Also, how do you know when to change the substrate? Any tips on separating the isopods from the substrate when doing this? I've always found this a huge pain because I haven't found an efficient method to separate the pods (especially mancae) from the old substrate to make sure I don't get rid of any living isopods
Thank you for the great vid! I know it depends on species & their breeding rates, but how do you know when you have enough isopods in a colony/bin to be able to sell some of them?
Maybe I should feed them blood pills
Happy Birthday 🥳
Hehe for a while ago
Thank you! :-D
This video was excellent! I found it really handy just to watch each species moving and get a sense of what they were like as a pet. It helped for size comparison and movement comparison and I found it relaxing to watch - I wish you confirmed the name of each typer just cos I’m learning but I think I knew some of them :-) most even! Thanks again! Great video!
I'm glad that you found the video helpful and enjoyable. I will add a video that shows off a wide variety of common types with clear labels and all of that to my list! :-D It's really a great idea and I didn't even think about it.
Are the second ones shown Milk Backs? Laevis? I love how wide and chunky they are - how good they are and how shiny they are 😊
Yes! The second ones are milkbacks. I had to go back and watch the video because I definitely didn't know the answer off the top of my heads. I like the laevis as well and have dairy cows, milkbacks, how now brown cows, caramel, and orange now (though some argue that either the dairy cows or the oranges aren't laevis, but whatever you want to think of them I like them). :-D
Is that the average sized Western? Luv those guys!!!!
This video primarily has adult females as the stars. Those girls are average for adult females, but with western hognoses there is a big size difference between boys and girls. George does get a moment in the sun in this video. He is my albino anaconda male and he is considered an adult now and he's a bit on the small side, but fairly average for a male. Adult females are going to be in the range of 250 grams to 500 grams being fairly common and being in the middle of that being "average". My arctic adult females are 380 grams right now. Every now and again you will hear of a giant female that pushes into the 600 to supposedly 800 gram mark. Adult males are going to be more like 70 to 120 grams with a huge male pushing into that 200 gram mark. It does happen, but isn't common. Now these numbers are very much for the western or plains hognose (same snake two different common names), Heterodon nasicus. Other numbers are going to hold true for other species. For example, the tricolor hognoses don't have as big of a difference between males and females.
We Need An Updated One! 😅😂😮
That does sound like a good idea. So much has happened and is continuing to happen! I have to get back into a better posting schedule too!
What other reptile speices do you guys want to breed snakes lizards etc
We have a lot going on here cause I'm crazy and couldn't pick. We currently have baby crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, corn snakes, western hognoses, and rosy boas. We have 9 ball python eggs that look great. We have a pair of chameleon geckos (E. vieillardi) and a pair of chahoua geckos that are currently paired, but have yet to produce. Next year we will have the species we bred this year, plus a pair of tricolor hognoses and a pair of African house snakes. The following year we will have a California red-sided garter snakes ready to put together. I also have a love of pathogenetic species so we have 3 varieties of mourning geckos, Indo-Pacific tree geckos, and Bynoe's geckos. Recently I bought some micro desert geckos and will eventually have 5 to 10 species of micro desert geckos. :-P It's a bit of a zoo here, but hopefully we will be producing some amazing critters for people in the next few years and loving every minute of it!
@@danellescritters Thats Awesome! Are there any other animals you would want to get into?
Don't you also breed Emerald Tree Skinks and Kenyan Sand Boas?
