For those that don't know what a split bushing is
This is the kind of split bushing I used in my previous video.

My old miller gets a boost of life. Be kind with your comments, my redneck was on overdrive. Enjoy.

    I have a Miller roughneck 1e I’m wanting to do an engine swap too. Mine has the old kohler k301. With that being said since it is an older machine is has points, my question is did yours have points and if so what did you do for the points for the newer engine?

    • @clintr485
      @clintr485 6 місяців тому

      @spurndirty9546 Nothing. You can eliminate the coil power wire because the new engine uses a magneto for spark.

    I have a roughneck 1e I’ve been wanting to do this to. Did you have to rewire anything on the welder it self? Any tips would help. God bless

    I know this video is from a while back. I wish I had seen this way back. I am curious why you did not machine the outside of the taper bushing (maybe use flange-les bushing) to match Kohler crank instead and then put a spacer or collar behind bushing on crank and then use the center drawbolt to suck onto motor. I have a 1E that I took apart a few years back now burns too much oil and want to go predator route. Does generator function work ok at 1800 RPM with lessor HP predator? How much did you have to cut off Predator crankshaft? Side Note I :machined (with grinder saw on UA-cam) a predator output shaft to fit/match tapered 7/8 shaft on single cylinder 9HP Briggs on hobart 140 welder couple years ago so much better machine now.

      From an industrial store called Bearing Belt and Chain. Grainger will also carry it as well just about any industrial supply house.

    That's what we call a taper lock or QD bushing. A split taper bushing has a solid flange.

    • @clintr485

      You need to remove the generator rotor with the engine. There is a long bolt that goes through the rotor and threads into the pto sub shaft. There are many videos on here showing how to remove generator rotors. The rotor and stub shaft are both tapered. As I recall the rotor end is also threaded so you will need a bolt of that diameter and thread pitch and a measured length of s steel rod to drop into the hollow rotor shaft which the bolt then pushes against to"pop" the rotor off.

    If you were in az I’d go to you for advice in person but I have a Miller 200le aead I basically rescued from the scrap yard and don’t want to let it go so I plan on repowering it. It had an onan ccka 16 hp engine. Would you happen to know what engine would fit directly?

      @@clintr485 I broke the plate thing by being impatient and I believe so but my budget is very limited and the rebuild cost is more than a used 16 hp engine

    • @clintr485
      @clintr485 2 роки тому

      @@jackmioff000 the problem is there is no direct replacement engine. Your engine as a very special PTO side it is tapered whereas any replacement engine you buy over-the-counter is going to have a straight PTO shaft therefore had to make that adapter assembly and have the plate machined.

      Update: i made a connecting plate to use a 14hp kohler ch440 from my welder that shorted its windings last week, and im going to make a bell housing adapter and tweak the carb and other things to gain a couple more hp out of the kohler. Keep in mind i only have grinder and a torch and basic welding tools lol will make a video

    I came across this while searching for parts my miller 2E the engine is fine , I need a coil but instead of buying one I'm going to swap the engine and it seems Honda sells one for 2,280.00 not cheap but not overly expensive either. It should be worth 5kplus with a new engine

    Hey clint I have done the same swap but with a Miller roughneck 1e and the same predator engine. my adapter plate i used a 1" disc and had the holes machined out of it and also made the cone with double sided keyway for output shaft. But clint, How did you adapt the throttle controls to rev up the engine when you start welding?

    • @clintr485
      @clintr485 5 років тому

      Unfortunately I have not figured out a way to add the automatic throttle controls. For my application it doesn't matter because I use a so infrequently that I do not mind manually operating the throttle

    • @clintr485
      @clintr485 5 років тому

      the other thing that you might have noticed is the predator engine rotates in the opposite direction but of course it doesn't necessarily matter because it's an AC generator

    I would have rebuilt the Kohler unless the block was cracked or the crank was bad. You traded down in engine quality twice and expended a lot of time/energy to do it.

    • @clintr485
      @clintr485 6 років тому

      zombieresponder Kohler had been overhauled twice in Its life. Rod went through the block after the oiling spoon broke off the cap. I disagree about trading down though. Both the V-twin Briggs that was the first replacement and this one are overhead valve. More efficient design. Though I do see the point you are making.
