currently i am building an off grid homestead in the middle of greece close to the aegean sea.
First cement works, digging holes, creating better views (3)
Starting the works on the land. Its hot but the fence is important so i have to dig a lot of holes and have to work with cement, sand, gravel and stones. Also cutting brunches to get a better view to the sea. Tzakis comes with his tractor to tell me some helpful things with water...and the view is getting better and better...

That is a million dollar view ❤❤
hello wear a hat🧢 👒 dude. that aegean sun is really shining in summers
Just came across your channel 😊 New sub. I would build a new cabin (if it's legally allowed) because there isn't much left of the old one. I'd make it so it blends in with the land as much as possible. I'd also keep the old stones, etc to repurpose them in other projects. Good luck! Can't wait to follow your journey.
Hello. What was the price on sqm?
question for the greeks watching this, why is that cabin made with that red dirt? what is it? is it a special dirt that you create, or just normal dirt that you can find all over greece in the ground?
Welcome to Greece man glad we get people like you here I'm Kinda far away for now but once i can help we will exchange emails or whatever is convenient for communication
I just found this channel now. Casey keep going I can't wait to see the development on your new land, I'm thinking one day I will do the same.
Your problem with the water hose has a simple answer. (The guy who brought the canister showed it to you.) To stop the water, you just have to raise the hose end above the water level in the cannister. In order to "start" the water again, lower the hose end level below the water level in the canister. No need to pinch and tie the hose like you do, just hang it somwehere higher. Gravity will do that for you. Also, i saw you tried to use the smaller and longer hose. It won't work with a hose that is not straight, and has loops on it. I really appreciate the courage you have to start this project all alone, off grid, in the middle of nowhere. Please keep posting vids!
What you are trying to do is very difficult. Get some power tools and vehicles t work the land if yo can afford the latter. Never wear black. Get some help and know - how from the locals. Maybe hire some hands, dont don't do it alone. Climate in Greece is difficult now, especially in the summer. Your first priority is water supply. You need to change a few things in your approach, or you can easily become disheartened. Eat well not just vegetables but meat as well, you need all the strength you can get. Sleep well. Watch out fo snakes, some are poisonous and deadly. Get a first aid kit. You call 199 for an ambulance. Ground clearance is a must, not only for snakes but for fire prevention too. Good luck, wish you all te best.

Nice video !! Here is a tip for your water. To prevent your water from smelling or grow algae inside you need to buy black water tanks instead of those clear ones. That prevents the light from the sun to penetrate the plastic tank and make your water 'bad'.
Good Job Casey. A few tips. 1. Buy a straw hat. You 're exposing yourself a lot to the summer sun. 2. Use the derelict stone house as a tool shed. With all these olive trees you 're gonna need a place for the harvesting equipment and you don't want all this stuff inside your house. 3. Wear garden boots. Vipers are rare but they are a thing, especially close to water and/or stone walls. 4. Make sure you put some effort in draining ditches. It can rain a lot in Pilion and you don't want streams appearing suddenly near your house. 5. The place is excellent for bee keeping. Maybe you wanna give it a try, especially if you plant fruit trees. 6. Plant a few plane trees. Pilion is full of them, they become huge and their shade (and sound) is amazing. 7. Collect rain water for watering but also as a readily reservoir against forest fires - they can be really nasty. Overall, congrats on your vision, effort and respect for the place. Pilion is one of the most beautiful places in Greece.
#1 I would start working at sunrise and after the sunset, rest of the day stay in shade, no need to kiill yourself while chasing the dream. Get some chicken, they are deadly to snakes.
Solids tips @archimedesnation! Vipers and scorpions may nest under stockpiles of wood or rocks, so please beware if you are about to move something and always use gloves. You can recognize vipers by the horn on their forehead and their fat short body that leads to a thin tail, or the zig zag patter on the body (not all vipers have the zig zag pattern though). As for the water tank, you have to move the trapped air out of the hose by using water gravity and at the same time suck the trapped air out. As soon as the air is out, it is easy to use. You don't have to tie the hose tightly for leaks as soon as you keep the hose tip above the water level in the tank. Also please use a suncream along with the straw hat archimdesnation mentioned. You may also use a camouflage shading net for extra shadow (for you and your car). One last thing is that concrete and heat don't work together. Make sure you moist the concrete surface regularly for the first days and not let it dry to the environment temperature. This way it will get stronger than it would if it dried out. Can't wait for more content!
Although the view is fantastic what makes the video interesting is the telling of the story. Keep going!!
Καλωσόρισες from me as well. It appears that you have a lot of work ahead of you. Investing in a larger (taller) tent and a mattress will go a long way. A chair and a table also (cutting up veggies close to the ground and eating on the ground, gets really old, really fast). Also, I'll second the power tools idea, maybe using a power generator. I'm no expert, but the house on the property may be far from "renovatable. " :-( But to each his own. I understand the need and want of a very large garden. But do you really need a fence? Yes, in the Mediterranean climate, the harshest season is the summer. In any case, welcome, and I wish you success!
i am often in regions close to greece with similar geological structure. look around what the locals do with water. listen to their advice+what they do. simply copy that. saves tons of money and headache. (just had someone with money that thought to be more clever... they are 150k down the line and still no water ;))
The beautiful Water is mesmerizing, and the view will never get old. You're getting started now, and that's all that matters. This will be awesome!❤
Wow! Amazing! how to see land opportunities to buy there also?!
Wow
If you are ever going to build a house there use massive stone blocks with insulation on the outside to prevent the heat from entering your house. Just did some foundations recently and even doing it with a mixer is very time intensive. Consider using a tool to dig all the holes at once and hire some workers and cement truck for one day. This will cost money but saves a lot of time, construction is team work

