There is I believe a dangerous misconception about this subject. Some teach that anyone can get the gift of tongues and can speak in tongues at free will. I don't believe that. I believe that speaking in tongues is a gift that the Holy Spirit gives to a person at His will. One may be praying or praising and they'll suddenly start saying words they don't understand. They don't have to know. The Holy Spirit is speaking to God through them. He knows what is being said. Or someone in a church congregation may suddenly receive a message of prophecy in a human language they don't know and they or someone else will receive the interpretation. The act of speaking in tongues is in the control of the Holy Spirit! Not in the control of man!!!
Paul encouraged people to speak in tongues. He said he spoke more than you all. There are two purposes for tongues. One is that it is a personal prayer language, meant to be used by the believer privately. There is also a public gift of tongues, which is used in conjunction with interpretations to follow for the edification of the assembly.
@@dennispeters7650 I doubt you'll find what you just stated in scriptures. Nothing like a personal prayer language. NO GIFT IS GIVEN TO PROFIT THE PERSON IT IS GIVEN TO.... It is given for the common good. (1 Cor. 12-14)
