This show was magical. Rather than let an extremely sad episode end on a melancholy note, the superlative writing changes everything. Turning on a dime, a gloriously upbeat, rollicking and FUN ending makes the episode pure gold.
There are so many gems from this show. I think that scene is my favorite from the show. Chuckles the Clowns funeral is a close 2nd.
Perfect ensemble work at its best. Television has sunk so low nowadays that vids like this are a total delight.
Anyone know ted knight was in film Psycho?
He was the Nazi officer …
Best show ever! They don’t make sitcoms like this anymore.
Just saw him perform aboard the Celebrity Eclipse, was my favorite musician by far! Keep up the awesome work my dude!! 👍
Ted Knight is the best there is. He can turn a mild joke into comic gold. As an American actor/ screenwriter, I bow to him and his remarkable talent. Hollywood could take a lesson from him..
You have to hand it to Mary Tyler Moore for being so unselfish, in letting Knight show his extraordinary talent..
The cast was first-rate all the way!🪅🪅🪅🪅
The audience didn't seem to get it.
This is what I miss about comedy shows.
Good one
One of the greatest sitcoms in our lives a true American
Lou & Murray stonefaced response perfect.
Whenever I hear Anna Maria Alberghetti's name -- which I do about once a year -- I think of Ted's "knock-knock" joke.
I don’t get it.
It was a joke for its time. Anna Maria Alberghetti was a woman in a played-too-much commercial back in those days. She always mentioned in the ad that her name was Anna Maria Alberghetti. She was advertising some sort of Italian food. So viewers back then remembered the long Italian name and thought it was funny. She became the butt of everyday jokes thanks to her funny, silly, always aired name. Combine that with an old popular song (I think from the 40s) and it ends up being a good knock, knock joke because it’s a mixture of the old and the contemporary - or at least contemporary to people watching that episode when it first aired. It was like a Weird Al parody song before Weird Al came along.
1. Alberghetti (sp?) was an Italian singer from the 50s-60s. But the only reason people still remember her name today is that she hawked spaghetti sauce in the 70s. 2. After you Google her, then Google “Darktown Strutters Ball.” Then you’ll get the joke. 😁 (I stumbled across this clip last night, and today I’m obsessing on countless renditions of “Darktown Strutters Ball” … ) 😆🤣😂😅
Loved the show. Mary and Bob Newhart on Saturday nights made it less painful for me to be dateless, LOL.
Perfect 👌
Not only do most people not know who anna maria alberghetti was,the don't know what a knock knock joke is, they never heard the song dark town strutters ball. But this scene is still funny.
I remember that joke and how I laughed myself silly. It makes me chuckle after all these years.
I was just eleven years old when I saw this, and I still remember it to this day!
Same here!
I love how Ted is the hero in this scene. He makes his depressed friends feel better. This might be the only time. They should have wrote him this way at least a little more.
Her best performance was in the 1955 film the last command, with sterling hayden Better Alamo movie than any of its successors
That scene is so touching
One of the most memorable lines from the show. Well done. The Mary Tyler Moore show is an absolute gem. One of the best sitcoms ever.
It is the one element Seinfeld lacked--humanity.
It’s as if every. Last. Character on his show was ultimately selfish.
I forgot how funny this show was. Ted Knight and Betty White we're brilliant.
So charming. Just perfect. Wow. I tip my hat to all.
💟💟💟💟💟
Mary Tyler Moore was so pretty!
Until the facelifts. 😢
The Love Boat😂Mary with her Farrah Fawcett's hair is hilarious 😮
I just loved this the first time and will always.
One of my favorite all time sitcoms. Sad to think that the whole cast is gone. Fond memories of that show.
One of my favorite older TV shows . I wish it was still on TV. They were all great actors .
On a hunch I just checked, and it seems that Anna Maria Alberghetti is still around. (She turned 88 in May.)
Ted Baxter delivered the punch line perfectly in tune with the original song "The Darktown Strutter's Ball"
Hey Jonathan it’s me Sasha I love your music
the only reason i knew the name anna maria alberghetti until very recently was because of this joke.
And I thought they used that name because she was in a commercial all the time back then. I didn’t realize she had a whole career before that commercial. 😮
I understand how Ted's knock-knock joke morphed into "The Darktown Strutters' Ball," although it's a stretch that all the cast members knew it. By the 1970s, who would know the lyrics but musicians and singers? Now, that said, please, somebody explain to me how "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" wound up as the cast's farewell to each other, and, without acknowledging it, the audience? I believe the MTM show was, and still is, the best sitcom ever made. Bear with me; I just don't get it.
I don't know why the writers chose it but it was a World War 1 marching song and in a way they are marching together out of the WJM office for the last time. There were always alot of war references especially by the Lou character. Of course on the show the idea came from the head of Ted so maybe we aren't really supposed to totally understand it.
Hi Friend. As a woman who has just turned 68 I can answer this question. My Grandmother who was British was still alive in the early '70s. I grew up hearing this on her old records, and sometimes sung by Mother and other contemporaries of my Grandmother. In those days it was more common to have 3 generations living closer, in same home or nearby and WW1 was remembered by the generations and the songs sung as a remembrance and mark of respect for the sacrifices of those who died during that awful war. The generations of that time are gone now but there are still some descendants, myself being one, who still remember those songs which were sung to bring courage and hope to those left behind. In this way, we have a great blessing in the video remembrances to remind us of our humanity when things seem dire in many places. I hope that you can feel some comfort in what I am sharing here. It is something that I hold close to my heart and try to share as much as possible, before it is my time whenever that is. Thank you for asking this question. Peace and health and blessings to you and everyone
@@LizbethPlenty Thank you, but I'm the same age as you and still have not the slightest clue how this particular song wound up sung on an American sitcom in the mid-1970s, with the assumption that all the characters would know the lyrics, and that many in the home audience would grasp their meaning.
What is the name of the song they're singing?
"Darktown Strutters Ball"
Beautiful!
What fun!
Oh my...look at that cute boy!
We had the best time! Great concert! Number one Frans here!
Im so proud of you man!!!!!!! Thanks to uncle scottie i can watch all your videos u post lol keep up the great work im glad you having fun doing what you love!!!

Hey. I know that guy.
My go to when I need a little cheering up. Works every time. Enjoyed meeting MTM at a hotel bar in NYC years ago. The martinis and the laughs were amazing. Bellied up to the bar out of nowhere. Awesome experience.
That’s fantastic!
One of my favorite episodes. Touching at the wedding.
I can never find anyone to tell this joke to... XD
I hear you, I understand
Michael Moore once wrote Ed Asner for money to make his first movie. Asner sent him a $500 check.
Oh! Thank you for uploading this, so funny, feel good clip!
