Exploring DC's Underground Trolley Tracks
Each day, thousands of residents, commuters and visitors traverse Washington DC's Dupont Circle, one of the most historic and iconic neighborhoods in the nation's capital. Below its well-traveled streets, however, lies a secret unknown to many who pass above: 75,000 square feet of abandoned tunnels that have remained inaccessible for most of the last 50 years.
Built in the 1940s to alleviate traffic concerns in the growing metropolis above, the tunnels allowed for trolley cars to pass under Dupont Circle and pick up passengers at two below ground stations. Following the closure of the DC's trolley system in the early 1960s, the tunnels were abruptly abandoned. Apart from a brief, unsuccessful venture in the mid-1990s to install a food court on the western side of the tracks, the space below Dupont has been largely forgotten by the world above. In the mid-2000s, a new organization called the Arts Coalition for the Dupont Underground was formed to pursue a new use for the space as a cultural destination. After years of petitioning, the Arts Coalition signed a 5-year lease with the city in late 2014 that will provide an opportunity to test out possible future uses for the space.

Exploring Philadelphia's Abandoned Rail Tracks
Переглядів 52 тис.7 років тому
Philadelphia is steeped in the rusted history of the Industrial Revolution; a city where abandoned factories and warehouses line former rail corridors that once served as the lifeblood of the 19th century American economy. This episode of Unusual Spaces explores the forgotten system of railroad tracks below and above Philadelphia's streets that have recently become the focus of urban planning e...
Exploring DC's Abandoned Silos
Переглядів 2,8 тис.7 років тому
The McMillan Sand Filtration Site is one of Washington, DC's most conspicuous mysteries: a fenced-off 25-acre grassy plain just over 2 miles north of Capitol Hill, marked by rows of tall concrete. This episode of Unusual Spaces explores the fascinating history of these silos and the tensions between neighborhood residents and developers eager to build on these valuable parcels of land. Exploring Tempelhof Airport in Berlin
Переглядів 31 тис.7 років тому
In the center of the sprawling metropolis of Germany's capital, Berlin-Tempelhof Airport stands as both a monument to a darker era in Germany's past and a link to its future. Built on an airfield where the Wright Brothers once demonstrated their Flyer before a captive European audience, Tempelhof Airport was conceived by the leaders of the Third Reich as a architectural testament to the boundle...
The old sand pits have been demolished. They are redeveloping the property into housing, retail, and some offices.
Site has so much security now probably nearly impossible to get in
I wish it were still an airport. So tired of that obsession to destroy everything that older generations built.
Septa should open all the stations and build more subway lines along with the gardening project.
Rats like crazy
I grew up around up the street near eastern state penitentiary and we used to party hardy down there especially when it was raining.. we'd have bonfires booze grass and girls.. Some of the older guys built a makeshift cabin, it was sweet 😊 Good times good memories of this spot 👍
Do you know if the old race street tower is still there? My father worked for both reading and Conrail and was a signal maintainer many years ago and walked much of that line
Flipping through stations because it's cold today and I found a German Grand Prix or so I thought. When they were heating their tires before the race I realized they had to be electric motors and I lost all interest. It's still the kind of track course I prefer but no one promotes oil and machine brands, etc. I guess we're on our way to pod racing. And then I might be interested again.
Where is this located?
Just keep it and use it. It’s an airport. Unfortunately I must agree that would be better to let it rotten then do that “project”. One day this millennial gen will do some promo video while starving, a lot of ideas and zero action.
Create a streetcar system and make this the terminal.
Where is the new Berlin airport? For many people Templehoff will always be associated with the Berlin Airlift 1948-49. This was the beginning of the Cold War.
I knew a guy that lived down there and i used to go here as a kid
Great place for an underground house music event 💯 there are some amazing House DJs in DC 🔥
Sad they changed it
How do I get in there where’s the entrance
I worked at the state office building on Spring Garden Street and sometimes walked in this area. For a while it was still an active rail line serving the Philadelphia Inquire newspaper. However they eventually moved their printing out of the city and they were the last active industry on the line. While it may make a nice bike and walking trail a lot would be needed to make it attractive to use. Since it has a large portion underground it would need a good secure lighting and video monitoring system to make people feel secure in using it. I know there have been proposals to reuse this line for transit service but there is no reason it could not be used as a bike-walking trail until it would be used for transit. Cleaning and adding lighting and any video system could be reused if it eventually was used for transit.
