Road Event Cheater- Frosthaven 3 Difficulty
That was rough. You going to replay and try again? That +2 didn’t seem to scale well.
@@MarcusAZ2022 I want to beat it… maybe. Open information is also hurting as without it we would be lvls 5-4-3 so average of 4 divided by 2 is only monster lvl 2. Probably too much difficulty increase without access to better items. If I were fully loaded out with 3 herb potions and good armor on fist I bet it would be doable
Yeah, splitting up the party is always rough on high difficulty because you lose the interactions and synergies that good players take advantage of. And shrike fiends gonna shrike. It's gonna be a rough one for sure...good luck on the next attempt.
Blinkblade can also solo a Fiend if you use a bunch of potions turn one. Fist *might* be able to go toe to toe with a Fiend, just by tanking/retaliating until you brittle/bash?
@@johnpeterson3386 yeah I think fiat can pretty reliably tank them. They rarely move away so can heal 3 every turn and icy uppercut with heavy sword gives me attack 7 to brittle. Still would take like 5 turns but possible.
best video title ever
Normal Shrike Fiends are manageable, but Elites are just awful. "Boneshaper is the reason I lost this scenario" can be said about a surprising number of levels. When she's bad, she's worse than useless. I'd enhance Quenched Rage top to push 4, get a Swiftness potion, and try again. Meteor can solo a Shrike Fiend (generally) if you do a big 21 point push on turn one, which also creates obstacles and forces him to move through hazards to reach you. I've beaten this scenario a few times, and it always involves a big turn-one nova, burning tons of resources to get through the first section quickly. Good luck!
@@johnpeterson3386 I attempted it again with everything as I have it currently and it went better (but still not well), boneshaper got out 3 skeles on turn 2 and shrike fiends gave me their nothing special rather than an aoe and bone won its side pretty quickly. First room went really well on both sides but second was a mess and fist and bone finished with 3 and 4 cards each. They tried to take on the top room with an exploding corpse loss coming out to kill 3 of the 4 snow imps, but it just wasn’t enough. Meteor had 6 cards and tried to solo the bottom room but attack with poison and brittle from snow imps very quickly did him in.
yeahh not only are shrike fiends perhaps the most annoying enemy in frosthaven, this scenario specifically took my group like 3-4 tries on normal difficulty. I think even on our last try we still lost by like 3 health so we just called it a win. Definitely one that I'd never be excited to play again. I think its an especially tough scenario for boneshaper with how the initial rooms are set up, especially if you're playing with only 3 characters and bone is on their own.
@@vslimes I just don’t understand why all their scary cards are fast and they’re bad cards slow. Move + 0 attack +0 at 90 and move -1 attack +0 2 targets range 5 at speed 10??? I figured bone by itself made the most sense as they have 2 cards to make things suffer 2 which skeles can survive 1 but not 2, but it didn’t come close to working out
lol i feel your pain. also, thanks for continuing to post this content!
I was so excited to play Boneshaper again and it's disappointing me :(. Doesn't actually fit super well in my team comp and for some reason every level I've been playing has been horrible for her
Don’t forget to draw loot cards as you go on scenarios that have Random Items! You never know when you draw something useful that can be used during the scenario! Not like you don’t have enough to keep track of playing 3 hand solo 😂
After Eruption, wouldn't the ruined machines focus the wraith instead of walking through the lava?
@@Bollehenk1337 yup
You should probably re-read Encased Punch, it doesn't do what you keep saying it does
@@bryanb2632 yeah I realized in the 3rd room it wasn’t fury of the mountain and made myself take some damage to compensate
Damn not taking the other level 3 for the bottom persistent is... interesting?
@@MarekPaarek putrid cloud right? It sounds good but idk something about it just has never clicked with me
@@ucgxanathos2171 it's basically a failsafe such as that even when you can't get going and your skellys keep on dying they're still doing something.
I would call that 80 damage attack a Falcon Punch. That was awesome.
@@MarcusAZ2022 and only took like 13 turns to set up!
