ExoticBlanks' Videos are a treasure-trove of information about making pens and other small projects on a wood lathe. Dawn and Ed from Exotics spent fifteen years selling their wares at Art & Craft venues, beginning in 1995. Dawn was among the original "home-brewed" resin casters featuring colors that are still unique. Ed turned all kinds of plastics, when this was referred to as "The Dark Side" of products that came from the wood lathe.

Hi Ed, I purchased a couple of these kits and some IBO blanks from you many years ago. I just retired so I made one of these and it looks amazing! I should’ve watched this video first. I used DNA and then applied some thin CA as it seemed like the blank needed it. I probably should’ve used BLO and some friction polish to finish it, however it looks amazing with a CA finish. I have some Mylar sanding sealer and Mylar friction polish as well as other stuff in my cart on your site. I just keep adding to my order. lol. Thanks for everything you do and I mean everything! I think I have a whole drawer full of your freebie blanks. You’re awesome!
I have been in an Olive wood only turners workshop, and I do understand the smell you are talking about.
Hi Ed: I use the same method, but I drill the blank first before going to the bandsaw - don't have to worry so much about drilling too far. Thanks!
Thanks for publicizing this.
Hi John, Nice job. Defintely will try this. When smoothing the Gluboost on the lathe with the skew and sanding how do you keep from scratching the metal part of the finial. Many of the Jr's are plated.
Carbide pen mills work well for me. However, the problem with pen mills is that you have to have the drill part that match each tube tube diameter. Nice work with that oval skew!
Thank you for showing me with with good ole fashion tools. All these new guys have these new, expensive tools that I don’t want nor have the money for. Appreciate it.
You will have to provide each pen with spare ink cartridges because the cartridge is so small. For that reason I do not make slimline click pens anymore.
I use a drill gauge laid it on my vice which allows the transmission to just fit through this stops the brass tube from coming out. Using your hand to hold it invariably means the tube will come out. In which case I remove it cleans and re-glue it back in. So drill a hole in a piece of wood set it on your vice lay your drill gauge on that get you pin punch and drive the transmission out.
You also have mica pigment paste
Nice lookin blank! What size tube is used for this and does the GluBoost CA have to cure that long??
This inlay kit was made for sierra size pens--OD of tube is .40". GluBoost works with several different application routines. Both Mark Dreyer and John Underhill do NOT wait, they get excellent results. Both have UA-cam vids showing their method,.
The ink cartridge is very small. I will have to find someone who provides these small cartridges to supply to people that buy the pens from me. They are not the standard slimline cartridges.
nice job! 👍 don't u wanna try with the stone ?
Well.. a week or so ago I bought some slimline click pens. Just turned it today, and I must have the OLD instructions downloaded from EB's web site cause my directions are the same as you show here. Now I have the click mech stuck in the TOP of the pen! Trying now to get it out. Reason I'm watching this now!
Looks good, Ed. Those used to be some of my best sellers back when I did a lot of pens.
Good job Ed. I use trans Tint 50/50 with DNA. I also use the Craft Supply Artisan dye which is easier to use and cures more quickly. Both dyes come off a little bit when apply CA, but not enought to make the color any lighter.
Thanks for the input!! We are learning as we experiment--so far very happy with the results! Ed
Great job Ed. I have made quite a few corn-cob Sierra pens. To stabilize the cobs, I soak them in Minwax wood hardener. That works pretty well. I don't have your skew skills, so I use my Easy Tools negative rake carbide cutter. I usually dye them yellow at the end with Alumilite yellow die. That works well with CA finishes. I let the dye dry overnight. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the comment, Mike!!
Good information. So far, I haven't had to remove a transmission but good to know the technique. When I do use the punches and a hammer, I wrap a piece of bike inner tube around the pen body for a good grip.
Thank you for this. It was damn near therapeutic! I assume (by the blunt shape of the nose) that this is a 'Touch Screen Pen" ? My wife says it's called a 'Stylus'. Or am I wrong? Wakodahatchee Chris
Mr Underhill I bought your kit a few months ago and I just got around to using the kit. The first blanks came out looking really good. I am using alumilite. I finally put three molds into the pressure chamber. One came out perfect and the other two came out with hundreds of little bubbles. Would you have any ides why they would all the bubbles. They were under 35 psi for about 2-1/2 hours.
John, do you have a source for snake skin?
Oh I see this was the full video. Thanks.
Actually there are two other vids related to this. I made it to answer a question for a customer, uploaded quickly. Will try to clean it up in the next couple days. Thanks for watching!! Ed
Very cool idea. Thanks.
Great looks John. Leave it to Father Sing to come up with a simple but brilliant upgrade and let the master turner present it to the world.
