How Putin's Cronies Stole Finland's Biggest Hockey Team
I guess this is more the story about how it had been stolen...now the team is back in Finnish hands. But the arena still belongs to these oligarchs and this is an evolving story, so may change at any point.

Is it time for Finland to join NATO?
Переглядів 4,2 тис.2 роки тому
This is my most politically-charged video to date. I believe I'm moderately qualified to speak on this subject: I studied international relations for my undergraduate degree, specializing in the Transatlantic relationship, have worked in and around the defense industry in various roles in Washington DC and Brussels, and served in the Finnish military as a conscript due to my status as a dual-ci...

Bit of a rough look, but let's see if I can fix the drone. Good swim though. Also I'm gathering footage for another video in the near future.

Kind of a fun new spot, going to spend the next few days going all around Helsinki to fill out some of the last swimming spots on my list.

Joey was a pretty good actor today, he really sold me that the water was cold.

Maybe Joey's right, maybe it's not cold and I've been faking it this whole time. Only chance to find out is to join me during this last week.

Thanks for coming with me Jossu! Had a fun weekend out in Vantaa with you and Samuli, plus Kuusijärvi puts any swimming spot in Helsinki to shame...

Easily the worst day so far, but it really isn't hard to get in the water anymore. Especially because I have a responsibility given the title of this series.

