the best management book was about WWI?! leadership learnings from The Guns of August
_The Guns of August_ helped John F. Kennedy avoid nuclear war with the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The founder of Trader Joe's called it the best management book he's ever read. Acclaimed biographer Robert Caro was inspired by this book to write Pulitzer-winning _The Power Broker_. And it's one of my favorite nonfiction books: I've read it twice, and then read 11 more books afterwards to chase down curiosities that came up while I was reading it 🤓
How has this book been so influential? It's a highly psychological book, diving into the psyches of both military leaders and nations during a very high-stakes situation: the lead-up to the first world war. And it's beautifully written, emotionally evocative, won a Pulitzer, and was written by a woman, Barbara Tuchman.
Contents:
1:21 *Ch 1: What makes this book remarkable?*
2:26 *Ch 2: The French national psyche*
2:39 Backstory of decades of conflict/jealousy between France and Germany (Franco-Prussian War, Otto von Bismarck, founding of the German Empire)
5:39 French insecurity leads them to Bergson's philosophy of the vital spirit and the military doctrine of the offensive
7:36 A caveat on Barbara Tuchman's style of analysis
8:49 *Ch 3: The German national psyche*
8:51 Pride in economic progress; insecurity in cultural standing
9:31 Kaiser Wilhelm II
11:40 Military philosophy and battle plans
14:31 War looms
16:31 German military officials' over-attachment to plans precipitates war
17:59 Connection to John F. Kennedy's handling of Cuban Missile Crisis
18:40 German path through Belgium: more psychological misunderstandings
22:25 *Ch 4: Psychology of military leaders*
22:35 French General Joffre's delusional arrogance actually saves France
25:30 Von Kluck succumbs to arrogance and wishful thinking
27:43 The French make a comeback
29:16 *Ch 5: Emotional quality of the writing*
29:32 The famous opening paragraph of The Guns of August
30:40 Closing thoughts on what makes the book great

As someone who is clumsy with traditional curling irons and burned myself before, I now use heatless curlers, dyson airwrap, and automatic curler based on different situations. Heatless curler take about a minute to put in hair and it needs to stay there for about 4 hours for the curls to stay; dyson airwrap needs to be used right after washing and drying the hair in order for the curls to stay, and the process takes about 20 min for long hair; automatic curler is a curler which you just take small sections of your hair, clip the ends on the curler, press a button, and the curler will curl the section by itself, this also take about 20 min for long hair but it only works when the hair is completely dry (eg washed the hair the night before, and curl it in the morning). Just some ideas!

In the past 10years that I’ve been consuming UA-cam I believe I wrote like 5 comments overall( idk it’s just very cringe to me) but I really wanted to say that your yt channel is such a breath of fresh air. I stumbled upon you bc of your Anna Wintour video and idk something just clicked. Be it motivation, manifestation , divine intervention, or just some heatwave you motivated me to learn more and connect the dots in this messed up world. I beg of you don’t stop doing UA-cam videos, I know it can be disheartening sometimes bc you are a small channel but I just know you will blow up bc of a video and people will realize the same thing I figured out a month ago. That one Lady Gaga meme where she cites 20 positive adjectives - that’s what I think about when I watch your videos. Grl just keep grinding and you will be big In no time 👍🏻👍🏻🙂🙂🙂 and besides the UA-cam consumerism influencer positive praise, from an InteLecTuAL lolz perspective your videos and analysis are so WELL PRESENTED and so engaging. Laufey is so honest and genuinely cares about her music and how it has affected herself and her fan base. I am a 71 year old womyn who has fallen for her vocals ,along with story telling , in a major way! Of course her love of jazz and classical music appeals to my generation! However, after attending her shows 3 times, her appeal to an afternoon audience ( mostly those 11 to 13 year olds) as well as the older group (in the evening ) is simply amazing ! Junia and Laufey are extremely comical and that helps a lot given where we are today in the world. Your explanations are so spot on and I will continue to listen to your podcasts!

The printed media is dead go to your newsstands. There are very few copy of fashion magazines which mean low demand when you have the internet. All this means is Anne Wintour is slowly losing her power as once powerful source of fashion information for the consumers was in print. The ad revenue is way down. She so desperate even try to hold on by creating her own personal brand which of course failed. Notice Anne Wintour missing from all the runway shows. Its because VOGUE America don't have the budget to fly her and staff to all those events in Paris. Nevertheless you did a wonderful job by expose her real weakness a plain understand of fashion on level of a high schooler .