I totally agree with the thick skinned ruling you made. Didn’t even consider that workaround but definitely saves good stamina for Fist
Also you are right Lord of Chaos isn’t immune to poison, at least per the physical version.
@@vslimes it’s funny how Frosthaven despite being a game with hundreds of pages of rules, at times it almost feels like a DnD campaign where a good argument can sway things in your favor
Boneshaper sucks so hard xD
@@juanjesustorressalcedo780 in some cases I definitely agree. Generally bad with movement and burst outside of a couple losses. It can be very snowbally and is missing key items right now
@@ucgxanathos2171 Potential spoiler: There's an item, I think it might be a random one, that says discard 2 cards to heal yourself 6 hp that's just perfect for a Boneshaper. You can have 4 summons out turn 1 by level 6. 1 from your perk, then the level 6 card, then you discard 2 to heal it off, which gives you a thing into your discard pile that you can then summon with the bottom of the level 3 card. Bonus points if you use a strategist ring to then bring out the level 9 summon to give all those skellys an extra hp.
@ I believe that item is from a road event but I could be wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten it but it definitely feels make for boneshaper
It’s been fun watching the Boneshaper play. I loved my Boneshaper, but went with the single summon build where you get the big guy at level 2 and keep him alive the whole time, so it’s been fun seeing a more traditional swarm build.
@@MarcusAZ2022 I just love how thematic it feels to be suffering damage to resummon the dead and going “digging” through your discard to replay them. It works conceptually and can be really strong most scenarios
"you cannot use soldiers on this attack." Oops! It's a lousy event anyways :D
@@johnpeterson3386 reading is for suckers! Motto of my life
I could be wrong but early in the scenario you drew a +2 create ice AMD on Fist that you never placed on the same turn you made the hazardous terrain near the second door you opened. Probably could’ve helped both with killing and opening the door as well as getting the pyro an extra move into the room. Otherwise great stuff, I watch these vids every morning when u upload.
@@vslimes thanks! I always enjoy hearing from people who love this game as much as I do! You’re definitely right about the icy AMD that would have been nice
agreed
I decided some time ago that blesses *just aren't that great.* In fact I think they are greatly over-costed. They are nice to have, but just way too unreliable in effect. Curses are slightly better, IF you can get them out early. But still unreliable.
@@johnpeterson3386 I definitely agree with you that just a couple random blesses added in aren’t amazing. I do think you can build a character specifically around blesses though. Unfortunately looking through the frosthaven classes no one really sticks out to me and being great for it except lvl 9 infuser. In general blesses scale really well as characters get stronger since you get more attacks per round, higher base damages, and a thinner AMD generally. Curses I really like. A good point of evidence for you is I HATE when monsters curse me, but when priests draw their “bless self” card I’m always happy to see it.
Nice to draw like that every now and again. I've certainly seen you pull misses on crucial moments a lot before, so good to see it go the other way.
fyi, for Quenched Rage top, you double the suffered dmg for each haz tile "moved through", which means entered and exited. So you don't get the bonus dmg for a haz tile they entered and stayed.
@@johnhepp ahh so 15 max damage not 18. Still pretty good
The strength of Frozen Over lies in the Ward.
I find this scenario to be unfairly difficult....unless you have either Trap or Meteor. Which makes it much more tenable. Boneshaper is weak in quite a few scenarios, including this one.
between meteor and snowflake what is better? i rlly like play snowflake
@@juanjesustorressalcedo780 I want to say Snowflake but it’s probably Meteor. I’ve only played about 10 scenarios total with Meteor so it’s hard to say. I love doing big aoe losses with Snowball on Snowflake but meteor can make terrain significantly easier and more often but together they’re super op
Return to the Source top rider effect happens AFTER the attack. So it effects later attacks.
I found Searing Smoke to be much better at level 2. You really need that move 4 jump. At very high levels you don't need it any more. Living Magma bottom is better than the top, and of course you enhance it.