How’d I you get into here
Love the Vids. I post vids walking around in Pennypack Park. A lot of hidden art and wildlife. Check me out. 😎
Yeah but Philly is why more dangerous than nyc
Unfortunately they built over the section next to the police station. Idk if it’s fully blocked off now😕
Exploring Tempelhof Airport in Berlin Landing at Tempelhof Airport May 2008 - Closure of Tempelhof Airport October 2008. Tempelhof Airport was closed against the will of the Berlin population. Responsibility for this lies with the then Senate under the leadership of mayor Klaus Wowereit under the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the successor party of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED a Marxist-Leninist party) - Die Linke. More about Tempelhof on my UA-cam channel.
What a great video. More videos from Tempelhof Airport and Berlin on my channel. Visit Tempelhof, visit Berlin
Such nice ideas… However, the city government spends full time lying, stealing and avoiding any kind of work or responsibility… Truly an advanced civilization…
This should be for rerouted PATCO trains give that branch back to SEPTA
This could easily be turned into a reflection space focused on the effects of systemic racism on mass transit in America. It’s literally a no-brainer. If you disagree, you’re clearly a racist.
Is this place still accessible or is there cameras there now?
I've walked the Hi Line in NYC, and I feel it's too sanitized. I wish we could let these spaces in Philadelphia just exist without over sanitizing. Maybe build a bike path thru it but leave the sides to grow wild.
Yall should see it now 😍
Please don't destroy this historical site, let the field be used to train new pilots, like a flying club etc
dondt destroy, yes. Using Again as a kind of Airport or Aviation Club, No. Not in the middle of the City, lived there 12 Years to 2011. 2008-2011 was the best 3 Years of my time in Berlin
Looks like those tunnels would be good homeless hangout spots
I always wanted all 4 railroads in Monopoly 🤷🏻♂️
the train tunnel under Pennsylvania Ave. is being turned into a biking and walking path. And part of the elevated railroad viaduct was turned into a garden area with benches and a walking path that runs the stretch of the viaduct.
Between the SS United States, the Philly Naval Yard Mothball fleet including the JFK aircraft carrier, Philly has the worlds most amazing abandoned pieces of history.
The old Spring Garden station of the PRR was demolished days ago it’s another piece of Philadelphia history wiped out.
Put the damn tracks back, run trains again between large cities, and reduce truck traffic. That simple. Love trucks, but much more economical- and trucks could be used for the regional support from the large hubs...
The viaduct is only abandoned because Septa created the Center City connector tunnel under the convention center. Meaning… the trackage that serves as the regional rail on the former reading lines diverts and goes underground into what was the Reading Terminal where this leads to. The trains still run… they just don’t run into the old station they go underground then connect with the old Pennsylvania Rail Road terminus at Suburban Station.
You're a fool if you think walking down there is safe
This would be a very cool project, you normally see elevated or at ground level rail trails. This one has tunnels and rails are already moved, very cool!! Any chance the station is still there??
Awesome ‼️
Theres a big subway underground multilevel mall at 30th Philadelphia. It was closed because some homeless people tried to attack my mother and me. She called the cops and they shut it down.
Bring back the 🚊 but have a private company manage it.
3:08 precession ?
Indoor running track?
It should be used for transit. "Deterioration" isn't the issue. Much of it is stone, which takes millennia to deteriorate. Second, it's the protection of the right-of-way that's important. Third, how many people really want to bike or walk underground? Policing would be a burden. I'd like to see electric buses, possibly also trolleys from the Zoo past the Art Museum to the Convention Center (via the existing Rt. 15 trolley, this tunnel, and unused tracks of the old Rt. 23).
Cycle path would be good
People wouldn't use that as a walking/biking path because it's dark and easy to rob people in. Soon as you promise the criminals that there's a nice space they can go underground to rob or kidnap some young woman jogging the whole project is over.
Not exactly, there's only one way in and out and that's a disadvantage to criminals being monitored and easily captured.
Can you bring me here
48 market they took the rich there movie stars
They have a railroad under kirkbride