@@Starwarsressentiance We have a group of emerald tree skinks that I am hoping we can get settled well and breeding for us. I didn't include them since the cover was of one so I sort of thought they were already in people's minds. :-P I don't have any Kenyan sand boas and it isn't a species that we are considering at this time even though they are super cool. I do have a pair of rosy boas though and it was exciting to have her give birth this year. :-D
@@JediOrder17 I am struggling with that question a bit because we are running out of room and I'm trying to be realistic with what we can do here. Part of me would love to live in this home forever, but that does mean either keeping Danelle's Critters fairly limited in size or it means moving Danelle's Critters somewhere while keeping this as our home. Who knows what all we will decide. In the next few years we are likely to have a bunch of dwarf, desert, community type geckos and I will probably get more New Caledonian geckos, but we won't be continuing to add a ton of new species cause there just isn't enough space. :-P
Funny you mention them only wanting to come out between 10 and 2. Mine are exactly the same. Any later and they're totally not interested even though they were begging an hour ago!😂
It really is cool that it is clearly all them. They really do want to interact with us, but it definitely has to be on their terms. If they think I'm trying to grab them they aren't happy, but when they want to come out and they come forward in the way they want to. :-D I'm am looking forward to producing these for others!
@@danellescritters mine were captive bred too so that's interesting they share the same behavior. Had mine since they were a few months old too. No way you can catch them to force them to interact, but it's hard to do anything else in the cage when they want to come out! They beg at the glass like a puppy.
What does 101 means?
So each animal here is given its own unique number so that I can keep track of it. 101 is Vee who actually sold to another breeder awhile back. He is a very pretty gargoyle gecko though presumably he has a different name now. I like to have as much information as I can though I am still improving on my system. If you buy a critter from me it has its own unique number, followed by its birthdate or hatchdate (if I have that information), and then its parents unique numbers (if I have that information). Since most of what I sell is stuff that I produce most of that information is provided. One day I hope to have it set up so that you can go and check out the animal's known lineage. My husband also wants to create an app where people who purchase our critters could register their animals from us and update their photos over time and have a cool place where all that lineage information is. So far we have only been doing this a short while so we are looking at only 1 generation produced by us, but we should be starting our second generation next year with gargoyle and crested geckos and we have corn snakes we produced that should be ready in 2026! :-D
Cute little guy! 😊
He's a little jumpy, but should settle in nicely and I'm really excited about his potential for next year! :-D
I'm getting a hognose at an expo on october 26th! I already have the tank set up, and I'm really excited. There isn't too much hognose snake informational videos on youtube that I haven't watched, so I was so glad to come across this!
Congratulations on your upcoming baby! The hognoses are really awesome! It will take a bit, but I have lots more hognose content to share. :-D
Thank you for the video. I live in China and pythons are not common here (a special license is required). I have some corn snakes and I agree... they really are wonderful
I'm glad. you enjoyed the video. I should have my husband make one that tells people ball pythons are the best pet snake because he likes them better. :-P Needing a permit for one though definitely makes it harder to jump into! I have no idea what your laws are like for local wildlife, but one snake from China that I have admired is the 100 flower rat snake, Elaphe moellendorffi. They are beautiful, though I don't think they are quite as friendly as a corn snake. :-D
I want to have that in my collection your rubber ducky its so expensive here in my country
The rubber duckies are cool. Here in the US they are still pretty pricey compared to other isopods that have been in the hobby a similar length of time. They are slow growers and breeders which has kept the price higher. Panda kings are also really adorable, they are a cubaris species as well and have the little faces, and they breed faster so the price of them has fallen here dramatically. Maybe that would be a good option where you are as well?
@@danellescritters i'm from Philippines great video you have want to meet you someday have a priv talk about other sp. Of isopods
Name Suggestion for hognose arctic girl how about Alaska? 😊
I 2nd that name!
@@MusicRules1 thanks! 😊
That is a great name. We actually have two female arctics and because they look almost exactly the same (one is about 20 grams heavier at this point) we have named them Billie and Bailie. Billie was a naughty mama this year and ate her eggs (I caught her in the act). Bailie did great and produced 13 eggs, but I had some humidity issues during incubation and only 3 hatched. All three are super arctics though and really adorable. Of course, so far only one has eaten. It ended up being named Sid because of something my mother-in-law said, but Alaska would be a cool name if we keep more than just Sid. I will admit that letting them go will be hard cause they are so stinking cute!
