Crosley 167 Cathedral Radio: Demonstration of effect of using external antenna.

The rig works very well, and I am impressed by the selectivity function which does a nice job of clearing up a signal. My QSO was with Bernie, N1NDN, in upstate NY. I am in Rhode Island and my call is KE1RI.

      Nice to hear you had success with it, Chris. Most people are unwilling to take on an amp as old as this one. Mine is a keeper. It was given to me by a good friend. I was able to get this up to about 1,000 watts out while running on 117 volts (no 210 volts available). I first replaced all of the filter capacitors, rewired inside for 117 volts, and then changed the power plug. It's a good one. Now I have to make space for it!

    I've been wondering why "beam of light"? is it the magic eyes? or another feature like the Philco mystery remote, or optical phono pickup? Is there a new video demoing the complete unit?

    • @kb1awv
      @kb1awv Рік тому

      As you rotate the tuning dial, a focused slit of light shows through the dial and illuminates the frequency you are on. The beam will move left or right as you go up and down the selected band. When you change bands the beam disappears from the previous band and reappears at the current tuned frequency of the new band.

    Greetings, sort of neighbor (Southern New England, anyway) and fellow radio lover! Thanks for the great memories! I bought a pristine Radiola 60 with the fancy shmancy Radiola 103 speaker in the summer of 1985 at the antique shop on the second floor of that big store near the Oxhead Tavern in Sturbridge, MA - I was going to college in Waterbury, CT at the time and picked it up one afternoon before class, and it worked beautifully! It wasn't cheap, but man, was it worth it! Such a beautiful set...

      @kb1awv 4 роки тому

      Todd, they really did know how to create style! That is part of the mystique. If you don’t still have your 60 there are plenty of them still available at reasonable prices. And I think I know the store you described. I once bought a large music box disk there. Thanks for the comment.

      @@kb1awv glad to comment. I'm tempted to buy another but I'm overwhelmed with stuff as it is right now. Maybe I will down the road. The shop in Sturbridge was right off of Route 20 near the road (the Oxhead Tavern was set back from the road quite a bit at the back of a large parking lot), and there was a restaurant on the first floor. There was a balcony on the second or third floor and the building, which was actually a big house, was white. It was a great antique shop.

    Beautiful set... thanks for sharing, Ken. The two chassis in that set look similar to the ones in the 1929 RCA Radiola 66 console, too.... upon closer inspection I see that the 60 has one more tube on the RF deck than the 66... I remember my Dad's 66 and it had six '27s and one '45 on the RF chassis and one '80 on the power-supply chassis. I did a quick search on that $239 price and got this result: "$239 in 1928 equals $3,470.79 in 2019.".... wow!... definitely a top-of-the-line set there. ;-)

    I used a power supply to feed the 8V after removing U4 (78L08) and the radio worked just fine. From what I have seen it draws close to 100ma which is the max for that component. You might want to fit a 7808 (T0220) which can provide 1.5amp.

    I have received an email from Jim, WA9Z, who has diagnosed this problem as follows: Hi Ken, "I'm Jim WA9Z, one of the guys on the Ten Tec Wiki list of tech sources for out-of-warranty Ten Tec repair services. Your receive audio problem UA-cam video was forwarded to me by a customer who also owns an Omni 6 with the identical problem. I have troubleshot the radio and determined that the DSP CODEC bias regulator IC has gone temperature sensitive. The unit has been repaired and not only starts reliably, but has more full-bodied audio at the speaker. I suspect the analog CODEC bias has been limping for some time, then the IC finally developed internal leakage to need a bit of heat for internal elements to expand to the point of conduction. Hence, the 2-3 second effect where the audio ramps up. I'm cleaning up my notes and will eventually make the analysis fault mode and fix available on the Ten Tec user group. You have likely discovered a common failure mode developing in these fine old rigs. Thanks for posting the video. 73, Jim,WA9Z Exline Signal LLC"

      It is just a matter of my inability to remember menu items. I was consulting a cheat sheet as I was making the video and still did not invoke the DSP. I agree that it works nicely and should be used. My regular shack radios have even more impressive DSP. It is nicely done on my old Ten-Tec Omni VI and superb on the Yaesu FTDX3000. Of course I don't use it with very good signals. I like to hear better fidelity when I can. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Thomas: The problem went away by itself. Fortunately I received and email from a professional repair person who has seen the same problem with customer radios.