Now that they're playing in Mestis, Finland's second tier ice hockey league, Jokerit's future is getting brighter.
y u stop making videos?
Great video, excellent synopsis of how Russia taints everyone they deal with. The Finns were invaded by the USSR (basically Russia) and had to fight for their independence. I am floored the Russians got away stealing Jokerit. We Canadians love Finnish hockey....keep the Russians out
Idk how or why I only came across this video now but omg this made me emotional. The whole timelapse from that moment to this even tho we haven't made it to Liiga yet.
In Finlande league they good, but in khl they last 😢
Breaking ice melts faster. Something you can't teach morons . Unfortunately
i dont think finland will ever join nato
Bro you just offended half of Helsinki by calling Jokerit it's biggest team. For those who dont know Helsinki is the battleground for probably the most fiercest sport rivalry in Finland, between HIFK (Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna, Helsingfors) and Jokerit and btw HIFK is the better of the two when it comes to medals. Pre-2014 HIFK has achieved 7 Finnish Championships, 5 Silver Medals and 9 Bronze medals while Jokerit only 6 Finnish Championships, 6 Silvers and 2 Bronze medals. HIFK and Jokerit also played in 3 Winter Classics in 2011, 2012 and 2014 with HIFK winning all 3. The 2014 Winter Classic is particularly important because its the last time HIFK and Jokerit played against one another and before the Winter Classic, game wins between HIFK and Jokerit against each other were 105-105 which is why it was advertised as the game to decide who was the King in Helsinki, HIFK won 2-1 winning the Kingship of Helsinki
In Canada, I heard of Jokerit. HiFK not as much....
Go and cry in USA’s shoulder...😂
As an old school Jokerit fan, who lost all interest after the KHL move I am so happy they are back. In a proper place doing grassroots junior work and playing passionate hockey. They even have the proper colors on their kit again!
Its history... fckdp... but thank god history 😂
More like Jew-do instructor.
"Biggest Hockey team in Finland😂" not even a biggest hockey team in Helsinki
Thanks for the great video, good to hear a foreign perspective and nice to see you agree on basically all the points. There was no real benefit in selling Jokerit to Russia, other than not getting killed and 'appeasing' the Russian bear for a short while. This used to be Finnish foreign policy towards Russia before Russia launched its full scale war against Ukraine. Now almost all official links are cut off between the two countries and only these shady links remain. Removing these ties is now number one priority in Finland, but since especially Eastern Finland used to rely heavily on Russian tourism and import-exports, it's also now a financial back country that needs innovative R&D and foreign investments. If done right, these investments will modernize Finland but if Finns trust the wrong people, it only escalates the economic and social imbalance between West-East, North-South in Finland.
Hearing foreigners pronounce finnish names and words is literally my favorite hobby 💀
Thank you for the truthful analysis 👍
Kiitos hyvästä dokumentista, thanks for the good documentary! Jokerit funding team lost annually over 12,000,000€
Def. not Finland's biggest hockey team.
the khl jokerit went bakrupt so new guys created new jokerit who are playing at mestis (second tier of finnish hockey) from season 23-24 onwards plans to get to liiga at some point. Hartwall arena is still owned by russians but Helsinki might try to take it back by force. Also thing isnt clear with Liiga wiith it expanding to 16 teams next year with kiekko-espoo so there might not be even room for jokerit there
Fantastic stuff
stupid pröpogandä
I'm a Brit living in Pori. I also make videos on Finland in English. Jesse Joensuu plays for Porin Ässät
Have You heard of City of Joensuu ? IT IS in The Easter part of Finland ! Did You notice that Jesse annunced His retirement from Ice hockey on UA-cam ? He started at the age of 15 years - but now will stard doing something else !
I'm a Dundee Stars fan, a Scottish hockey team that play in the UK's EIHL. There was a similar story with the KHL trying to establish a London-based team. Yep, a team on the other side of the continent. Unsure why they would bother doing that considering the London Knights collapsed after just a season. I think it's better if teams stick to their country's respective leagues so that way we can strengthen ourselves domestically and encourage homegrown talent rather than giving into money and greed.
Well the KHL was all about spreading good image about Russia and not growing the sport. The invasion of Crimea in 2014 pretty much stopped the expansion
This deserves way more views. Great video
Currently they are playing the Finnish 2nd League: Mestis. Up until like 2014 or somewhere around that time, the winner of Mestis was promoted to Liiga but not anymore. Jokurit don't even play in their big arena but instead have to settle with their practice arena instead to play games in Mestis, and surprisingly, Jokurit haven't won a single season as of yet. I don't know the situation of trying to bring them back to the Liiga but things are looking grim as they only play in a 1,700-capacity training arena and are losing to 2nd tier teams, unlike Dinamo Riga who left with them and went to the Latvian 1st league and (not sure) has gone to a playoff final.
Funny enough they are also currently playing their first season in Mestis, plus they use HIFK's arena (Helsingin Jäähalli) in over half of their home games. Team is built around their own juniors with some more experienced players. Everything started from 0 after we left from KHL. Liiga will be open again for season 24-25 and the winner of Mestis can qualify for Liiga.
Latvian 1st league is not good as finnish Liiga.
@@lefa4680 I didn't know they were going to reintroduce promotion between Mestis and Liiga, very cool!
Harkimo is good guy tho. But ofc i Dont like How he selled Jokerit
This video quality is way to good to only have 2.6k views
Stadin Kingi
Calling Jokerit the biggest Finnish team is like calling the Maple Leafs the biggest North American team.
It used to be back when it played in the khl
@@dank_obama6938 no it wasnt. Jokerit always had to give so many free tickets to fill the arena even half full
I actually cannot believe this only has 2.2k views. I only noticed halfway througu the video.. the quality is equal to a big channel. I wouldn't be surprised if something like this had 2.2m views. Great work really 👏
I was on several Arctic expedition to Greenland on Finnish icebreakers - 1 on Fennica and 2 on Otso, beautiful vessels, most friendly crew and delicious pea soup every Thursday: )
Finnish icebreakers were also built for landlocked countries such as Kazakhstan. Shallow draft ice breaking supply vessels Arcticaborg and Antarcticaborg operated for more than a decade in the Caspian Sea to support the Kashagan project. Additionally, five icebreakers of the Mangystau class were constructed in Romania but designed in Finland by Aker Arctic
The content was super but the intro was scary
Hard to believe since one of my friends growing up lived in a 300 year old log house... a big one, too. Later Ive realized even those are really really rare.
wow i didnt know this! :D btw your videos seem very well edited, im surprised these dont have more views but youtube is kinda random i quess.
Finnish food is very good, but its often very simple. i think thats where the reputation comes from. unlike in UK where food is more complex and "special" but not good.
Fish and chips is great
The Australian finds it pretty disgusting by the looks of it.
i meet all this ice breakers in botnia and they really break ice.
bro said biggest team
The american: "coldest one yet" The two finns like: "It wasn't even cold"
Lol as a Fin in south Jersey alway thought it was weird that there was such an old Finnish population outside of Philadelphia too. Finns were the outcasts of Sweden, so as a kid it made sense. It wasn’t until I went to school in Finland and it look like my hometown it made sense. Great video. It’s nice seeing those places online.
Finns weren't even considered white until the late 19th century
Are you familiar with a prominent moto cross motor cycle racer named Ular Rassmann, he's not German, because I definitely saw Scandinavian words to report his exploits. I believe he could be Finnish or Estonian, what is your take on this? I researched the name, my grandmother's maiden name actually, and it shows a small group of Rassmanns in Finland and Estonia. The name is primarily German, if you could reply to me on this I would appreciate it, thanks. I'm from New Jersey as well.
Great video! I am a Forest Finn - a descendant of Finns who migrated in the same period as the people you talk about in this video, but settled in Sweden and eastern Norway instead of going to America. Eric Pålsson Mullica, whom you mention, is a cousin (first cousin once removed, to be precise) of my own direct ancestor, Staffan Pålsson Mulikka who settled in Norway near the border with Sweden :) The Forest Finns are legally recognised as a so-called national minority here in Norway, and a lot of us are descendants of the Mulikka family.
Bro when new film dropping? :D
Interesting but back in 1638 what is now Finland was a part of Sweden and had been for hundreds of years, it was taken from Sweden by the Russians in 1809 and didn't become the nation of Finland until after WWI
New Jersey takaisin Suomelle!
Because why not?
You are a great story teller, your voice fits well. You deserve more views.
Have you come across a Finnish band called Sleepy Sleepers and their album cover "Born In The S.A.V.O." (1985)? In the late 80s the core members of the band formed a band called Leningrad Cowboys. Film director Aki Kaurismäki directed their first music video, which resulted in the short film "Rocky VI" (1986). After two further short films, "Thru the Wire" (1987) and "L.A. Woman" (1988), Kaurismäki decided to direct a feature film about them, "Leningrad Cowboys Go America" (1989). Sequel was titled "Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses" (1994). In 1993 the band performed with the Red Army Choir in "Total Balalaika Show" in Helsinki Senate Square. In that same year the band and the Red Amy Choir performed in the MTV Music Awards held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York. In the show they covered Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama ". Why would the Red Army Choir take part in such project? Some have said that after the Soviet Union collapsed, they needed the money. There's also this place called Kafe Moskva in Helsinki created on purpose to be so bad, that no one wants to come there. Just thinking about hard and soft power, how would all that fit into it? Keeping in mind that McDonald's opened in the Soviet Union in 1990. And there's also this Red Penguins case to consider, in which in the early 90s the ice hockey teams Pittsburgh Penguins and the CSKA Moscow formed a joint venture. There's a documentary about it. Another entertaining topic, business and business ethics relating documentary, about the early years of mobile game industry, would be "Riot On Documentary (2002)".
You are a Kven. Proud history, there even was a Kvenland with kings and queens. My brand went north. You lucky bastards went to..Amerika. Nice production, regards from Norway