Congrats on the beautiful new addition! I hope you'll have a successful season with her/them next year. I love the tricolors, but don't have any. Too bad for their short life span.
I love them a lot. I do wonder if we would have better luck with life span if we didn't insist on feeding them mice. A lot of them die from fatty liver because they really can't adjust to the rodent diet. The western hognoses eat quite a few rodents in the wild, but the tricolors are known to eat amphibians, lizards, and reptile eggs so we are really taxing them with the fat. It's also interesting that they get kind of a bad rep for living a short life, but it's kind of compared to snake species that live a long time. You can expect your tricolor hognose to live 7 to 8 years with good care. This is way longer than many insects and some spiders, most rodents, most chameleons, and is similar to a number of lizards and even large dogs and some rabbit breeds. But anyway....thank you for the well wishes. :-D
Congrats !
Thank you! She's beautiful and we are definitely glad to have her. :-D
May I ask what you would feed an Emerald tree skink in a typical week?
I feed the adult emerald tree skinks roaches, mealworms, crickets, and isopods regularly as well as offering them Pangea. All bugs are dusted with calcium without d3 (because they have uvb lighting) and bee pollen at every feeding and a multivitamin powder (for reptiles) twice a month. I do the bugs three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and then the Pangea gets added at random times throughout the week and left for 24 to 48 hours. Someone in there does eat some of it (probably the male since he is most reclusive) and one male from the quarantine group eats it, but it isn't being eaten a ton. Finally, they get treats occasionally of other feeders their favorite being wax worms. They have tried waxworms, butter worms, silk worms, and hornworms. I also tried black soldier fly larvae but they didn't like them (one even spit it out and they picked through the worm dish and ate everything but the bsfl). The baby we have is eating fruit flies, bean beetles, small crickets, and isopods and is also offered Pangea and I feed her about 5 times a week at this point. Because they are in a group it can be hard to know how much to give. I regularly change that up and watch everyone's body conditioning. If you are seeing anyone's spine then they aren't getting enough food. Mostly they are getting 5 to 7 feeders each at each meal, but sometimes I add in extra to make sure that those who are slower are getting some as well. I also feed in multiple spots in the enclosure. My girls will tong feed and there are 3 bug bowls and 3 different spots Pangea is added. I toss the crickets in there and isopods as well. They dig through the soil to get the isopods and they love hunting down the crickets. I will be doing a care guide in the near(ish) future! :-D
@@danellescritters Thank you very much for such a detailed explanation, exactly what I was hoping for! Will look forward to your video :-D
So helpful! I’m a new crestie mama and I really appreciate your attention to detail!!
I'm glad it was helpful! In case you missed it, I also have a care guide: ua-cam.com/video/ABqxNgtyfYM/v-deo.html and a handling video: ua-cam.com/video/t6QM9vQScbY/v-deo.html. There will be additional crested gecko content coming in the future as well and comparisons of the crested gecko to some of the other New Caledonian geckos in case you are interested in some other cool geckos with the same care. :-D
Where do you buy deli cups/snake bags and what size deli cups would you use for crested geckos and gargoyle geckos?
You can buy them from a large variety of places including reptile shipping companies such as Reptiles2You, ReptilesExpress, or Redline Shipping. Pangeareptile.com also has them under the "shipping supplies" tab. I usually order from Redline Shipping when I am buying boxes too or Pangea when I am ordering gecko food or cork bark. I have used the 4.5" ones for little geckos and have actually moved away from that because it is too easy to catch a tail in there. It is a little better if you do the 8 ounce one which is taller, but to me it is worth the extra money to just get the 6.5" ones for everyone.
Such cute little honeys!!! 🦎
They are so much fun to watch. I have a really awesome plan for the enclosure set up I will be doing for all the desert geckos!
