So you briefly covered Deut 22:28 with the idea of a woman having to marry her r*pist. The NIV is a real bad translation of this. The word is not rape, it is sieze, and it depends on the woman's consent and cooperation. In the previous scenario where the woman is r*ped by the man in the country, that word is chazaq. It is forced sexual assault. But the word in the Deut 22:28 scenario is tapas - to seize. Someone may say, "That still sounds like rape." Curious thing, though, is that this word was used in Genesis. When Joseph (and his clothing) was "seized" by Potiphar's wife. Did she rape him? Point #2 with this scenario - what if the girl consented and then the man fled after the act, and then she was set up for betrothal? (I've had some state it would be suicide because she was no longer a virgin, but hear me out.) And then after a couple months in the betrothal she starts showing pregnancy. She never made it to the marriage bed, so she can't be stoned. The law states after being found out that she marries her seducer. Now, what about the betrothed? He now can make full use of Deut 24:1-4. He writes her a bill of divorcement. She can now remarry (listen to that real close - remarry means to redo the marriage lawfully). Maybe Mary was never in any real danger based on the length of the betrothal.
