Villa Crest Farm - 2019 WGCF Conference visit - a Guernsey herd in Indiana
As part of the 2019 World Guernsey Cattle Federation we we privileged to be able to visit Villa Crest Farm - run by Verl & Gretchen Weaver in Goshen, IN.
The Villa Crest Farm Guernsey herd was started in 1939 when Virgil C. Weaver purchased four daughters of Green Meadow Ambler from Gwynllan Farm, Paoli, Pennsylvania. With the ultimate goal of breeding a truly great brood cow that could pass on type and production to her offspring, he chose herd sires from Ernest Martin and Dietrick Ulken as the initial mates for his select group of cows.
Verl has carried on this breeding practice using homebred bulls with a few selected AI bulls. The results of this breeding can be seen on the Tanbark Trail with numerous All-American nominations and Grand Champions. Villa Crest has also been Premier Breeder at the MidWest Guernsey Classic, the Indiana State Fair and the Ohio State Fair numerous times.
The May 2015 classification average was over 85 points, but the Villa Crest herd is more than just pretty cows. Villa Crest was the high herd in the State of Indiana for Milk, Fat and Protein with a RHA of 20,334 1090 685 for the 2018 year.
In 2007 Verl was designated the Indiana Master Breeder by the Indiana Guernsey Breeders Assn. and in 2008 was honoured with the National Master Breeder award.
Since the early 2000's Villa Crest has been in partnership with Ralph and Martha Turley on the Raemelton Prime Majestic family. This family has grown to become an important part of the herd.

Those are some bony cows
thats'cuz they's good milk cows puttin'their energy into milk rather than making beef! You want to see that! A fat dairy cow aint no good for milk, only the feedlot and butchershop!
Call some extreme vegans. Because these cows are clearly distressed, abused and raped!! 🤣
Какие красивые коровы
I loved the cattle

Lo mejor de lo mejor
Humans r d SICKEST living thing on earth
awd
This is a clear case of animal abuse ! This poor cows can no more walk normally because of their genetic pushed big udders. This stupid us-farmers should by fucked by a machine-gun of 30 mm !
Muy buenos animales demostrando cada vaca su potencial genético...
Are you SURE? :(
Most of these cows are high production cows with equally good conformation, which is why they are being shown as great examples of the Jersey breed. Most will have had their milk left on them for approximately 6-15 hours, in some cases the equivalent of missing one milking- this shows the ability of the udder to hold the cow's full capacity. The cows walk straight from the show ring to the milking parlour to relieve them immediately :)
Got it :) I'm happy that for once someone actually gives good advice and can have a proper conversation here on youtube...it's sad that it's so rare for some reason.
My advice to you, if you want a job, is to keep your thoughts to yourself. Don't impress them that you want a job to learn. They give you a job not to teach you but to get you to milk a cow. Try your best to handle the cows and get them in to the milking parlor when the milking starts and check the udders of the cows while the cups are on their teats to check the progress of milking.
I think they have machines, it is a small country side farm, not the big sort. I like that better since I will be able to get to know the cows better this way, I have always found it fascinating how much you can learn from an animal if you just listen to them :) My cat for example can more then twenty voice commands, such as sit, lay down, right and left paw, high five, military belly crawl and the likes...I taught him easily because I saw how he "spoke" and thus could tell him what to do :)
Good luck with your job at the farm. Do they hand milk or by machines?
I feel so sorry for them :( How can this be "showing"? They are basically showing animal cruelty, I have a hard time understanding it, it feels so cruel. You have cows? I'm going to work at a farm close by to learn how to take care of a farm for real, since I want a small scale one when it's time for me to buy a house and all that :)
You are right. These cows have not been milked for at least a month. They did it purposely to show them in the show. They wanted their udders to be laden with milk. It is not the pain I'm worried about. The milk rots in the udder and the cows milk production drops and she begins to dry up. The cows have to be milked several times a day to keep their milk production up.
Nice?? These cows feel very much pain. It's cruelty to animals to do that to cows.
true and sad;((
where was Shatzi?
Gooooa very very nice!
Those cows look like no one has milked them for days :( it must be so painful for them! Poor cows :'(
Yay youtube comments, turning every FREAKING thing into a political debate.
@pandapan78 No it's in North East Victoria in Australia :)
Dairy show cows have a fuller longer life than many comersal cows . they are the pinicle of the dairy breed and are respected and treated in a more humane maner than we treat our own kind .
@ContaMuir17a I can understand your point of view in terms of wanting better humane conditions, some of the farms I visited in the US were less than ideal. However, until we develop better varieties of grasses and non-animal protein sources in the world, the dairy cow and milk is still one of the best sources of protein in terms of return and number of people fed for the input of resources. By the way, a cow's breast is called an udder :)