@@johnpeterson3386 I can see why move 4 jump would be the choice to make it easier to position for pushes and such but I’m super interested in trying the double double brittle huge attack into a boss. I may try enhancing jump onto lava bomb or liquid stone instead
I got a lot of good use out of deep fury, kinda missed a move 4 jump early on but there's other answers to that and your cards sort out your movement around level 5-6. It's a pretty big boon to a haz build to get a top push that let's you more comfortably use the bottom of your level 1 push attack (which is awesome)
@@jeremyfrentz9506 that was what I was thinking. Also the heal 2 is a really nice addition to the card as just an added benefit
Quenched Rage and Melted Armor work well with Magma Orbs, but the Rain of Fire build is generally much better.
I played Meteor to level 9 and used Quenched Rage in almost every scenario. Igneous Path + Swiftness potion + Burst Boots was my big play for 18 damage AND a bunch of obstacles. I also brought Infusion potion because Earth isn't super easy to make. If you have Snowdancer to give you +2 move and jump on Igneous Path, things get crazy. Snowdancer + Meteor is insane.
@@johnpeterson3386 it’s also insane to me that both igneous path and birds in a tempest are 18
How is Frosthaven Enhanced now? Any QoL improvements since your initial review?
@@gideonpepys a couple. I don’t remember everything but they improved the AMD section on character board. I know they’re working on having the initiative tracker do the math on monster cards but it’s not in yet. I ended up buying a better computer so I can run it decently well. Overall I still prefer the QoL of assisted frosthaven but this one is generally better when it comes to setting scenarios up correctly and not having things glitch out. This one is easier to make videos for since I don’t have to use 2 screens and crop things out.
@@ucgxanathos2171 Thanks. Might be worth waiting a while to switch then.
Here are my thoughts on Meteor. They are only based on playing the 7 community campaign levels so far, so it's pretty limited. Playing solo with shackles. My level up choices came from a guide I found online, as well as the nicknames of the builds. I chose to do the Falcon Punch build (Butcher) instead of the Hazardous Terrain build (Arsonist). Butcher is fun, but really took a bit to spin up. The first couple turns feel like dead turns, similar to drifter. Play Quenched rage bottom and lava bomb top. Then Metamorphic Rock Bottom with Liquid Stone top. Then turn 3 is your big attack with Melted Armor bottom and Under Pressure top (this is at level 2). Gives you a nice attack for 12 on turn 3, but takes some set up. Then the build really shifts to a ranged style build at level 5 with Magma orbs, where you can get off your 2X attack on turn 2 instead (as long as you set up your elements. Honestly, the first few levels were rough. Being only in melee range with weak attacks, very little self heal (but Fist and BS might be able to help with this), and no items was frustrating. But has quickly become super fun as I have leveled up, and your AMD gets pretty crazy pretty quick. Level 5 really made it fun with the attack 3 - 3 targets range 3. After watching you play your campaigns (specifically how you played Snowflake), the Arsonist (haz terrain) build is probably more effective. I can totally see you putting together some crazy push/pull through hazards turns to blow stuff up. Your planning and 3-handed teamwork would probably make this class work really well. BUT your boneshaper might really struggle navigating the haz until you get the 3 check perk that lets your allies ignore haz damage (would probably be required to make a traditional skeleton swarm BS work). Your wraith could do some chip damage early on, but your skeletons would really get blocked off and stuck in choke points. They would basically just be tanks and not DPS at that point. Either way, I am really looking forward to seeing you play this character. I am also excited to see you play Shackles again someday now that I have experience with that class as well.
@@MarcusAZ2022 thanks for the write up. I’ll probably just save “falcon punch” for boss fights cause it sounds really fun to try a few times. How exactly does the 2x damage work? Do you get to pick where to put it in in the damage formula anywhere before modifier? So like (attack 5 + heavy sword + poison)x2= attack 14 + modifier?
@@ucgxanathos2171 Honestly, I am not sure. I had never even thought about that until you brought it up. I think I was adding the modifier and then doubling, but I don’t know the official rule. Additional caveat - I am not that good. I play at normal difficulty and tend to do a lot of retcons, but a lot of that is due to not having much time to play. So take my advice with a grain of salt, I only have 30ish FH and a JOTL campaign under my belt, not thousands of hours 😂
@@MarcusAZ2022 I mean just look at me, 1000s of hours doesn’t mean I know the rules either!
