20180513 Three Times Fail - Cabo Falso Beats Dauntless Like a Rented Mule
20180513 Three Times Fail - Cabo Falso Beats Dauntless Like a Rented Mule
Cabo San Lucas was the most un-Mexican, unpleasant place I’ve been in the beginning of time or at least since I’ve been cruising Dauntless for the last 7 years.
It was expensive, literally, 3x to 10x more expensive than anyplace else I’d been in Mexico. The epitome of a tourist trap; I thought I was in Southern California.
Unexpectedly, Ensenada, being much closer to California, was truly charming. I could have been stuck there for months and been happy, conversely, being stuck in Cabo waiting for weather for 10 days felt like a year!
So, this video shows me attempting to leave Cabo just days after my arrival. I was now alone again; Larry was going to meet in the next week and I was hoping to be in Ensenada by then. Once making the right turn to the west at the very bottom of the Baja California peninsula, one heads due west to get around Cabo Falso, before turning northwest and then north to get up the coast. The winds are typically strong and right on the nose 15 to 35 knots. 15 is not pleasant, but is tolerable, high teems quickly becomes untenable for any length of time. Even under the best conditions, I would have a few hours of the strongest winds. .

A look Inside at Dauntless, a Kadey Krogen 42, built in 1988 I’ve been asked to give a little tour of Dauntless. Built in 1988 by Kadey Krogen, designed by James Krogen, this 42 foot boat has been the best economical paggagemaker of all time. How deep is the water over the bar?

    • @wxx3

      That was the issue, with me cutting the corner and leaving the main channel., as to why the waves were steep. After the fact, I realized that the depths were 20 to 40 feet, versus 60+ (I think) in the channel.

    Richard, I was following you for a couple of years. I was enthralled by your videos but then you stopped producing. Initially - I found you because of my interest in the KK42. Any search of the kk2 pretty much warranties one of your videos is going to come up. I'm wondering if your "Saga" as you put it - coming out of Cabo - changed your mind about boating. Anyways I hope you are doing well and that you are not too afraid of going out to sea again. I invite you to come onboard my kk42 I bought recently and we can venture out here in the Gulf of Mexico. I'm in Houston.

    Thanks for the nice comments. No bow thruster; ever since I broke it in 2015 in Germany, I've learned to live without it. The first line that i would tie would be any line from the dock would be secured in the mid ships cleat. then in a situation like the above, left full rudder and forward would press the stern and the rear half of the boat against the dock. Now, with over eager dock help, I can't begin to tell you the number of times, that would go cattywampus because someone on the dock would not listen to what I was saying but would tie the bow line too tight, holding the bow in and forcing the stern away from the dock.

    Super great to see what these boats can do with a confident captain at the helm. Thanks for sharing! I'm curious, did you find you ever had to use max throttle or what hp / rpm max was the most needed if not?

    • @RichardandTi
      @RichardandTi 3 роки тому

      While 1500 to 1700 is the best cruising RPMs, the engine will get up to 2400 RPM. the issue at that speed is that while it is making a lot of noise and burning a lot of fuel, the increase in speed is pretty small. I have had it to 2,000 to 2,200 RPM's for short times when I was in severe counter currents or the few times I misjudged the speed of a large boat on a converging route and had to get out of the was quickly, no matter the fuel. Thanks for asking.

      @@RichardandTi Thank you. I'm considering trading in a sailboat for one of these nice trawlers in a couple years and it's good to know even in the worst that you've seen, there was still a bit of power left in reserve. I'm the kind of guy that would cruise at the lowest RPM that won't damage the engine long term in order to save fuel / noise. Whatever RPM had the least vibration felt at or below 1600 RPM probably.

    • @RichardandTi
      @RichardandTi 3 роки тому

      @@GuyIncognito764 On start, this Lehman 135 idles about 600 rpm, which produces an annoying rattle, so upon start I always boost the rpms a bit to about 800. Normal cruise is 1500 to 1600, and with my 4 bladed prop, this ends up being 5.8 to 6.4 knots. If I really need to go slow, 1200 to 1400 it is. which is still 4.8 + knots Please email me directly and I would be glad to talk about whatever Richard

    Do I have a video tour of Dauntless? Not really. In large part because I was/am slow to the UA-cam venue, so I took videos and pictures of things interesting to me. I'll look through the archives and see what I have. Why don't I just do a video of Dauntless now? Because she is a bit disheveled, with 3 people living aboard, enough spare parts for crossing oceans and going around the world and enough rice to keep a family in Africa fed for years, though for Vietnamese only a year's supply.
