I wanted to share some ideas on how to get our kids excited about learning during isolation. I am a primary school teacher who wants to help the parents of the kids I teach (and maybe some other parents too). I've worked with children from four to 16 and alongside some inspirational people. I will try my hardest to share some of what they have taught me. I know a lot of you are worried about having to home school your kids through these strange and isolating times but hopefully we can bring a community together to share our ideas, tips and resources. I'm also new to home schooling and ordinarily it's a battle to get my three to engage with any homework they've been set. Hopefully, these strange times might throw up some unexpected opportunities for us all to get to know our children as learners and find out what they want to learn.

Turn your kitchen into an Olympic curling pitch... of sorts. You’ll need old CDs, balloons, bottle lids and strong glue. Look online for detailed tutorials on how to make the balloon hovercrafts.

How to highjack your children’s game to get some writing done. This looks at using their own role play to create a script. The resulting film was recorded on my iPhone and edited in iMovie (thanks, Apple).

We have a look at how to categorise animals using a giant Venn diagram. At the end, there are suggestions for other areas you could cover (why not try categorising superheroes, book characters or footballers?).

Here, we listen to music and create abstract artworks collaboratively. It's also a great way to get children listening to music analytically. You can do it with anything - from film soundtracks to funk, Simone to Slayer.
Home learning in troublesome times.

Just a little bit of background into why I think being isolated with children might be a unique opportunity. This and the following videos suggest some ideas for what we can do to engage children in learning and enable them to take some control of what they want to learn. I hope it helps.
Building a home curriculum.

This video explores how and why building a home curriculum whilst in isolation can allow children to take control of their own learning. Generate ideas for activities from what they're interested in. Then, take small elements of them to create or research focused activities.
