Let’s Talk About Putting Yips!
Have you ever suffered from the putting yips?
This video is my take on what is the main cause for putting yips and how you can “future-proof” yourself from them.
From world class level professional golfers all the way to high handicappers, golf careers have been ruined by the “dreaded y-word”.
I believe the best way to prevent and fix yips lies within your technique.
So many golfers, even highly skilled putters, are manipulating and steering the putter excessively to get the ball on target and just distances.
By working on a sound setup and stroke you have a much higher chance of avoiding yips or fixing them if you have them already.
Nobody is a lost cause, let me know if I can help or if you have any questions.

Based on pushback I get on social media I believe there’s some confusion around “deceleration” and putting. Please let me know if you have any questions based on this video. Remember, this video isn’t as much my opinion but more of what I’ve discovered in over a decade of coaching putting AND using different technologies that actually measure acceleration rates when golfers putt. Ever Confused By Breaking Putts?
Переглядів 8963 місяці тому
We all get confused out there at times! On breaking putts we can often roll a good putt that breaks how we expected but the putt still had no chance of going in! It’s often related to how we aim our putters. Too often our body goes down first and is poorly aligned. The putter will even look square but it had no chance! One of the best putting alignment tips is to AIM YOUR PUTTER FIRST! Then bui...

Acceleration In Putting And Why It’s Bad!
Nice! I practice short uphill putts a lot on my off days. 3’ 4’ 5’. And then before a round or during a round I will putt to fringe for speed.
Sounds great! 👍
You know how I get better at golf... I play golf.
I’m happy for you. Some golfers like to practice to help their improvement as well. The best players definitely like to practice. Are they wrong and should take your approach?
@paulnayyar877 1 second ago Great video! My course in Canada just opened the putting green yesterday and it is very slow. Is it a problem if I spend too much time on speed control on greens that will get much faster?
I don’t think it’s a problem Paul. Golfers have to adapt to different speeds. Even on the same greens when you can have an uphill putt one hole, downhill the next. Good quality practice is always worthwhile imo 👍
I thought it was all about perception, in that as a right eye dominant player you may be actually aiming to the right of your perceived target
That’s not a trend I’ve seen Simon. Plenty of left and right eye dominant golfers with right or left aim biases. Best thing is to find out your own bias and work on it. We pretty much all have a bias. Better players just tend to manage it better.
This is exactly what I experience. Right eye dominant and I naturally see the target as 2-3 balls to the right of what it actually is, assuming a straight putt. I have learned to aim 1-2 balls left of left edge to put to center cup on a straight putt. I've heard it described as an issue of parallaxis which might be a technical way of describing the effect of eye dominance.
dr karl ?
Sorry I’m unsure if this is a question?
Awesome stuff as always. Great reminder b/c I have become lazy about using my mirror and ball position stick.
Im a right handed player, left eye dominant, and feel more comfortable putting left handed…..any thoughts?
I wouldn’t actively encourage that but if it works go with it. You wouldn’t be the first golfer to do it. Good chance you just need some help with your putting though.
Eye, foot and hand dominance is a very interesting topic. As I understand it foot dominance and hand dominance are more closely related than eye and hand dominance. It is very rare for right handed people to left footed (c.3%) but relatively common for right handed people to be left eyed dominant (just over a 1/3rd). The difficulty comes when you look at left handed people because you can train out left footedness but not eye dominance. So 40% of left handed people are right footed but nearly 60% of left handed people are left eyed dominant. My guess is that if you deducted those people who trained out left footedness either deliberately or because they only saw right footed people playing sport when growing up, there would be a similar %age of left handed people who were right footed as there are right handed people who are left footed. This is relevant for me. I was born left handed but I am old enough and grew up in a very backward part of England, that when I went to nursery the teachers made sure I only used my right hand for drawing etc. I am also totally left footed, playing sport the right foot was for standing on only but I am right eyed dominant. I play golf right handed, it never occurred to me to try it left handed and when I started the only clubs available were right handed ones. This brings me onto putting. About 30 years ago I switched to putting left handed. The difference was immediate, it was just far more natural. I now wonder whether eye dominance may be a factor in why it felt so much easier - although I agree with the video that the difference ought to be fairly small
Interesting stuff indeed Justin. I hadn’t really thought much about foot dominance. I’m personally left handed, left footed and right eye dominant. My eye dominance surprised me as I have been left everything all my life. But I now know there’s at least a reasonable number of the population whose eye and hand dominance don’t match.
Drove it thru the fairway
Where fairway ends to green is just semi rough. Course also very soft as still out of season so no problem stopping ball on green from semi 👍
How about for driver, 3 wood, long/mid/short irons?
Sorry I wouldn’t have an opinion on eye dominance related to the rest of the game. Mainly because I don’t coach those but also I haven’t really heard many people talk about eye dominance related to golf unless it’s for putting.
I'm just like Brad Faxon... hmmm😂.
Pretty good putter to try and emulate 😃
I love this tip. I always wonder if i have the line on my ball pointed in the right direction. Now ill use this tip to verify. Thanks!

