Gorks? It is definitely clear you haven't watched any of the Star Trek shows, or Star Trek Online. Gorn. If you've watched Jupiter Ascending, they are known as the Sargorn. Every single movie iteration seem to incorporate 'gorn' as part of the name. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features them as the primary antagonist in seasons 2 and the upcoming third season. To make full sense of the start of season 1's opening minutes you'll want to watch Star Trek: Discovery as the first 15 minutes is the conclusion of Discovery Season 2. As far as Goblin Slayer's Shaman goes, it makes absolutely no sense that he does not like milk yet he absolutely enjoys cheese. It's made from milk, even if only the curds. My personal choice for characters in D&D, Pathfinder, and others that will allow it, is lizardfolk monk. My personal beef with the lizardfolk is the absolute need for WOTC (and Paizo) to kill their intelligence score for the simple reason they don't interact with the outside world. Given Intelligence in 3 / 3.5 / Pathfinder 1e is used for skill points and for several key skills that help them, it makes absolutely no sense to do so. A drop in Charisma makes much more sense. As such, for Pathfinder I always heavily customize the character race to my personal taste. My Pathfinder character os always the Unchained Monk as it allows me to not take the useless-to-me abilities that I never use. Survivors of a fallen empire: that is the canon backstory for the ancient days of Faerun. In Neverwinter Nights 1 the player travels back in time in Act 3 and physically visits the ancient empire before the climate change happened to effectively end the empire. Neverwinter Nights 2's main game follows the idea of lizardfolk being forced out of their tribal lands to come into conflict with human coastal towns and villages. You have a choice to either take them out or gradually form a partnership with them. The Lizardfolk who joins you (Stan?) is only temporary in Act 1 but a strict NPC in Act 3 if he survived. As far as the divergence of Lizardfolk appearing first in 4e? That's not really true. They had many different types and abilities in 3.5 monster manuals. I think Monster Manual 3 and 5 are where they introduce them. Blackscale, Poison Dusk (The only small-size, literal chameleon), and two others in MM3, and I forget the single entry in MM5.
What can i say lol other than vague memories of seeing kirk wrestling with a big ol lizzy suit never was much of a trekkie fan (sw neither) i also remember lizard folk in V. Appreciate the feed back! Have a great weekend
@@MiddleAgedBarbarians I had seen V when it came to TV as a mini-series. I still occasionally quote the line "I am just" to confuse people. I never did see any of that reboot, if only because I didn't have cable at the time. The Gorn have been drastically changed since the TOS introduced them. While Star Trek: Enterprise had one episode with a single Gorn, "In The Mirror, Darkly Part 2", it was mostly in shadow to the point you had to uhave a gigantic screen just to see it. They appear in one of the early episodes in Star Trek: Lower Decks, but only for about two minutes. It's a "wedding" scene in that one. Star Trek Online has them as a playable race on the side of the Klingons, though I am not sure if you still need to play the Federation up o maximum rank anymore. The last time I touched it was a month before the game went Free To Play. Even with maximum height sliders, the Gorn PC is still shorter than some of the Gorn NPCs wandering Qo'Nos In the Star Trek (2016) game, which cannot be purchased anywhere anymore, the primary antagonist for the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise crew are the Gorn. These, however, are from a different dimension and came to this dimension through an experiment done on the New Vulcan space station. They are very blatantly lizardlike and a distinct lack of clothing. Their warrior caste are green, with digitigrade legs, leaders red with plantigrade legs, and scientists blue. This takes place between Star Trek (JJ Abrams' Kelvin Timeline) and Star Trek: Into Darkness. The latter movie has McCoy actually referencing a VERY specific event in the game regarding him 'almost losing a hand to Gorn Hatchlings' Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actually introduces the audience to the Gorn early in Season Two. However, they don't SHOW them until a few hatchlings start to hunt the Away Team. The hatchlings have gone a bit Xenomorph in appearance and mannerisms, even commented as such by a few TrekCulture videos, and the only time the audience actually sees a clothed Gorn is the final episode of season two, though that is one in a space suit and seems to be an adult. Hopefully we'll actually get to see more of them when Season 3 finally launches. If you're curious, you can see all of the Star Trek series on Paramount+ except for Star Trek: Prodigy, which was purchased by Netflix before its season 2 launched. One upcoming film, not series, coming out soon is Star Trek: Section 31. The main character there is one who left Star Trek: Discovery at the end of Season 4. The other one is Star Trek: Academy, which features one of the VERY bubbly female bridge crew of Star Trek: Discovery as a teacher for StarFleet Academy, which takes place after Season 5 where the setting is roughly 2,000 years in the future with regard to TOS timeline. Sorry for rambling! 😀
@arrankharchkrall2916 no worries, that was an interesting read.. i think the closest i get to either one of those franchises is the Fan Boys movie 🤣
Who's the artist on the thumbnail art? That's hella gorgeous
I will ask the evil producer and let you know 😅
They tell me that it's either gonna be official wizards art or really good a.i. art (each vid has three thumbnails so can't say with precision) so pretty much the same thing? 😆

I think the options presented in the 2024 PHB make it easier for brand new players to create characters and get them onboard. For anyone with experience of TTRPG's it feels a little simplistic but given the 'secret formula' is stated it's easy to make your own backgrounds which I suspect (like yourselves) will be present in the DMG. Early in the video you did some to mix/swap BACKGROUND and BACKSTORY. Technically two entirely different things so that's something to be mindful of. I am only speaking from a a 5e baby though so I've always had to select a background as part of making my characters. Overall the video raises fair points and criticisms though.