Enjoy your process, best of luck. Regards from Norway 😊
Get yourself some power tools! It only going to get harder! Love the views! Olive trees with sea views🥰
Hello Nick, thanks for comment! this is just the beginning...step by step..now i am waiting for the caravan, than i need more storage room and than more tools. Greetings from Greece.
@@caseybachmeyer Amazing! Keep up the work and the videos! I have a similar property near Thessaloniki with Olive trees and sea views too! I have built my house but the land needs a bit of work which I will be excited to do! Will be moving back in a few months! Greetings from Australia!
I was here from the very beginning :)
I M JUST SAYING HELLO ....I LINE IN ARTA ....IT IS PERFECT YOU CAN SEE THE SEA FROM YOUR FIELD .....
I live in Volos and i often visit Milina(my wife has a small house there). I wish you all the best!
First thing you need to do is build a big shed to put your tools in then build a bench in it & one outside. Buy a generator, some solar panels. Good luck
A new lamborghini tractor, that neighbor is doing pretty well financially :-) Agree with him to consider buying as large a tank as you can house, it'll be useful in any case, perhaps even put a small roof over it to protect it a bit from the sun and channel the rain water you capture on that roof to help keep the tank topped off in the long run.I would also look into buying a Silky Forester saw, you would be able to easily prune branches from the ground rather than having to climb into the tree which is a health and safety concern but also harmful to the tree. Lastly, I probably would have left the branches on there until later in the year because a lot more energy is currently stored in the branches and leaves than in the dormant winter period. We're also contemplating moving 3 or 4 olive trees so i'm particularly intrigued how that will turn out. We live in Italy and olive trees are protected so you need permit to move trees, even if within the same parcel or grove.
I admire your courage and love your dream . And thank you for sharing your journey Casey 🙏
My goodness! The background noise sounds similar to our cicadas in the United States! So loud
This is the sound of Greece during the summer, even in Athens and the other major cities.
What a view 😍😍
Good on you for using your own hands and energy - it’s free. I recently bought a grubber tool like you’re using. Makes digging holes so much easier - I used to use shovels but they don’t work when the ground too hard. Enjoy your view.
Casey I think you need some help or buy your self a cement mixer it will save a lot of work I wish I was there too help you.
My mother had a hip replacement surgery recently, and she enjoys watching your videos
Hi there, thanks a lot for the comment! Please tell your mother many greetings from greece and hope she will get well as soon as possible!
I hope once you start building a house they don't start selling land around you for other people to build once you've paid to bring the services in , that's the norm in Greece, good luck with the project
Hi Paul, thanks for the comment, but there is only forest around the land, which nobody can buy or sell.
Υοu should NEVER prune olive trees in the summer! Unless you want to cut it down. All the tree juices will bleed of the cuts and the tree will probably die in the heat of the Greek summer.
Τι λυπηρό το όλο θέαμα! Κ καμαρώνει κιόλας, που είναι μέσα στο δάσος κ κατακρεουργεί ελιές! Ας έκοβε τουλάχιστον πεύκα!
Don't say never. Farmers all over Greece do so for good reasons. For feeding their goats ie. Yes you can prune in the summer. For inhibit growth, especially for older trees. Just make sure you follow-up with a chip hopper before the branches dry.
@@joeeigo9820No! Absolutely no! He is right. We never prune olive trees in the summer. Farmers may cut some branches for the goats. They don't do regular pruning. I grew up on an farm with olives and pistashio trees. My father, my grandfather, we now, never pruned olive trees in the summer. Especially in places where it doesn't rain enough, it shouldn't be done. This is something I am hearing for the first time. It would be good to be careful with the advices we give.🌺
@@user-bs2ni5pg3g in general I agree. The casual pruning time is definitely not in the summer. It's too hot for that anyway. But as for everything there is an exception I apply on our farm. One example: last Winter you cleaned the crown of an old tree. It doesn't have fruits this year, but it reacted with strong new growth in form of small shots on the main branches. Cleaning those in the summertime has the advantage, that it doesn't regrow as quickly, as it would in the other seasons.
@@joeeigo9820 The only trees that can be pruned in the summer in the Greek area and its climate, are citrus fruits. And we do this carefully. That is, in the case where there are sick citrus fruits trees and they must be removed from the rest of the healthy ones. However, olive trees do not produce fruit every year. If they are pruned in the summer and because the summer in Greece in the last decade reaches October, the new young shoots will be burned by the strong sun, as they are tender and sensitive to weather conditions. This has a high chance of happening. So we gain nothing, as we will have to wait next spring for new shoots. In addition, we may cause damage to the tree. The search for and replacement of the old varieties of olive trees, with new ones more resistant to the heat of the Greek summer, is already being discussed. "Therefore let us be careful, that we may have."
Mann, dir zuzusehen bereitet mir Kopfschmerzen. Das zaghafte Gefummel, die Keucherei. Hättest mal lieber im gut klimatisierten Fotostudio in deiner stylishen Comfort-Bubble bleiben sollen 😜
Beautiful view! For the love of God get a post hole digger. It’s painful watching you use handfuls to get the dirt out. Hang in there!
Buy a good pickup truck and a shit load of good tools. You'll need it. You can't make those wholes by hand. There is no time for that.
The water is gorgeous!!!
