Control Your Speed with this Simple Drill
So many bad putters putt this way; they “hit the ball with their downswing”!
This is a very simple drill to help you change the mindset and “hit the ball with your backswing”.
This is far more in line with how the vast majority of today’s tour players putt and it will help you control speed on the greens better.
All you need is some space and 3 golf balls.
If you would like in-person or online coaching with me please reach out. You can WhatsApp me on +447988667205.
My website shows all coaching options; rossmacleodputting.com
Don’t ignore your putting like many frustrated golfers out there.
With some good instruction / advice and a little work you can putt better, shoot lower scores and enjoy the great game of golf even more!

How to Build a Great Putting Setup

The pros don’t neglect their putting setup, and neither should you! A good putting setup increases the chances of you having a solid putting technique and a good consistent putting stroke. Don’t ignore the putting fundamentals, of which the setup is most certainly 1 of them. There are common faults I see with students every week when it comes to upper body posture and arm structure. There are a...
Do This For Better Putting Speed Control!
Переглядів 2332 місяці тому
Here’s an easy way to work on better speed control through using your backswing more effectively. This is something many many amateur golfers struggle with and many are not even aware of it being a problem. I often see golfers struggle with distance control and they often “hit” their putts. They have too much force in the downswing where the putter is rapidly accelerating through impact. This o...
HOLE MORE PUTTS!

This game is really really good for sharpening your skills inside 10ft. This is an area of putting where the best players separate themselves from the rest. It’s also an area where the best putters amongst the best players separate! CRUCIAL; I mention this (a lot) in the video but take your time and go through your routine EVERY putt. Let me know if you like this game and how you score out of 2...
Amazing Putting Speed Control Game!
Переглядів 6304 місяці тому
I’m a huge fan of the putting game “Goldilocks”. I first heard of this game many years ago from PGAT Putting Coach John Graham. He described it in a podcast. It’s been so long I’m not sure I’m even playing it as he described but I know this works really well for dialling in your speed control on the greens! If you don’t have good distance control you are always going to struggle, it’s the no1 s...
Let’s Talk About Putting Yips!

Have you ever suffered from the putting yips? This video is my take on what is the main cause for putting yips and how you can “future-proof” yourself from them. From world class level professional golfers all the way to high handicappers, golf careers have been ruined by the “dreaded y-word”. I believe the best way to prevent and fix yips lies within your technique. So many golfers, even highl...