Hi @psymonkee, thanks for the feed back! We will be more mindful in the future to not mix terms. And yes, im anxious to see what will come out in the DMG. the preview videos so far have been enticing, we should be putting our a vid maybe next week on that. Have a great one!
Personally I like the shift of ability bonus from species to background. For my new campaign I've allowed players to swap out 1 Ability Score and Skill of their choice, then we choose whatever for the flavor. Basically, I like the bones but not the flesh
Sounds good! How do you handle the origin feat?
Bevor Backgrounds i was angry about level 3 Subclasses -> Cleric, Warlock, Sorcerer, Paladin (feels wrong) With the new Backgrounds i can`t,... It is so bad for me, i want to hit something. You can`t escape this, with every character you will see this abomination of a rule again! DMG will most likely have a optional rule -> thats not the right way, it should have been in the PHB.
Do you not like subclass options or thing those four classes should pick them before? What bothers you about the backgrounds in '24 phb?
@@MiddleAgedBarbarians in a: "Warlock, whos is your patron? I am lvl 1. I dont know yet. " way. Divine Soul Sorcerer -> level 1-2 it feels like lost levels for your character idea. Not very happy about it. Backgrounds is a real problem for me. I always build characters "rule" conform, with no DM fiat. (AL usable) And with long Backstory/History. -> PHB pg177 you can still change the "details" of the narrative. I would interpret that as farm Background is still a farmer. 5e Customizing a Background To customize a background, you can replace one feature with any other one, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds. ..... Finally, choose two personality traits, one ideal, one bond, and one flaw. If you can’t find a feature that matches your desired background, work with your GM to create one. ^^ Thats freedom (loved the extra languages) And the locked Attributes, Feats are for most people a no go but you can`t switch ANYTHING. -> Rogue Prof Thieves’ Tools and Chriminal Background Thieves’ Tools You want your Tool Prof. changed to Forgery kit ? no no no no Every Background has no other option for Tool Prof. . Sailor Monks, Guide Rangers, Fighter + Barbarian Farmer,... Every time i will see this i will ask my self: "Did the realy want to play that? Or are the just going with the rules?"
Gotcha. In some off camera discussions with the evil producers we sometimes wonder how much real play testing went into the new rules. Thanks for your comment!
Good stuff guys. I also feel very pigeon-holed into doing something they wanted me to do. It feels dumbed down.
Thanks! With my beloved newbies i just opted for letting them pick their own origin feats, skills and a.s.i.'s , it's worked perfectly fine so far
That's the beauty about TTRPGs, don't like something in the books, talk to your DM and change it to something you like.
I've been playing TTRPGs for 40 odd years, and like you I'd never played D&D where a background was a thing. However, since I've been playing 5e, I kind of like the backgrounds. When making a character I don't usually go with the "Standard/expected" background for a class. I like to mix and match so it adds more to the characters backstory and gives more flavour. A couple of examples. I have a Warlock who has the archaeologist background. It led to him finding an ancient tome that was the conduit to his GOO patron. He opened the book and after reading it his mind was transported to the edge of the universe. Okay, so he's slightly worse for wear from seeing what he did, and a little on the crazy scale, but what Warlock isn't a tad crazy for making a pact with a powerful entity?!? I have another character that is a rogue, whose background is acolyte. He couldn't keep his sticky fingers from dipping into the collection box, and was always tempted by the sins of gambling and misdirection. He left his order and became a full time rogue, but still donates some of his ill gotten gains to his old order. The backgrounds are there to make more rounded characters instead of looking to optimise the character to its absolute best. Now there's nothing wrong with doing that either, I've had plenty of 5e characters that I've done that with. I just thing there's more to the game than min/maxing. I haven't read 5e24 yet, so I can't comment on the new recommendations (I don't like the word rules for RPGs as they are all optional) but once I do, I'll have more of an insight as to whether I'll use them at my table or not.