I believe the general rule is that you choose the order of modifiers. So put that x2 at the end unless you have an obscure reason not to.
It's in page 25 of the rulebook (just went and looked it up) in the first step of calculation, players choice for order between all effects directly modifying the attack value (poison, card effects, heavy sword ect) done before applying amd.
Would love to see this scenario attempted again, seems super cool. I wonder if it’s worth prioritizing keeping your Allies alive, seems like they can do a decent amount if they aren’t stuck and have to go all the way around the cores. Maybe some healing thrown their way would help them absorb some more damage and put out some more DPS. But it felt like BS was kind of useless in this one.
Havent watched the whole thing but 2 quick things. 1. When there is a tie in initiative between characters and monsters, characters always go first, so T1 fist had to go before the guards. 2. For the dancing slippers, when you prevent the damage you dont actually suffer it, so you cant activate them. Not sure if its in the FAQ but I found bgg threads with dwarf confirming that so I accept that ;) Makes sense though, in the same way you can save ticks of agony of others from shackles for example.
I got absolutely blasted three times on this scenario playing with Blinkblade and Deathwalker at low level on hard. I had to switch to normal and add Fist in to help tank and still barely squeaked by. Honestly felt like I just didn't have the tools to handle the area when I tried this mission. I still need better items.
Also don’t underestimate the bottom of the level 4 fist card. You can move, immobilize and THEN attack with push, effectively stunning all adjacent enemies Also also if you wanna be enhancing the leaf on the level 2 card you might as well spare the brainpower and stop thinking about not playing one with the mountain :D
@@MarekPaarek yeah I found that combo in the next scenario (although I’m not sure I get got it to come through for me). I actually ended up recording 4 videos that day which has been good cause I haven’t had time the past couple days
I heard fist and meteor is fun.
That's just a slap in the face to have the ranged drifter unlock the enhancer :D
what a roller coaster ride lol
@@benseasly4139 I just don’t understand why I didn’t adapt to the living bones getting their “hit one target with all attacks.” Definitely not worth fist’s life to get a singular trap sprung
At min 30 you just unleashed hell on that Boss. What an epic set of draws . Imagine fighting a monster like that, they think they're gonna win the battle of attrition, then your guys just go super saiyan on him.
This whole quest chain feels absolutely shocking. I swear 3 of the 4 scenarios in the chain are atrocious at anything other than 4p, unless you have very specific characters. Eg. The second scenario in the chain (collecting 4 goal tiles and bringing them back to the central room) as 2p with a Coral and a Deathwalker was aweful...for the Deathwalker player. For me, as Coral, it was a lot of fun. Deathwalker opened the first door and got knocked down to 1 hp (demon drew a x2) and only healing they had access to was long rests and restful slippers(? initiative after 60 heal 1). So they did all the walking around (teleporting back to the main room) while my Coral fought all the enemies (thankfully mostly melee enemies who did stuff all damage to Coral, due to shields, and took retaliate damage every time they attacked Coral). Can't see us being able to win with a squishier class or a class that couldn't teleport back to the main room.
@@septimustavi9352 agreed the middle two are both horrible in 2 player. A lot of the 2/3/4 player balancing feels really lazy with objectives not changing and only difference for summoned monsters being whether they’re normal or elite
I vote to give yourself the checkmarks. You are playing 3 handed and could have accomplished the BG easily if you weren’t juggling so much.
I know you said you like the curse BS build, but would love to see the poison/tank build that is unlocked with the level 3 card Putrid Cloud if that ends up fitting the party. I think it’s part of Gripeway’s BS guide.
@@MarcusAZ2022 between the 2 level 4 cards I definitely prefer Flesh Shield. Needed initiative and the shielding can be clutch. Critical Failure seems pretty useless to me until you have a boneball with a base attack 8, but even then you need a party adding tons of extra curses and muddles to get max value out of it. I’ve never been someone who follows guides or metas. It’s always been something that holds me back, for example when I was young I played tons of Chess tournaments. Nowadays I’m 1400 on chess.com so objectively pretty awful but I never get better because I refuse to study openings. I love solving puzzles and studying a position after a loss to see what could have been better but something about “learning the meta” just doesn’t interest me even though I know that would objectively be the best way to improve.