Great video Ross. I think it would be even better if you had a microphone on your lapel though. The audio from that far away from the camera is a little bit hit and miss for me. But will be working this drill today, thanks
Thanks for the feedback! Someone else on social media mentioned the audio. I have purchased a microphone now 😃

Enjoyed this Ross. I've got a love/hate relationship with using the line. Any thoughts on long vs short putts? I find it helps most on short ones and can interfere with the creativity of long ones (if that makes sense).
This is very player dependent Keith. Some players use a line every putt, some only up to certain distances, some actually prefer to use it further away compared to closer, some use it only on straight/ish putts. Personally I use it up to about 20ft then don’t bother.
Great drills Ross. Easy to understand and easy to implement too.
Liked that Ross
Thanks Keith, hope you’re well.

Great advice been using the line even on short putts and putting pretty well on the course. Went to the practice green where I dont worry about using the line and found I was missing a lot of short putts
Lesson learned then Dave? 😃. It’s a good reminder for general putting/golf. Too often our practice looks very different to how we play. The whole point of practice is to improve our play. Good luck with your game and thanks for the comment 👍
@@rossmacleodputting Yes definitely... takes a bit more effort to line up all the practice putts but I will be doing it everytime in the future

Interesting video. I recently revamped my whole thought process on putting too. Didn’t realize cam and Rory don’t take practice putts. I started not taking practice strokes at the ball and if I do for a lag putt I will do it when looking directly at the hole behind the ball before setting up at the ball. I also stopped using a line. I was so focused on that line and if it was off a little it got in my head and I would always miss hit. So I set up the ball with the logo pointing at the ball so I still get the visual of the end over end of the ball roll but don’t have the line getting in my head at address. My putting has immensely improved. Another thing I see no mention of is the method of actually placing the ball. I looked all over to see how pros do this. For me I place the ball with my right hand and have my right foot in line with the hole so that my toe is on the line behind the ball. This has also helped with placing the ball. Without the line at set up I am really focused on the hole or the line and adjust my feet to the line while I am looking at the hole. Great video started following and look foreword to more video👍

I have a Spider putter. Does the arc on mirror work for a mallet putter?
Hi Jim, yes they work on all styles of putters 👍
Tell her to keep her head down
Please tell me that’s a joke?
@@rossmacleodputtingit’s not it’s a fact
“Keep your head down” is maybe the worst thing you can say to a golfer. Please do not ever say that to golfers. Especially kids.
Think a future major winner there. Affman.
Great video, buddy 👍🏻🏌♂️
Thanks, glad you liked it 👍
Good video Ross. Trying to find the happy medium following our lesson. Making progress on speed control calibration after a few rocky putting rounds 🤣Need to keep doing my putting mirror work as well. Grip still feels a bit uncomfortable with the higher left hand but sticking with it 👍
Glad to hear you’re sticking with it Iain. It’ll only get easier / more comfortable as you go forward 👍
Excellent tips there Ross, putting is not my strong point, I will definately be following your advice here... No idea why they had to put subtitles up - have you..?
I added the subtitles via an app. Just in case people don’t understand my Scottish accent 😂. Do you think they are unnecessary? Always good to get feedback. Thanks.
If I am watching a video with others around having the subtitles allows me to watch the video without bothering others. I don’t think they are necessary, as your accent is fine.
Subtitles are always good
This is great. I was entirely too upright. If you just bend at the waist, will the eyes be too in front of the ball? Do you try to stick your butt back a little when you bend to maybe bring eyes back on top of the ball?
You can bend nicely from the hips and get any eye position depending on how far you are from the ball. In my experience many golfers stand too close and get cramped in. Some do stand too far away but that’s less common. Also, not everyone should putt with their eyes directly over the ball. I have a video on “finding your eyeline”. Worth checking out. Thanks.
We should have just filmed this when I had my lesson with you last month Ross 🤣🤣
😂😂
Nice video. Do you apply a hit on the forward stroke or just use the momentum of the putter with the ball getting in the way?
Thanks Jim. It’s player dependent based on what they’re doing. For most golfers I’d advise erring on the “use the momentum” because they tend to “hit” due to rapid acceleration. Which is caused by short and/or slow backswings. There are rare cases where golfers benefit from applying a “hit” feeling though because they are at the other end of the spectrum. For every golfer I see needing to “hit” I see about 100 golfers who are better to “use the momentum”. For most I’d say speed up the backswing then “use the momentum”. I hope that helps you. Thanks.
Hi Adrian, some coaches believe eye dominance matters a lot. I’ve not seen the evidence to call it more than an influence at times. Lead eye dominant might like ball a little further forward than trail eye. When it gets too far forward or behind the position here then golfer has to make compensations. I’ve seen hundreds of golfers over the years with issues due to forward ball position. Some with backwards but forward a more common problem. Aim, face, path, strike, angle of attack, launch, amount of manipulation, etc all affected. That’s why for the vast majority I like this position. There are exceptions though.

nice work, Ross. Love this. so simple
Thanks Danny, glad you liked it 👍
Thank you Ross.
Hi Ross. Is it fair to say that those who accelerate through the ball might get away with it on putts up to maybe 15ft but begin to have inconsistencies with their speed control from longer distances?
Hi Iain, it’s definitely less of an issue closer to the hole. Partly because speed control is obviously easier closer in but also because that acceleration tends to ramp up more and more the farther out players get.
What distance do you do these from?
Hi Aaron, you can do this from any distance from even 5ft. Most commonly I’d do 20-30ft range 👍
thats me pretending to learn the speed of the greens before a round 😢