Thank you for sharing that with us. My issue is that backgrounds now have much more "mechanical' effect on your character with the stat increments and origin feat and to me it feels like instead of pidgeon holing races/species to a class, now its the background that gets bundled. Let us know how it goes for you with 2024 and reading about your archeologist warlock has made me want to watch the evil dead again haha
@@MiddleAgedBarbarians The beauty about all TTRPGs is if you don't like the ruling in the book, change it, or don't use it. As long as your DM is good with it... :D
Sammy Hotsteppa🔥 and Thadeu the Bold 🌞, beautiful names for beautiful characters we need to play them and make a great story dude!
So we tried something very different with this episode's format, the audio gets buggy at times, apologies and thanks for your patience!
How do you manage the stealth then? Magic. Bat magic
Love the gnolls, would like more of the gnolls lore and like possiblites of playing a gnoll in a dnd campaign, or what if a gnoll is independent, doing bounty hunting or merecnary work, not being dangerous. Or learning the common tounge
I miss the monster template system that had level adjustment for making a monster race character class.. maybe in the upcoming MM they'll include an option. Also with the (probable) changes to the deities like with Gruumsh maybe they'll add some things for yeenoghu 🤞🏻
From my perspective D&D and maybe the DM´s have focused more on the background/lore of the characters and worlds, leaving aside the general settings of the game, I want to play and adventure that gives me the same effect that I got from playing Silent Hill the first time in my room alone, I mean If you name it like Book of Vile Darkness, you have to make it realy scary.
As a big fan of the SH series (at least the first three) i cant only dream of having the narrative skill of immersing my players the way sh1 does, even with the jagged pixels jajaja
A doody?!
Inset Beavis laugh
I love your reviews on the classes! Thanks for your comprehensive analysis!
Hey Zack, thanks for the feedback, we really appreciate it! Soon we'll be publishing a video about the origin of "the bard" it was really fun to look into!
CYOA are a big drama in Intellectual Property drama. There are books but you can't use the name and the owners of the name are still publishing but not under Packard
I went and verified.. the TSR novels where published as "Endless Quest", i fondly remember having 2 "castle of the undead" and "dungeon of fear"... I probably still have them on my bookshelf 😄
Ironicaly I do remember seeing the show and i was younger 🤷🏻♂️
I envy that a bit, i guess growing up in the usa, it was before my time 🤷🏻
I think a lot of the mechanics are really good - but you’re right - there needs to be some type of permanent decisions, rather than you changing everything in a whim. But I’m very excited for weapon masteries, new spells, and seeing the new artwork.
We here are waiting semi-impatiently to get our copy and see what final cut actually looks like!
While I enjoy modern take on dnd more, I think they should have OSR-style more grounded spin-off branch of dnd at least for variety sake. Some people will get tired of power fantasy eventually and will convert from casual to hardcore players, so there would always be a market for that.
Yea it’s for us lol
it's for 'everyone', which excludes us.
Hey @Bondanalloy i can understand the sentiment especially with their recent track record and as the consumers we have the final say in where we put our money... I dream of going back to fourth but sadly my playing group differs 😅😞
Man fuck wotc🎉
Time to show some love to third party developers!
That arrow shot was against a warlord on the steppe and a natural 18 or higher! And Edi applied all the penalties to the shot
Hey Dan, im gonna put a pin in your comment and wait for eddy to come by hahaha im sure it definitely wasn't a broken 2ed moment 🤣
@@MiddleAgedBarbarians It was third but the adventure did warn the DM about archer and mounted combatants breaking it...
Hope your DM will come by shortly and sort this mess out hahaha
The way I see, they have made the non-humans as just reskined human
Races seem to have almost become cosmetics
The changes are for people who hate any type of restrictions.
