Shedcrafter
Приєднався 9 чер 2020
Shedcrafter was a lockdown project that turned into something I really enjoyed. As those of you who know me from BBC's Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm and Wartime Farm, you'll know that I'm passionate about traditional crafts, heritage crafts, rural crafts, hedgerow crafts, greenwood-working, and historic farming. But I am, by training, an archaeologist, with expertise in landscape archaeology, experimental archaeology and the medieval period more widely. In the past, I have run small farming enterprises, managed by own small-holding, been a beekeeper, kept chickens and have been a proponent of sustainable living, sustainability, and an eco-friendly lifestyle. It is my firm belief that the past has much to teach us about how our future could be. There were once extremely intelligent ways of doing things in the past, working from natural materials, sustainably sourced from the world around us. Let's see what we can learn about these 'primitive' technologies for a better future. #cræft
How to make a basket: Trailer
Welcome to my #lockdownproject! Over twelve episodes amounting to 2:30 hrs, I'll show you how to take locally sourced raw materials and turn them in to a rough and ready traditional coil basket. I'll take you through every step of the process from the splitting, pithing and stropping of bramble cane to the combing and preparing of grass materials for stitching and binding in to a robust working basket.

Thanks! I’ve got a meadow with abundant bluestem and broomsedge, thought I’d give it a try.
How long is it to make only one basket? A week ? Is it worth all this work ? You can take a cardboard box, punch two holes in it, put some rope, and voilà !
He is not hard on the eyes...
So glad I found this channel; it’s like running into an old friend. Love all your prior work. This video came up in my feed as I was trying to learn to make something useful out of the wisteria vines I’m trying to eradicate in my yard. You made my day! Can’t wait to watch more!
This is amazing!! I watched all the BBC farm series multiple times and just stumbled across your channel when I was looking for some good basket tutorials. I’m so excited to binge all your videos!! You’re so good at explaining things!! Thanks for making all these!!
I will have to try this out! we have lots of these bushes around here! It looks alot like Bamboo cane once it's had its pith removed.
Wonder if he’s single.lol
I’d like to move there. 4:15
Alex so lovely to see you on camera again..
Book?
Tools. What/where knives?
What a super program , and I have massive shed envy
The music ruined the whole video, wanted to learn something but had to listen to music.
Beautiful. So well done. Agreed, it is awful, that grassland habitats are removed at the speed which they are. Grass is one of the most basic foods for so many animals. This video is a treasure. I've made baskets with pine needles but had not thought of straw. Awesome. I can't wait. I had no idea it has such longevity.
At what time of the year shall I harvest bramble for basket making?
Why have I only just found this brilliant channel?
This is such a good video - thank you - I wondered what kind of tool is that you are using to split the cane?
Beautiful language and craft, sir. Thank you.
Amazing, I found this video just after I'd checked out an audiobook from the library about traditional crafts (Cræft). Written by..... Alexander Langlands! The writing in the book reminded enough of the narration in this video that I googled the author and it led me right back to this video 😊 great work both on screen and in your books. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Mr. Langlands!
Thanks for telling us about the book! Just ordered a copy!
Great videos, I got so into watching one after the other I forgot to click the 'like' for them,😂 which I think a lot of people did because they were just so interesting. Thanks so much for posting these from southern New Zealand 👍🥰 tremendous stuff 🥰 ( I did go back and click like by the way 🤦)
Very nice. Very educational and well produced. Thanks.
This is great. Please make it convenient for your viewers by creating a playlist.
Great video. Please, who provided the beautiful music?
Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Sylvester Stallone?
🤙👍
Great video 👍
Thanks! This is a nice meditative activity!
Oh! This is a parallel to making a basket from PINE NEEDLES! I have a LONG LEAF PINE in my yard.
Alex I love your channel and I'm looking to learn more on traditional craftsmanship that is relevant to modern life especially when it comes to self sufficiency and sustainability. I hope you come back to UA-cam to share your knowledge and skills as you do it so well. I would be more than happy to collaborate with you as embark on a quest to learn coppicing and all woodland crafts that revolve around it. All the very best for the new year. cheers J
Good teachings, but modern man will Just watch it! It’s too much time dedicated to sling the splints❤ You’re the best!
Beautiful videos!
Great! Thanks! In church embroidery we used a tool like that was called a stiletto and we couldn't buy new ones but we had antiques with mother-of-pearl handles.
How long do you soak it please
Brilliant love it enjoy
GOOD WORK MAN❤🎉

You are good in what you are
I am delighted to have found this channel. I frequently watch the farm series' and hoped for new content. And here you are. Looking forward to your future endeavors. Thank you.
I loved watching your video series and really enjoyed your passion an enthusiasm in making these natural baskets. Thank you very much for this!
Thank you for taking the time to teach us out here what to do. I enjoy hearing your accent.
What music is this??
He is making hard work of a simple split ,keep trying
1:00 looks like my granny's ice pick. 💖🌞🌵😷
I know nothing about making bone tools, but if you don't have any luck with carving cooked bone. Try raw bone. ... Here's my thinking. "They" say never feed cooked poultry bones to dogs because it shatters into slivers. ... But people who feed a raw diet say raw bones don't shatter. Then cook your bone to harden. Let me know what you experience. 💖🌞🌵😷ç
I came for the basket making and now I want roast turkey....
There is a youtube telling about beehive making with split brambles. They use a splitter made out of a pice of wood splits is 4 at once
The splitter is three nosed, at least the ones we use are and there is an easy way of clearing the thorns ,still it setts the scene for some people .
Loved this series, thank you!!
Please post your Book. 🙋♀️
I kept wanting you to turn the work see we could see what you are looking at. Never did. Now my neck is sore.
I already have have a hoarding problem-- i shouldnt be hoarding bramble too
