Yes YOU CAN BIKE To IKEA In Calgary
Not perfect but very possible for many people, cycling to Calgary's IKEA is possible with car free pathway connections approaching it from 2 directions. We rode the Bow River Pathway from downtown and only had to navigate a very short section of roadway before arriving.

Comparing Winter Cycling Maintenance To Ski Hill Runs
Переглядів 57321 день тому
Winter has a way of showing us how bad cities are are prioritizing the movement of people not in cars. Main roads are scraped bare while people walking and cycling are forced into a gauntlet of challenges including sheer ice, windrows, and unmaintained surfaces. Like most cities, Calgary approaches cycling infrastructure in a piecemeal kind of way: Some kind of pathway here, another kind there,...

2 Elbows And A Lake Bikepacking Kananaskis Alberta E-Bikepacking
Переглядів 4112 місяці тому
The Big Elbow/Little Elbow Loop is a decades old mountain biking classic ride. For mountain bikers, this ride is considered a “big day out” type ride, often being tackled in one day. The entire loop is off-pavement and predominantly on wide 2-track mountain road. The route is best tackled on an MTB or modern bikepacking ATB. It would be possible to use a gravel bike but be aware there are a lot...

the murderous jerk blue car is pretty typical, thats why my middle finger gets a workout.
You have great cycle paths hey! Why don't drivers care??? Jesus, so scary and infuriating !
We do have an amazing pathway system, over 1000kms with about 500kms receiving winter maintenance.
Ug I forgot about how awful the placement of the beg buttons were. The one on the return trip was worse you have to walk several feet onto the grass to get it
Indeed, easy ride to the 2 worst beg buttons :)
I rode it in the other direction in 1985 with my stumpjumper sport!
Thanks for your videos on this bike I live in Portland, Maine and I've been debating a bike like this for a commuting and crossover with some bike trips. I didn't really want to buy something that I'll have to customize a turn compared to the other class one or Class 2 e bikes I was eyeing, but this bike just seems so versatile! Thanks for sharing your experience with it! Are you still commuting on it in winter?
Thank you for the kind comments! I am definitely still riding it, just rolled over 8000kms in 2 years of mostly commuting. I love this bike and we have sold quit a few - with customers reporting back that they adore the bike too. Get one - you won't be disappointed - and I think Surly still has them on sale. Reminds me I should probably do a 'long term impressions' video soon too.
I use a dynamo front hub for lighting. It allows you to never have to remember to take you lights inside with you to charge. They are also very robust.
Very nice. And priced much better than the Ritchey Road Logic. I'm going with SOMA.
I'm a big fan of Ritchey bikes, actually own a few. In this case, the reason why I went with the Soma over the Road Logic was mostly because the 25mm higher stack height on the Soma, which was one of the things I was looking for.
Merino wool tops from Costco are awesome- almost as nice as higher-priced brands but at a small fraction of the price (around ~CAD$25).
I'm really excited to ride my RR+ this winter! I've always loved winter, especially the snowstorms. I just put on some chunky 102mm tires last night for the season and I may add some auger studs, but they are pretty pricey. I did get some pogies and they look a bit silly, but I'd like to keep my fingers. I've had glasses since I was 3, so I've dealt with fogging for a long time. It's tricky, you either want to keep your glasses warm, or direct your exhaled air away from your eyes. I think the latter is a lot easier to accomplish, and I've had some luck wearing my fabric covid mask because it has the wire to keep the seal around the nose. I think some buffs make this problem worse because they scatter your breath or push it upwards, but a balaclava with breathing holes might be an option.
I've switched from glasses to "overnight contacts" (don't know if that's the proper name) a few years ago and haven't touched my glasses since. I really disliked normal contacts, very uncomfortable, but these I wear when I sleep at night and they slightly deform the eye so you can see clear for about 3 days. Wear them every night and you kind of recharge your eyes at night time (but I've also had good luck with them skipping a few nights, after a few days you really notice you see less). They don't work for every prescription I think, but imo it's definitely worth looking into!
Where do you get your buffs? I'd like to try ones of different thickness.
We used to sell various Buff brand neckwarmers. Nothing here now but we will be bringing them back at some point. Your best bet is to hit up a ski/snowboard shop.
Like that you mentioned: "Don't strobe me bro! Keep it solid, especially on the pathways" I couldn't agree more!
Backup layers are important, both if it is properly cold (so minor problems might stop you) or so you can stop and enjoy winter. Exactly like XC skiing - carry something light and warm to pop on when you stop. For goggles - we are thinking about goggle inserts rather than OTG goggles.
Thanks for the shout out! KimJim
your video-making and content ideas are very excellent. Thank you.❤❤❤
Cheers
how fast is this route in summer and whats it like
In summer conditions this route takes me about 40min. Winter conditions like this adds maybe 5-10min.
You made it through the snirt!
Great video! I love the sound of tires crunching over snow and ice. How do those Ice Spiker Pro's handle the snirt/brown sugar?? Are there any tires out there that can handle in it? I find that stuff to be my commuting nemesis.
Slower speed and lower PSI are key. The Spikers are awesome on challenging snow ice for sure. Not sure there is any magic product that can defeat snirt though, if it is deep and soft, you're doomed :)
hoo wee you are twice as fast on that trail than I am during the summer, all that would've taken me 45min probably. I'm still intimidated by the snow/ice so seeing you zoom on it is giving me motivation to try it slowly. also the asmr style rides are a nice thing to wind down with before I go to bed
Thanks for watching! Winter cycling can be intimidating for sure. My advice starts with investing in good studded tires because they offer a lot of confidence on slippy/icy/ruts surfaces. Lower your seat height a bit if that helps you feel safer. If you find you're getting out more in winter, invest in good quality full coverage fenders so you and your bike stay clean. And always remember - you're outside, in nature, where you belong. Have fun.
Do it! It’s not as scary as it seems once you get used to it. You have to always be cautious, but it’s totally worth it. 🙌🏾
@bikebikerides I got some 650b studded tires from you a couple weeks back and did the first ride with them yesterday on nose creek, no slips although a couple dodgy spots

