12:43 Sorry David, had to call you out on this one - hope your face is doing ok!
After the demo, David came up to me and said I have permission to use his accident in this demo. He told me that if his story helps to save someone from the ordeal he is going through he is happy to let me share it.
@@jamescarter8813 Totally, I figured that and didn't mean to imply I thought David wasn't cool with it - I just thought it was a funny moment! I randomly stumbled on this video as a recommendation because I Googled "what is a lathe", but your engaging presentation kept me watching even though I'm unlikely to ever encounter one!
I thought this was going to be a quick finish. I'm not so sure now, but I will give it a try.
Very nice. 👍👍
Just take a heating torch and melt out the lead. It’s so easy
How do you finish such a lid? Wax wouldn't work so I guess it must be oiled. I guess you'd have to do the body in the same finish? Thanks for sharing. Is this using the same principles as lattice work?
What happened to the end? Did not show the final assembly. Can you list the paper that was handed out at the meeting? Thank you.
is it the thin ca
Excellent lesson! ....on how to cram 15 minutes of content into a 43 minute video.
Using tape to prevent the chuck from unscrewing is not necessary. Just run your lathe in reverse.
Besides woodcraft where in San antonio could one buy pen blanks, kits and supplies?
I can believe that someone would use a mallet to drive in a live center into a blank instead making a dimple with the drive center or punch! You could damage the race(s) and or put a slight flat on the balls of the bearing. Inviting damage or runout
Left after the first black screen - then there's a guy with his hat on backwards - indoors.
Great info, thank you! Where can I get the materials to make the accelerator you mentioned?
Thanks to our video wizard James Hokenson for making my rambling program into a more concise video. Hope you will all give this type of project a try. Lots of fun!
I just use linseed oil or mineral oil and apply 2 coats…on the second coat of the oils and while it’s still wet, I just apply cheap $1 Store superglue because it it very liquidy…..it dries in 15 minutes and 2 coats of the glue it’s smooth and usually don’t need to sand at all…been doing this for 20 years
Does this actually work?
@20:00 another great piece! Wow, this shows some amazing work!! Great job yall
@16:08 beautiful piece of art!!
Video with no sound isn't of much use
Need a fan or a vac it stinks bad 😂😂😂😂
Just FYI with my experience with Laguna their customer support is terrible and the lathe is comparable to any cheap China made product🤮
The lathes are made by Taiwanese company Xi'an Amco machine tools ltd, based in China. This is one of the biggest lathe manufacturers in the world, along with their milling machines and metal lathes. Around since '69 I think.

I am trying to make one with Hexagon steel stock
Nice but that wasn't a 3x3x3 block. Much bigger
it looks 3x3x5 to me...maybe 4x4x6...
Nice piece of work. Nice demo. Thanks Rebecca. Thanks Alamo Woodturners. 🙂🙂
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO GREAT IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!
Alan is always a pleasure to watch. I can't hold a candle to him with my skews, but I no longer regard them with fear and loathing. On a side note, I wonder what the deal is with the racket made the bench grinder in the video! 🙂.
If like to see a tool like this for sale or at least detailed plans. A bit too hard to tell how it's made on this video
Great demo. I'm really impressed! 😎
Thank you for watching. I did this demo to offer some ways to make tools to help in pen turning and help get rid of the scraps we all hang on too.
That pen is beautiful ! Never turned that material, will have to try that. Thank you for using our pastes.
It seems like nothing in my shop gets completed without Ack's Woodturning Sanding Paste and Polishing Wax!
Thank you so much!!
Thanks for the video great job sir , but I'm to clumsy for a pen blanks like that ,,it is beautiful 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Not hard to turn at all. In looking back at the video I realize I should have changed the cutter on my round tipped tool. It is also possible I cracked the blank from the inside when I put it is my blank vise to square the ends. Sanding the ends to square will eliminate that problem. So, I say go for it!
Try ACKS WOOD PASTES, you will never look back. Made in the USA, nothing bought in China, even our jars and lids. We add the most carnuba out of anyone, no one added carnuba until they discovered that was out secret.
Great evening of teamwork supporting our troops. We will send approximately 150 pens to our military folks in the next few weeks! Thinking of those who are not at home with family every day, and working on and protectiong our nation's security.

Does anyone know where to get the Aromatic Amines that Alan adds to the gallon of acetone. Thanks

Lori, really enjoyed your decal presentation. Have you ever tried any of the decal setting solutions that model builds use to flatten the decal?
Is the CA finish that was used on this video food safe?
I don't believe it is food safe because it could chip off in use. Better to use mineral oil or Mahoney's oil for that.
