Used a 100% poly batting instead of the cotton, as per your directions. Is this okay or I need to make a new hot pad? Wish I’d read a little more closely. Ugh! Reactions
are these trivets washable?
Yes, they are. It's best to pre-wash materials because the fabric can shrink but the silicone does not. I recommend washing on a regular cycle in the washing machine and hanging dry.
Question: I finally pulled out my supplies to make a set of these for me and my bestie. Do you have to sew the fabric to the silicone? If I got tired of the fabric and wanted to make a new insert then I'd have to purchase another refill. Is it because the silicone will slip off? What if you just make a longer cuff that folds over? Also, I'm sure you construct it the way you do because you trialed it but can you make the insert and lining together, sew together and then insert it?
Yes, you do sew the outer cuff to the silicone and the insert. The quilted interior runs the length of the silicone and the cuff. I could imagine creating a mitt the way you are suggesting but it would be a completely different project to be designed. In the current model the insert stays put under the silicone because it is sewn to the silicone. The cuff is sewn in as well.
Wondering why you brought out the new shorter version of this pattern as the longer one is fantastic???
I love both sizes for different reasons! The long mitt (Hot Stuff Oven Mitt) is great as a BBQ mitt and adds extra protection to your wrist. The shorter mitts (Hot Stuff Everyday Mitt) are available in transparent, red and teal-green and have a little more cuff to play with if you want to fussy cut your fabric or add embroidery.
I am excited to make a hot pad with these silicon inserts. Is it possible to top stitch to will this weken the silicon pice?
Thanks for sharing. It's much easier to do any topstitching next to the silicone rather than on top of the silicone. It can weaken it some, yes, and it is also difficult to sew that way with a domestic sewing machine.
My silicone mitt is much shorter - ATB 212T - than the mitt in your video. I think a longer mitt is preferable. Thanks for the video!
Where’s the tutorial ? I got the pattern but where’s the tutorial ?
The pattern is available at aroundthebobbin.com/shop/patterns/pass-the-hot-dish/ and there is a detailed video by Pins & Needles Kits at ua-cam.com/video/oM960hOvePQ/v-deo.html
How wide are the strips I couldn’t find how wide
Thanks for your question Drena. The measurements for all pieces are in the pattern instructions.
Why don't you use the free arm
Good point! I showed it without a free arm because I thought people might want to see how it is done if they don't have a free arm. But, yes, the free arm is much easier and if you have one, that is definitely the way to go!
Great helpful video a little more detail needed for binding. Love this product, pattern is so well done.
Thanks, I hope you enjoy making and using it! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the video. Your pattern is very well written but seeing it done really helps!
Hi Melissa, thanks. I'm so glad it was helpful for you!
Love it
Thank you!
Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. After each project I have to give a little giggle of SUCCESS!!! Yippee! These are beautiful & adds to one's own kitchen & awesome gifts for any occasion.
Thank you Linda. I'm so glad you've enjoyed them!
I have purchased the Pass the hot Dish pattern. Would like to know if I can use non-woven interfacing instead of the woven 100% Cotton interfacing. So excited about making these for Christmas gifts!
Hi Vicki, thanks for your question! I think you'll be happier with the result with the cotton interfacing. It handles heat better and doesn't wrinkle. I have not used the non-woven to test it, though, just basing that on other uses of it. If you do decide to make a substitution, make sure it isn't too heavy of a fusible -- you might want to fuse a square of it onto a piece of similar scrap fabric to see if it wrinkles after fusing. Because this basket can be folded flat and re-folded into a basket shape, you might experience some issues with wrinkling over time.
I loved seeing your finished examples - and I really like the look (and simplicity) of the one that you turned inside out - the topstitching looks really nice on it and voila! it's done! I can't wait to make mine. Thanks for the walk-through.
Thank you!