Nice smooth ride. Which tire size and winter gear are you using in this weather?
Wheels are 27.5 and using 2.6" Schwalbe tires. Re: gear, can you be more specific?
Curious what tires you’re using? I couldn’t find anything good wider than 2” for our skidloader
Most of the Skid Loaders we sell have Schwalbe Ice Spiker 27.5 x 2.6 tires on them. You could also go non-studded winter and use Schwalbe Johnny Watts 365 27.5 x 2.6. I'm using the Ice Spiker up front and the 365 on the rear. www.bikebike.ca/go-shopping/p/schwalbe-ice-spiker-pro-studded-tire
curious about fit. What size frame is it and how tall are you?
It's a 56cm and I am around 170cm
Where’s trailhead ? Thanks
Park at the PLPP visitor centre.
Watching this in front of a fireplace in North Carolina decided not to ride bc it was 31 degrees this morning. I feel really bad. lol I’m a coward.
Close to freezing and rain is THE WORST weather - way worse than colder and snow for sure.
My Winter bike kit tip is for every 10F degrees below 50F add another breathable layer and assume an extra 10F colder when its windy.
Lovely video , thank you
i commute all year from mardaloop to the chinook mall. i use the sidewalks, hoping people have shoveled the day of the snow fall and not after tons of people have walked on it turning the snow into ice. i havent put a studded front tire yet but i think i should since front tire slide outs have led to falls on the road and sidewalks. i would rate my route green all the way in the summer, it changes to blue most of the way and black diamond along macloed trail if there is ice.
I love this rating system! Great for learning about the conditions as a “might ride in winter” viewer and I can also see this as great education for the city to understand what the needs are in the winter for riders!
Thanks as always Sean - more winter biking videos please. Would love to see some winter maintenance and gear tips!
Yep, lots more winter riding content coming!
Love watching this & seeing how you handle this stuff. It'd be fun to do some winter riding examples on other bikes too ( ie. If you ever wanted to borrow our UA once the studs are on it to show what it's like - I'd be game to collab! haha. Let's get more families on bikes! ).
All I want for Christmas is bikes and bike accessories 🎅🏽
Loved this video! As a first timer cycling in the winter, 100% agree that getting out of my neighbourhood is the toughest part of my commute. Packed ice until I hit the river path. I’m so grateful that my work commute connects to the river path. No studded tires as of now, and no falls so far so I’m definitely looking forward to trying out studded tires!
Hows the riding going now that you've got some studded tires installed?
@ tested them out on Saturday during the snow storm so they didn’t really make a difference! 🤣 haven’t had a chance to really test them out just yet, but looking forward to it soon!
Great video! Love the ski hill analogy. Something many Calgarians are able to relate to.
Glad you enjoyed the comparison.
Great job! I'm thinking to buy 3X3 Nine gear box. Please can you shear your experience with 3X3 hub? Is it noisy like Kindernay VII?
So far so good. It is definitely noisier than other IGHs I have used/worked on. Gear range is perfect for me. No complaints at all. Flawless operation on this recent overnighter ua-cam.com/video/GapDwIavUP8/v-deo.html I am very interested to see how it performs through our coming winter.
Hey nice vid!!!I ride the closed section fairly often and it would probably be a good idea to bring bear spray I usually see 1 bear a year on avg.Cheers!!!
Indeed. Being bear aware is mentioned in the show notes.
Gorge indeed! 😍
the autumn colors changing is so pretty, what a great view of the milky way you look like you got too, I appreciate your audio/video on these
The covered wagon was really cool, not something you'd expect
ALWAYS the highlight of my ride on 1A!
Oh man, I wish I had known this was happening, I definitely would've gone. Did you finish the loop or go back the way you came?

Yum 😋 eat back those calories! 🍿
Well done. Looks it was fun 🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴
Nicely done!
Great video. Thanks for highlighting some good Calgary infrastructure. I'm going to give this a ride.
They don't even have that yellow color available on their website??? Hmmm. Thanks for the video. It's very very expensive. You can get two of their 40L bags for $175 dollors or one of these for $240. That's crazy. Insane actually
Thanks for watching!
@@bikebikerides where did you get a yellow one?? I just think the bag overall isn't a well thought out commuter bag. I think they could have added a water bottle net somewhere and a place for U-Lock. I mean they are bike specific bags. So those two things should have been a no brainer. Cause where you going to carry the water bottle when you convert the pannier bag to a backpack on a hike or something??
@@iancharless The Vario is far and away the best backpack pannier out there. 1) it's the most durable 2) It's the most waterproof--it's built as well or better than my 10 year old Back Rollers 3) It's very comfortable as a backpack. A water bottle holder would be a terrible idea--it just wouldn't hold up to a decade of daily use like the rest of the bag will.
Also the high visibility option one
Dude this was awesome and made me want to do it! Thanks.
Dude! Do it! Let us know how it goes. Are you thinking 2 days or 3 or?
Congratulations brother. Huge accomplishment with the ride and sobriety 🎉.
Thx! Feeling so good in body and mind. Never going back to the drink.
I've done sections of The Greenway route this year. I disliked that major roadways like McKnight 17th Avenue and pagan trail forced me to make massive detours inorder to stay on a bike path
No question improvements are needed and there are still dead zones, especially in the SE.