I will miss you, Jerry 🫡 Well... only cause you got a name.
If the scenario was not silly enough - reminder that chaos demons have the innate muddle on each attack.
Bummer of a loss, I wonder what would have happened if fist hadn’t lost 4 cards in one turn. Thanks for uploading even though it was a loss, I still enjoyed watching!
Was there ever a chance for fist to get a good use of dancing slippers?
@@dallintalbot539 definitely could have saved 2 cards when the chaos demons got their 1 speed and in the end maybe that would have resulted in another heal or 2 going into the top pillar
Hey this is the scenario I'm trying to do with Bannerspear and Fist...its hard at 2p. How do you get the quick conditions application thingy to pop-up?
@@septimustavi9352 this does seem to be one of the worst balanced scenarios for fewer than 4 characters. With 4 player every just stands next to a pillar and heals it with their bottom every turn but I don’t know how you’re supposed to spread the damage in 2p
@@ucgxanathos2171 Yeah, I've played this twice with 4p and its so easy. Meanwhile 2p is insanely difficult.
I honestly suggest to house rule it, play it at a very low level and try to move on or something similar. Unfortunately I dont have a low of good things to say about this quest line overall, seems to be overtuned compared to most of the other scenarios and with 0 thought given to 2player. Apologies for being salty ;)
@@Teofreyz it’s a shame because I love the idea of picking 4 of the 6 elements and that determining which demons spawn for this level, makes it cool to replay, but you really need some way to make it better for 2 or 3 player. Something like lower pillar HP but only C pillars must survive
or have the pillar health be inversely proportional to the player count (so 4p have the least amount of health per pillar and 2p has the most).
I've said it before and I'll say it again, water-build Coral utilizing ice hexes for easier moving around sounds super fun. Other than that I'd love to see you play the classes you missed and I would save Boneshaper until a little later, so that you can actually play it to lvl 9 with all the items and stuff, I doubt it would be much different this time around compared to the FHA playthrough.
Have you ever played scenario 30? War of the Spire B? That seems insanely difficult.
@@septimustavi9352 yes I have. It’s the hardest frosthaven level I’ve played imo, between than and 39 corrupted camp. Took me like 5 tries before I beat it the first time
I finally managed to do it...after 6 attempts I was finally successful on my 7th go. Did 4 attempts with Bannerspear and Geminate 3 normal difficulty (which didn't last past round 6) and 1 easy (got to round 10). Left it cos thats just a crazy scenario. Came back and tried 3 times with Bannerspear and Fist. 2 normal attempts didn't last past round 5. Easy attempt I finally managed to win and it was still close, Fist exhausted in round 10 and Bannerspear had like 3 cards left. Though I did completely forget about a banner I had played for nearly 2 whole rounds, and then realised I had played a different banner to the one I thought I had, but it worked out really well (2 shield on Bannerspear so long as its next to said banner is cool). I swear the only reason I was successful in this attempt was because, in round 5 (when the first new Snowspeaker spawns) Fist moved and attacked it for 5 with advantage (doing 5 damage), then attacked all adjacent enemies for 5 (included the snowpeaker and 2 archers) doing 5 to the snowspeaker (its dead) drawing a +2 on one archer (its dead) and a x2 on the other. 3 enemies dead, 2 of which always attack and 1 that does stuff that makes the scenario insanely hard, and some health recovery for the price of 2 burns sounds like a fair exchange to me.
Thanks for your review. How do you change the settings to increase the space between the cards in your hand like in your video? In my Frosthaven Enhanced they all stack into each other, so I can not read the full card.
@@unknowna23 if you press f8 the boxes the cards go into will show up and you can edit their sizes, however if you do so then you won’t be able to remove and reset character to fix your attack modifier deck between scenarios so I’ve just learned to live with the cards being stacked