The way I usually DM is by having notes about the desires and motivations of the npcs and things they won't budge on. That way there's although room to improvise incase someone does something I didn't think of
That's a really good idea!
I'm not alone in thinking that the art direction for the new D&D edition is hot garbage. I feel like I fell asleep in 1988 and am having a nightmare where the "satanic panic" not only took over TSR and fully infiltrated its creative team, but also remade D&D in their image. Then to complete D&D's rebirth, they spewed toxicity at their existing fans in order to push them away and make room for their preferred new type of fan.
I'm very curious to follow and see if anything comes from Kuntzs' "counter-attack" on WotC.. in the meantime we shall be inspired by the twerking bards! 🤣
The attack on past fans, to cater to a new fan base is becoming more and more prevailant.
Put a chick in it and make her gay
Like the artwork for the crystal cave reboot
@@ZombDad Horrific IP
Warhammer has the best orcs. They’re big green and nasty
I wonder what Gruumsh thinks about all this haha
@@MiddleAgedBarbarianshe’s stomp on the goucho orcs for sure 😂
It's for players that like being overpowered. That seems to be their business structure, entice players by making their characters more powerful.
Let's just hope that they do the same with the monster manual 😂
@@MiddleAgedBarbarians They won't! But they will say that will!
I personally think ranger isn't any better with this change. They've based the entire class around a level 1 spell that doesn't scale until extremely late into the game. It's 1d6 you spend a BA and concentration on. They could have done a lot more imo
I've always picked fighter before ranger so i don't have to much personal xp playing the 2014 version, but one of current players has been enjoying the class and he is always burning slots with Hunters Mark...
Granted it's a low level campaign. Maybe they will update the spell in some way. What change would you have liked to see?
@@MiddleAgedBarbarians Ranger has always been one of my favorites. Not the 5e or 5.5e versions, of course, but just the theme. I'd love to see the concentration dropped at around 5th level. It'd do a lot to make the class feel better. Being able to upcast the mark for additional damage would also be nice. Most of all though, I'd like to see more unique features that aren't copy-pasted from other classes. Expertise, swimming, and climbing are all things rogue can do already, you know? There is always the problem of a ranger being too long distance and trivializing encounters because of it, but that's a problem with the class without QOL features added.
you can definately see the progression in the overly sensative culture. where no Races have an incletnation for evil anymore and there are a bunch of people in wheelchairs in the art. because in a world where a healer is around every corner someone would choose to enter a haunted tomb in a wheelchair
I had originally thought the character in the wheelchair was an artificer (sad they wont be in the core book) it actually seems to be a cleric, and why one would choose a wheelchair over a war forged type prosthetic is beyond me, but to each their own i guess
OK, now I have a new book tittle to look for. Never heard before about Dying Earth! And the Dungeon Meshi's part made me smile. A setting like that would be really cool for a D&D campaign!
Let us know what you think about the book! I'm kinda sad the first season of Dungeon Meshi is over. There is a book/setting recommended to me if you are interested in doing something more cooking oriented called Heliana's Guide to Monster Hunting, it has some cool options in it
Sorry for the re-upload, had an anomaly at the end of the episode. No worries, the llamas responsible for editing have been sacked 😂
I love this new format, more podcasty!
Thank you, it's been a fun process trying different spaces and ideas. Glad you like it!
for a little tip, the paladin smite is complete and utter garbage all the would have to do, was change it to once per round. the way it is presented, if you use it a) it can be countered, b) can't be used when silenced, c) can't be used vs monsters that have magic immunity you also have to use your bonus action to use it, so no PAM attack, GWM Attack when using your single smite => you loose dps when you smite with such a setup until you use at least a lvl 3 spell slot they try to mask this bs with waving a carrot before you with the "free" find steed, which is useless in 95%+ of any campaign the single bonus smite you get is useless, since you loose damage when you even use it the robbed any kind of versatility of the paladin and top it off, aura of protection is now level 7, ... so paladin is now about D-tier ( a niche build might be useable in same rare cases )
A weaker paladín doesn't bother me tbh, I'm still curious to read the final printed version. I have read the moans and lamentations from the pally fans though. Might I recommend the Path of the World Tree barbarian? Lol
You can follow us on Instagram and Twitter at @mabarbarians for other content and updates! Thanks for watching
Battlemaster subclass looks VEEERY interesting, can't wait to try it out with the weapon specializations
Yeah fighter and paladin are both looking really good (even with the smite being dispelled debacle)
