Texas POTA Expedition: 1,200 Miles, 11 Parks, 1 Epic Rove
I've been wanting to do another big Parks on the Air (POTA) rove, and this was the perfect excuse. Over three and a half days, I drove 1,200 miles across Texas, activating 11 new parks and making 1,167 contacts across 36 countries. Along the way, I also helped my friend Eli, HA9RE, a county hunter in Hungary, by giving him his final three counties for the USA-CA Award.

Great video, Tim! I have my rig set to the .044’s when I change bands and just happened to hear you early AM on Padre. I had fun following you on the map and chasing.
Hamstick is definitely the most underrated POTA antenna. I’ll never forget my inaugural experience with the Hamstick heading down to Moab with UNC (K7CO) and slaying DX the entire time off the ol’Hamstick. Man. Padre Island is so beautiful. Love that you had that beach to yourself. Definitely on my bucket list. My parents took me there as a toddler back in the early 90s. I’d love to return for some POTA! I’ve had some funny experiences activating my 891 at what I thought was 100 watts only to find out I’ve been QRP! Excellent video, Tim. Really enjoyed the narration and footage. Thanks for bringing us along on an awesome POTA adventure.
@@Utahforrest Thanks for watching! Hamsticks definitely don't get the credit they deserve. Plus, they're ridiculously tough. My 20m hamstick got dragged down the road at 80mph and kept going. You definitely need to make it back to Padre Island. It's an incredible place. Let me know when, I'll join ya down there. I'll be finding sand in my truck for years as a reminder of this trip. 😂 The saltwater effect is real. I've never had pileups like that before, especially not when running less than 10 watts.

Really phenomenal resource! You had one helluva rove for distance covered! Texas is a different animal for sure. I await the day a Hungarian man calls me on my next adventure. I used to do CW in motion when I was traveling for my work! Put many countries on the air in ND, SD, and MT!! Used to love CW while putting on the miles!!

@davidandrews2754 I’m convinced the hamstick is the most durable antenna out there. Over the summer, I was passing a semi at 90 mph when it flew off the car and got dragged on the road for about 1/8 of a mile. No damage, and it still works great!

@@WB0RLJ You would love it, Jim! I highly encourage you to contact Ivan at ProSkypper. It's a simple but clever design and only takes 5 mins to set up. I'm trying to figure out how to make something similar for 15m, maybe with some traps to decrease the size.

Such a rad antenna system. You’ve been slaying DX on it!! I’m embarrassed to admit this but I didn’t realize RBN is unique to cw. Are there no other ways to trigger it?
I believe it's primarily used for CW but can also handle a few other modes like RTTY. PSK Reporter and WSPRNet can pick up digital signals in much the same way the RBN does for CW. Nothing for SSB as far as I know.