I use a small round file to smooth off the adges
Hi Ed; Good one! I make 7mm "sleeves" when I use the pen mill. I don't do that often because I use a sanding jig to square up the blank ends. I then chamfer the blank ends with a reloading tool to chamfer the ends of the blank. This relieves stress and make pressing the fittings in easier.
I wondered about using a chamfering tool. Thanks for proving it.
Ed, Mark, and John; I turned a Holly blank for a Slim-Line pen and it was so bland I decided to try to color the wood. I used a Neon Yellow highlighter and planned to coat it with CA. As soon as the CA touched the colored blank the bright yellow turned a Cherry Red color. It turned out awesome. A big surprise. I can't explain why this happened, I'm guessing some chemical reaction.
I thought you were going to cut it the ring in the vise, that you didn't made me think about "why not?" Aside from simplicity, there is the advantage that snap-cracking the ring results in a glue joint that is unlikely to be a STRAIGHT line. Straight lines draw the eye more than irregular lines.
Thanks John. This series is fantastic. Lots of ideas and good advice.
John do you have a video on how to do the carbon fiber tube that’s on this pen?
Thanks for explaining why you used construction paper instead of paint. Great video!
Excellent tutorial! I've made a few custom finials, pretty much the same method. My favorite is with wood blanks, using the matching cutoff so the grain flows over the top of the pen. I look forward to the center band video. Take care!
Thanks, John. Great tip.
Hi John, any reason you used CA instead of UV resin? That final shot OMG is that stunning. Nice work thanks for the ideas.
It’s just a personal preference. I’m better at not leaving small air bubbles in there with the fill and finish Gluboost. I’ve used some UV resins with mixed results. I wouldn’t recommend using just any CA. Many of them get too brittle and crack with time or use. The full and finish Gluboost line is made to be a finish and is flexible so it doesn’t crack.
I bought 3 of those a little while ago. They came out great. I used a negative rake carbide cutter which worked out perfectly.
Great video. I will try some of those on my next order.
What’s the cost of each blank resin, powder, dye?
That is a very difficult question to answer! Alumilite resin comes in 8 ounces to 5 gallon sizes--prices are very different based on the amount you purchase!! Buying 10 gallons is $800.00 or about 50 cents per ounce, (plus freight) 32 ounces is $44 (plus freight) or $1.40 per ounce. A normal square is about 3 ounces, so you can figure out your cost based on the amount you are willing to purchase. Dye and micah are about 25 cents. Then there is waste!!! Even John, who has been casting for over a decade, has some "pours" that don't turn out. Using the vertical casting system will reduce the amount per blank by about 25% Hope this gives you an idea of the answer to your question---Ed
so this is how vibrators are made?
Impressive even if at 2X. I tried to be the first to leave a "thumbs up" wouldn't let me do it.
That is some impressive work with the skew!
Great job. Thanks for showing how to do this.
When you make the jig, the 31/64" hole has to be deeper than the height of the "finial piece" (cap). You may want to drill through if you are using wood, that way you can press it out from the open side, if it gets stuck in the hole. FWIW-Ed
Great idea Ed. Thanks for sharing. Mike
Thank you! Great job on the jig. This is very helpful.
Very nice thank you for sharing. Everyone stay safe, warm, happy 😊 and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
Awesome info. Thank you. I enjoyed MPG a few years back.
Looks more like a Sierra kit to me.
The diamond knurl is made exclusively for Exotic Blanks and it is very similar to the sierra. Tubes are the same size. However, the finial resembles the elegant series, but the back end screws on so it can conveniently be replaced with a stylus version (which is also available). Additionally, the "nib" of the pen unscrews to allow the user to change the refill without exposing the transmission--a notable design improvement over the original. Finally, the "centerband" ornamentation is much deeper carved and the nose is gunmetal, so it is very durable--not likely to scratch and peel. Thanks for watching!! Try a Diamond Knurl Ballpoint, you will see the difference for yourself! Ed
Hi Ed, Is that a real piece of rebar? How in the world did you drill that? Even drilled out, isn't it heavy to write with? I t certainly does look nice.
Yes, it is real rebar. We tried dozens of times to drill pieces and NO, we did not succeed. One of our customers found a job shop that can drill the rebar--we are buying from him. I will weigh the pen, my impression is that it is not too heavy (the remaining steel is pretty thin). It is a cool looking pen!!
Yes it is a cool looking pen. I figured it must be thin if you're suggesting to paint the brass tube. That's just amazing. Rebar. I may actually have to order 1 ea. of these and see how they sell. If nothing else, I'll have some pretty cool looking pens. @@exoticblanks
it weighs 16 grams, a little less than half an ounce
That's impressive. Thank you Dawn.@@dawnkizer982
Good job guys. Nice to see all (TonyL)
Great idea Ed. Is this a kit you sell?
Yes, we sell the ornament kit (ExoticBlanks.com), but I changed the brass tubes to standard Slimline tubes, about twice as long as the ornament kit. I like the look!!