Thank you for the link
You're welcome!
Good vid, when you get some more views and budget get a mic if you can to clip on for better sound quality
Hi, thanks for the feedback. I actually have a mic on here but it’s quite new so still playing around with it. Was the sound too quiet or quality poor? Thanks again.
@ it was a bit quiet but not too quiet
Really like that alignment stick idea!!! Gonna try that out , great idea for working on stability.
Yeah worth giving it a go, I really like it and believe it can help a lot 👍
Duh the shaft is round?
Despite the shaft being round this does work really well and that’s why many of the best players in the world use their putter shaft in this way 👍
Great as always, Ross! Funnily enough I had a lot of putting issues earlier this year (and reached out to you for some help). I’ve started to focus on a dimple and keeping my head there for a bit after hitting the ball and it’s really been helpful. Listening for the ball in the cup instead of looking at it.
does eye dominance affect your iron and driver swing? like some players tilt their head in the backswing before starting the swing if they are lead eye dominant.
Hi, I’m not convinced it has a big effect on overall performance but will contribute to head/neck tilts like you say 👍
Very informative. Really appreciate a channel dedicated to (for me 40%) of my golf game. I will enjoy learning from your experience. Thank you
Thanks Chris, appreciate the kind words. I hope my channel helps you hole more putts 😃
Repeating yourself too often.
Apologies just want to make sure messages get across. Will work on it.
I always wondered where my elbows were supposed to be! I'll put this to the test tomorrow! Nice, short, to the point video. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind comment on the video. A players build / body shape can play a role in where elbows go but definitely try this and see how it goes. Hope it helps 👍
Great video. 100% agree on sticking with it! My putting has improved hugely by repeating the same drills over and over and over! Keep up the great content Ross!
Thanks for the kind words and glad you’re putting well 👍
Great stuff! Perfect
Thanks a lot!
I love your vids!❤❤❤❤
If you’re only going to perform this drill in one place, you could choose to make it harder by requiring you have to start over at the first spot if you miss a putt along the way. You can’t progress unless you make the putt from your current position
Yeah that’s a good way to practice and a decent modification of this drill 👍 To do this drill at its best though I believe to do the 20 putts and they’d all be different. Ie using 4 holes, 5 putts from each.
Right eye dominance for a right handed player is MASSIVE! You will aim to the right without realising it. When the putter is pointing straight at the target it will feel to you that it is pointing way left.
Given the majority of right handed golfers are right eye dominant there’s no way they can be true. It will apply to some but definitely not all. Certainly not in my experience of measuring the aim and stroke of thousands of golfers.
Awesome drill, thank you! I'll give it a try....
You’re welcome. Hope it helps your putting 👍
Nice! I practice short uphill putts a lot on my off days. 3’ 4’ 5’. And then before a round or during a round I will putt to fringe for speed.
Sounds great! 👍
You know how I get better at golf... I play golf.
I’m happy for you. Some golfers like to practice to help their improvement as well. The best players definitely like to practice. Are they wrong and should take your approach?
@paulnayyar877 1 second ago Great video! My course in Canada just opened the putting green yesterday and it is very slow. Is it a problem if I spend too much time on speed control on greens that will get much faster?
I don’t think it’s a problem Paul. Golfers have to adapt to different speeds. Even on the same greens when you can have an uphill putt one hole, downhill the next. Good quality practice is always worthwhile imo 👍
I thought it was all about perception, in that as a right eye dominant player you may be actually aiming to the right of your perceived target
That’s not a trend I’ve seen Simon. Plenty of left and right eye dominant golfers with right or left aim biases. Best thing is to find out your own bias and work on it. We pretty much all have a bias. Better players just tend to manage it better.
This is exactly what I experience. Right eye dominant and I naturally see the target as 2-3 balls to the right of what it actually is, assuming a straight putt. I have learned to aim 1-2 balls left of left edge to put to center cup on a straight putt. I've heard it described as an issue of parallaxis which might be a technical way of describing the effect of eye dominance.
dr karl ?
Sorry I’m unsure if this is a question?
Awesome stuff as always. Great reminder b/c I have become lazy about using my mirror and ball position stick.
Im a right handed player, left eye dominant, and feel more comfortable putting left handed…..any thoughts?
I wouldn’t actively encourage that but if it works go with it. You wouldn’t be the first golfer to do it. Good chance you just need some help with your putting though.
Eye, foot and hand dominance is a very interesting topic. As I understand it foot dominance and hand dominance are more closely related than eye and hand dominance. It is very rare for right handed people to left footed (c.3%) but relatively common for right handed people to be left eyed dominant (just over a 1/3rd). The difficulty comes when you look at left handed people because you can train out left footedness but not eye dominance. So 40% of left handed people are right footed but nearly 60% of left handed people are left eyed dominant. My guess is that if you deducted those people who trained out left footedness either deliberately or because they only saw right footed people playing sport when growing up, there would be a similar %age of left handed people who were right footed as there are right handed people who are left footed. This is relevant for me. I was born left handed but I am old enough and grew up in a very backward part of England, that when I went to nursery the teachers made sure I only used my right hand for drawing etc. I am also totally left footed, playing sport the right foot was for standing on only but I am right eyed dominant. I play golf right handed, it never occurred to me to try it left handed and when I started the only clubs available were right handed ones. This brings me onto putting. About 30 years ago I switched to putting left handed. The difference was immediate, it was just far more natural. I now wonder whether eye dominance may be a factor in why it felt so much easier - although I agree with the video that the difference ought to be fairly small
Interesting stuff indeed Justin. I hadn’t really thought much about foot dominance. I’m personally left handed, left footed and right eye dominant. My eye dominance surprised me as I have been left everything all my life. But I now know there’s at least a reasonable number of the population whose eye and hand dominance don’t match.
Drove it thru the fairway
Where fairway ends to green is just semi rough. Course also very soft as still out of season so no problem stopping ball on green from semi 👍
How about for driver, 3 wood, long/mid/short irons?
Sorry I wouldn’t have an opinion on eye dominance related to the rest of the game. Mainly because I don’t coach those but also I haven’t really heard many people talk about eye dominance related to golf unless it’s for putting.
I'm just like Brad Faxon... hmmm😂.
Pretty good putter to try and emulate 😃
I love this tip. I always wonder if i have the line on my ball pointed in the right direction. Now ill use this tip to verify. Thanks!
Brilliant, hope it helps you 👍

Great video Ross. I think it would be even better if you had a microphone on your lapel though. The audio from that far away from the camera is a little bit hit and miss for me. But will be working this drill today, thanks
Thanks for the feedback! Someone else on social media mentioned the audio. I have purchased a microphone now 😃

Enjoyed this Ross. I've got a love/hate relationship with using the line. Any thoughts on long vs short putts? I find it helps most on short ones and can interfere with the creativity of long ones (if that makes sense).
This is very player dependent Keith. Some players use a line every putt, some only up to certain distances, some actually prefer to use it further away compared to closer, some use it only on straight/ish putts. Personally I use it up to about 20ft then don’t bother.
Great drills Ross. Easy to understand and easy to implement too.
Liked that Ross
Thanks Keith, hope you’re well.
Great video Ross. Ur very good at this

Great advice been using the line even on short putts and putting pretty well on the course. Went to the practice green where I dont worry about using the line and found I was missing a lot of short putts
Lesson learned then Dave? 😃. It’s a good reminder for general putting/golf. Too often our practice looks very different to how we play. The whole point of practice is to improve our play. Good luck with your game and thanks for the comment 👍
@@rossmacleodputting Yes definitely... takes a bit more effort to line up all the practice putts but I will be doing it everytime in the future

Interesting video. I recently revamped my whole thought process on putting too. Didn’t realize cam and Rory don’t take practice putts. I started not taking practice strokes at the ball and if I do for a lag putt I will do it when looking directly at the hole behind the ball before setting up at the ball. I also stopped using a line. I was so focused on that line and if it was off a little it got in my head and I would always miss hit. So I set up the ball with the logo pointing at the ball so I still get the visual of the end over end of the ball roll but don’t have the line getting in my head at address. My putting has immensely improved. Another thing I see no mention of is the method of actually placing the ball. I looked all over to see how pros do this. For me I place the ball with my right hand and have my right foot in line with the hole so that my toe is on the line behind the ball. This has also helped with placing the ball. Without the line at set up I am really focused on the hole or the line and adjust my feet to the line while I am looking at the hole. Great video started following and look foreword to more video👍
Hi, thanks for feedback and glad you enjoyed the video! Sounds like you’re doing great in terms of searching for ways that’ll suit you. That’s what it’s all about I believe. We’re all different. Golf is a never ending journey 😃
