      Known as “The Chicago Siren” copyright and patten, invented in Chicago, were the old school bladder-emptying sirens. They were through out the country and old since the 50’s-60’s. A lot were replaced with less urgent impending danger sound to them.

      Most tornado warnings are radar indicated as well, meaning there is no visual confirmation of a tornado. Instead there is radar data indicating an area of concentrated rotation within the storm that is capable of producing a tornado at any time, and very well could be.

    No transformer fire there. That was a customer service box on fire. The popping sound is caused by cables shorting out after the rubber covering is cooked off. Don’t breathe that smoke in. Toxic smoke! There is no way to “turn the power off”. It’s fed from an underground network. All the transformers on that network continue pumping power even if one fails. The splicers would need to cut each cable feeding that service box. That could take time? Fire departments are not qualified to fight live electrical fires. They cordon off the area to keep the public away. They’ll wait for the governing utility to cut off the power. Then & only when directed by the utility would the fire fighters be allowed to suppress the flames.

    • @rmhanseniii

      It’s actually a transformer vault.. in the states we put pad mounted transformers underground in city’s. You could tell because smoke was pouring out of the other one up the street

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 Рік тому

      @@rmhanseniii I’m in the electrical construction field for over 35 years. Without knowing which city this video was taken? I used to work for ConEdison in the Bronx Underground. The actual fire would be in a service box. Your right the actual smoke is originating in a transformer vault. The limiters are detonating in that transformer vault. ConEd actually uses network transformers. The ones on the sidewalk are hung off a steel I-Beam & are for dry locations. They have a sump pump that turns on when the water level gets too high. The ones in the street are transformer manholes. Those have submersible network transformers with a network protector. It’s inside a steel case dipped in rubber to prevent corrosion. They are pressurized with nitrogen to 4 psi. That’s to keep the switch gear dry & keep the water out. In a city like this the network transformers & mains are tied together. Unless they lose enough feeders or enough mains will power be affected. Network mains are very dangerous to work on. It is always energized. Usually limiters melt to isolate the fault. However fault current must reach in excess of 2000 amps for them to melt.

    • @rmhanseniii
      @rmhanseniii Рік тому

      @@johnclyne6350 wow… this is why I don’t talk. It did seem small for a vault but I didn’t know what else it could be. It’s incredible the technology they have now. It looked like it was NYC, if so how do they keep the salt out?

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 Рік тому

      @@rmhanseniii They can’t. Every year it’s like De Ja Vu with salt eating away at underground cables in service boxes & manholes. There are several good videos posted on UA-cam of exactly the same thing. Usually there is loud popping heard & of steam & smoke coming out of the sub surface structures. Lots of comments about ConEd should be turning off the power? Well that ain’t happening. Overhead has mostly radial systems. Some network overhead systems in cities. Overhead is a much better system but is susceptible to wind/ ice/ snow damage from trees. Animals contribute to lots of interruptions as do car accidents & sometimes equipment failing. With overhead you can see with the naked eye the problem. In underground you need to be like Superman to see through dirt to find the problem. I have yet to meet him.

    People say that underground power utilities are safer underground like that, but I disagree. I think it's even more dangerous. Imagine someone walking over it at the wrong time when the ground was possibly energized. That person would have a very high chance of being electrocuted. That's why I prefer not to ever be in any city that has underground utilities. I live and stay out in the country where it's a hell of a lot safer for many reasons.
