With all due respect. Every time Seth comes on a podcast and starts talking about management, he just makes himself look bad. If he would stick to bear hunting tactics and how he pursues bears or stories of him hunting bears. I would have zero issue. That being said. It cracks me up to listen to guys talk like they’re an expert or someone extremely involved in and educated on CA wildlife management. Seth kills big bears. Consistently. There’s no doubt about that and he is an above average bear hunting. He hunts bears and started an instagram. Nothing more. Being a consistent hunter doesn’t mean you know anything about wildlife management. The way he speaks about population trends would make a 7th grade biology student sick. But as the VP of the American Bear Foundation, California Chapter. You are expected to do better. Him and I are in agreement that there needs to be adjustments in the management of bears and predators in general in CA. But his comments on management show his lack of understanding of population management. There’s nothing wrong with being uneducated. There’s an issue when you are spouting it all over the internet when you have a large presence on social media and that makes you a representative of myself and all the other bear hunters in the state of California. Therefore you have an obligation to represent us appropriately and from an educated perspective. Do better. As we all can.

Thanks for your feedback. I’ve never claimed to be a biologist or professional of anything but I don’t think anyone can dispute the bear population has at minimum doubled since we lost the use of Hound Hunting Bears. In fact the newly released reports from the department prove that. Everything I speak of is my own opinions and experiences. I guess you could say uneducated and I’m still learning and figuring it all out. It is a fact though that bear population in California is expanding and growing EVERY year. I do speak with many current and retired biologists and that’s where I get a lot of my information. As far as my social media…. I started it help fellow hunters learn how to hunt and find bears nothing more. Personally I think I have done good things for Bear hunting in the State of California along with many other people but thanks for the criticism I can take that and grow from it. Hopefully you have stepped into the arena and are advocating for Bear hunting and more Bear hunting opportunities.

@@Blackbearpursuit I appreciate that you are receptive to feedback, as a representative of all bear hunters in California, You have a responsibility to speak accurately. This is why my comment was made. You may view me as a hater, but I am not. I am simply someone who stands behind what you’re doing, keeping you grounded. Sure I may have expressed some frustration in the way you express yourself on these podcasts or social media, but I find it warranted. If you think that I, as a bear hunter myself, watch your moves closely. I promise the Anti’s watch you even closer. The unfortunate side of putting yourself out there in the public eye, which I applaud you for taking on. You stated that the bear population has more than doubled since the removal of hound hunting in 2012. This just isn’t even remotely factually accurate. The removal of hound hunting alone is not the catalyst for this kind of population growth. The last population estimates (prior to 2024) come from the 1998 Bear management plan. At this point the numbers were listed as 17,000-23,000 bears. As we know from the 2024 management plan the new estimates are 49,549-80,935. If we want to use simple math we can do this to determine how much the population has grown since the removal of hound hunting in 2012. For the sake of this math we’ll use the higher end of each population estimate for this (23,000 in 1998 and 81,000 in 2024). If we subtract the 23,000 bears that we’re on the landscape in 1998 we’re left with 58,000 bears that entered the landscape from 1998-2024. This gives us a population increase of 2,230 bears per year over the course of the 26 years from 1998-2024. 31,220 bears added from 1998-2012. We now have 54,220 bears on the landscape in 2012 when hound hunting was removed from the state. We can now see that over the course of the next 12 years we had a population increase of 26,780 bears (2012-2024). Using this simple math it shows a population increase of around 50% over 12 years, since the removal of hound hunting. These are simple calculations and extremes of both population estimates and not the official estimate of 65,405 bears for 2024. Everyone makes mistakes and none of us are perfect. You, in the position you are in, have a responsibility to hold yourself to a high standard and to speak accurately and precisely. Continue to push what you’re pushing and continue to maintain the open and positive attitude to constructive criticism that you have.

@@DWAIBud so in this podcast all I was basically saying was that with the number of bear we have now is drastically higher than when we could use dogs. Obviously that’s not the only reasons for the population growth but my point was that if we aren’t hitting the quota and that’s hard to do without dogs or more bear hunting opportunities such as a spring season or second tag that the bear population will continue to grow at a rapid rate. I know where I hunt and I know that every year I see more and more bears. I’m in the mountains probably more than most people and I see a lot of things changing. Like I said I’m not the best at putting words together and making it sound professional, and educated as you put it and yes I should work on that or I guess just go away and let the professionals do there job. It’s obvious that you listen and watch a fair amount of stuff I’ve done. What else have I said that makes me sound like an uneducated person? Also sure would be nice to know who is criticizing me? Pretty cowardly to call me out without saying who you are.