Those are so cute! I like the enclosure set up, too. I always inbox in my car. I’m only 20 min away from the hub, but I can never wait and the FedEx clerk likes to come out and see what I have, sometimes, too. 😂
While we were at FedEx last time someone was opening a live animal box in the car next to us and I almost went over to see what he got. :-P
I have a male western, hes small but smart. Taught him to eat from the top of his hide. Hes a big suck and he likes being handled. He will come to my hand and stay still while i pick him up. They are smart and they can surprise you.
That's awesome! Snakes are definitely smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. The hognoses are a lot of fun. :-D
I love isopods, best of luck with yours and happy belated birthday Danielle! ❤️
Isopods are great. And thank you for the belated birthday wishes!

Do you work with Eastern Indigo Snakes? Or Sarasinorum Geckos?
I don't work with Eastern Indigos though I do think they are amazing. It isn't likely we will ever breed them though. I don't have any sarasinorum geckos yet, but they are on the list for the near future. Hopefully next year we should get some. My goal is to get all of the New Caledonian geckos. Currently we have crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, chahoua geckos, and Vieillardi's chameleon geckos. :-D
I am thinking about getting a Govee Wi-Fi or Bluetooth thermometer for my crested geckos cage. This is my first Crested Gecko so hopefully this isn't a stupid question now if the thermometer is in the cage when you mist it wouldnt that kill the thermometer due to it getting wet form the water/misting
We love the fact that you can check on the Govee on the phone. So far we have had luck by misting around it or by pulling it out before misting. We do want to get some things more automated though and that will include misting systems and I haven't figured out what I will do then. Right now I use a Zoo Med one with probes in the chameleon enclosure where he has a mister and a fogger, but then it doesn't hook up to my phone and I end up staying up late with the excuse that I need to make sure his night time humidity is good. :-P
Do you breed western or Plains hognose snakes? If so do you work with sable het albino ,albino het sable ,yeti or super yeti or leucistic?
I do have some western (or plains if you prefer) hognose snakes. This year is the first year that we produced babies (our second year trying). We got three babies. They are super arctics and super adorable. I don't have a lot of cool things going on yet, but next year we will be pairing our albino anaconda male to a lemon ghost green het albino female and an arctic pos het female in addition to pairing the arctic shadow male to the arctic females. We are hoping for a total of 4 clutches next year. This year one female ate her clutch and I lost a lot of the second clutch due to struggling with proper humidity while they were incubating so we have plans to fix those issues. A third clutch was laid but it was all duds because the timing was off. :-P
Whats your favortie species to breed?
That's a really hard one! Breeding is all about exciting things happening and then a bunch of waiting before more exciting things happen. The colubrid season is almost wrapped up. We are waiting on one clutch of 10 corn snake eggs to hatch and one clutch of 2 Halloween milksnake eggs to hatch. My favorite snake species that we currently work with is corn snakes with the California red sided garter snakes being a close second. The garters won't breed till 2026 though so I don't know if we can count them as a breeding project yet. My favorite geckos to work with are all ones I haven't gotten breeding yet. :-P I really love the chahoua and the Vieillardi's chameleon geckos that we got this year even though neither have produced eggs for us yet. I also am really in love with the dwarf species of desert geckos we have picked up recently (Steudner's dwarf gecko- Tropiocolotes steundneri and dune geckos - Stenodactylus sthenodactylus). They are so much fun to watch, but we haven't had them long enough to get them breeding. Oh! And I can't forget how amazing the emerald tree skinks are even though they also have yet to produce for us. :-D
Nice timing 😂 on catch 👏 👌
It's definitely a lot of practice and it still doesn't always work. :-P
What a fantastic video!! This is tremendous for me and my new girl Pancake. Hopefully your channel gets the growth it deserves!
