own personal thoughts.
@@njs93 dude when the staff member was raising his hands and hyping the line at the end of the solo, that was energy!
Was at Finals that year, not a lot of people in Jackson for DCI, but I did see this show, loved it, and got to see the epic Star performance.
The quality of sound those snares got with only six in the line and no projectors in amazing... SERIOUSLY underestimated drumline.
Hell yeah, I remember watching this run.