I'm glad the video was helpful! :-D
Great video! Currently have 2 Cuban tree frogs for myself, but my fiancé is jealous and wants her own cool little critters haha. We've narrowed it down between monkey tailed anoles, Cuban false chameleons or bearded anoles, and emerald tree skinks, I think the emeralds are winning 🤣
I really love the emerald tree skinks, even the male who hasn't warmed up to us yet. It's cool to see him getting a little braver. He will sit out and let me talk to him some now. Cuban false chameleons are on my list too! Most of those are also wild caught, but I had the opportunity to hold some captive bred ones a couple of years ago and they are really cool. I haven't checked out the monkey tailed anoles and probably shouldn't. We are running out of space. :-P
@@danellescritters aww yeah just give them time and tlc. I have 2 female cuban tree frogs, they're only about 3 inches or so now and they'll double or more in size, so they're very timid right now but they're warming up quickly to me, and boy they are voracious eaters! A store near me, Reptile Island Rancho Cucamonga, is getting a few captive bred Cuban False Chameleons in today so I'm going to go check them out! They had a monkey tailed anole that we loved and would just chill in our hands and wrap his tail around our fingers, but we waited too long and he sold 🥺. I haven't been able to find any emeralds in person but I did find 1 website that offers captive bred for $99/ea, I just worry about them shipping in this heat wave right now. Love your channel, keep up the great work! 😁🙏
Thank you for your good advise, one of my cresties is soooo scared, he has already dropped his tail so that ship has sailed. But I would love to be able to take him out sometimes. But im also scared .. he totally freaked out last time and it feels impossible to even get close to him. I'm scared he will fly out from the terrarium and hide somewhere in my basement 😬
That's definitely a tough one. I would start by spending a lot of time by the terrarium talking. I know it sounds dumb, but they do get used to hearing us and seeing us and then nothing bad happening. Then I would open the enclosure and just hang out with your hand resting in there so that he gets used to it not chasing him. If you can it is also great to offer bugs on tongs (though it only works if he thinks bugs look tasty). It can be difficult to tame a lizard that is really afraid. These are the techniques we are using with our male emerald tree skink who is very afraid of us. He will now look at us though when in the beginning he would run as soon as he felt us coming near. It may also help to temporarily house them in something that is easier to get them out if you really want to work on handling. Then you don't have to chase them so much to scoop them up. Another option is to be happy with him the way he is and buy a second gecko (to house in a second enclosure). :-D
getting a tent/mesh to get them used to you is a good idea. i know sometimes people will just dedicate an entire room free of hazards or hideyholes to taming geckos
@@danellescritters thank you so much for answering! I have watched some videos of their behaviour and handling, and it feels like I'm starting to understand them better. I have been so afraid of getting close to them, but I know that's then only way to get to know them. I have three other crested geckos I can work with and that means I don't have to "tame" the scared one, and me and him can just take it slow. I don't have to handle him, im just happy if he doesn't freak out as soon as he sees me :) Thanks again, you have helped me a lot!
Good video. I like to listen to how people’s care differ, then tweek it to work for me
I'm glad you liked it! It is a great idea to take what you learn from lots of resources and figure out what works for you! I have been adjusting and changing things over the last couple of years of keeping isopods and I imagine that in another few years it will probably look different then it does today. :-D
New sub. I'm setting up a pod scape tank this week!
Thanks for subscribing! That's awesome. I don't have any pod specific enclosures, but I do talk to a lot of people who set them up at shows. This past show a guy purchased rubber duckies from me that he was setting up in a display enclosure. I always thought zebras would probably be an excellent choice for a pod display since they are bolder than many of the other species. :-D
@danellescritters thanks so much for your advice! My Springtails arrived today so I need to get a move on! I love Rubber Duckies but had heard that they're very shy. I was offered some Dairy Cows but now I'm tempted by some Magic Potions...
Many skinks like people for some reason
This is something I am learning. I will probably end up with a number of cool species. I love that they like people and that many of them can be kept in groups and do well that way. I am fascinated with community reptiles. :-D
@@danellescritters particularly blue tongued skinks, for some reason.. They love humans
Lizard doggo subspecies 😂
Good information thank you. I live in China and no pythons or boas are available. I am new to snake care. My baby hognose refuses to eat so i have given him to a breeder until he eats. I have a 1-year old corn snake who is very gentle but not so keen on handling. My African house snake is super mellow and calm, just delightful. My Mexican black king still thinks i am edible. My Cali king is small and initially musked but settles down quickly (I only handle him for about ten minutes at a time) and is very soft and wonderful to hold. Cool hairstyle😊
I'm glad you liked the video. It sounds like you have a great variety of snakes and some very cool ones even though you can't have pythons or boas. I do think African house snakes are super cool and generally mellow. Your corn snake may grow into handling better. Out of all of ours, only one dislikes handling. I do think kingsnakes are known for eating (and musking). We have a pair of Halloween milksnakes that musk on us a lot so the fact that you have got your California kingsnake to relax is great. :-D
I'm your 261th subscriber hi from 🇵🇭
Thank you for the subscription and welcome! :-D
Thanks for the video. Emerald tree skinks are the reptiles I'm most interested in getting, rivaled with hognose snakes. Nice to see that while personality is still a factor, the ones that want to interact aren't all that rare.
I was really surprised that so many of them are friendly! It makes me very excited to see what captive bred babies are like. I thought we may have eggs, but we haven't had babies pop up yet. Hopefully soon we will get our first captive bred little ones. :-D That being said, I love western hognose snakes as well. We have 7 of them and most of them are really friendly and several come forward when you open the enclosure to get out and explore. :-D
i have 4 CBB skinks who are yearlings now, 1/4 adores me, 1/4 is skittish but will take food from fingers, and gets scared ok, 2/4 are friendly and like to hang out, seem like the "norm" for ets. i think clint undersold them in his vid. i also think that the amount of hiding places in their tank relates to how outgoing they are, unlike most reptiles they seem more outgoing if there are more places to hide, so they can interact on their terms. they also seem to keep office hours for sociability. 9-5 they are cool with people, with peak human time seemingly around noon.
That's awesome! Mine are interested at getting out at about 10. Before that and they are like, "Hey...it's too early for this." They will readily come out most days till about 3 and then they are done for the day. They will happily accept bugs from 9am to 5pm though. :-P I'm looking forward to producing captive bred babies!
thank you for the video!!! I was wondering about them too. Currently dont have the space to give them a enclosure they deserve. Good luck with breeding them!!!!
I would imagine that they will only get better as they become more and more available captive bred and we get farther from wild caught stock. :-D They are really cool though and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I am definitely looking forward to some adorable little babies. :-D
So what's the greenish looking powder that you r feeding?
I make my own "roach chow" and I feed it to my isopods as well. You can find commercial products that would do the same thing. The powder is greenish because it has some algae powder in it to help boost nutrition of my critters. :-D
How do you tell what age your crested gecko is? My guy seems about the same size as the younger one you were handling during the beginning of the “tips” section.
Unfortunately there isn't a good way to tell age. The geckos grow a hugely different rates. I do think there is a genetic component and then there is simply how good they eat. I have geckos that are 3 months and are great eaters and are the same size as some that are 6 to 8 months. In my experience, crested geckos can get to adult size in about 18 months if they eat well or they can take as long as 3 years if they weren't great eaters when they were young.
@@danellescritters ok, thanks for the help!
They're sooo cool
They have been a lot of fun to watch! I am hoping I have both genders, but will probably track down a few more this fall to make sure we can get babies next year. :-D
Not familiar with Morph Market🤔 Enjoy your videos.
Morph Market is a cool marketplace for purchasing reptiles from. It is very popular in the US. I believe it is also pretty big in Canada, some places in Europe, and in South Africa? You should definitely check it out and see if they have things that are available in your area. :-D
