I'm passionate about rivers and I hope I can film them in such a way that other people can enjoy them through UA-cam
On this channel I hope to build up an archive of videos on everything to do with rivers from the beautiful to the ugly, from the biggest to the smallest, and anything else I can think of that interests me and maybe you.
If you want to see videos about anything river related, or have any river related questions, feel free to post a comment on the channel.

Shingle Street
This is a short video resulting from a trip to the Suffolk coast at Shingle Street, just north of Felixstowe, UK.
Besides the fascinating coastal geomorphology (the shingle ridges, the cuspate foreland and storm beach) it also has a long military use, and not far from shingle street are the remains of napoleonic and WWII battlements.
The growth and change of the coastal features can be traced back in time using historic maps, but the complex series of ridges can still be seen piled one against the other.
On my first attempt at putting it all together, the video felt far too happy and cheerful. So I scrapped it and started again.
This time I wanted to create something that captured its darker past - the WWII battlements and bombing ranges, and the dark storms that have helped to shape the landscape. At the same time I wanted to convey a light feeling - how it is today - a popular coastline for walking and bathing.
Here it is.....

DJI Phantom 4: five tips for making better videos with a drone
Переглядів 1,2 тис.8 років тому
I've had the DJI Phantom 4 for a few months, and after shooting video in all sorts of locations around England, I have learned very quickly what makes a good video, and what doesn't. So, I've decided to share 5 tips which I have found really improve my videos, and hopefully yours too - if you don't know them already. If you like these, I will do another 5 at later date. Lathkill Dale in Derbyshire - a short history
Переглядів 13 тис.8 років тому
This video is a short history of the beautiful Lathkill Dale in Derbyshire filmed with the DJI Phantom 4 and Smartphone. This valley is only a few miles long, but packed into this space there is a fascinating historic and environmental story to tell - and I try to show as much of it as I can in 10 minutes - although there is enough to do a short series on all of it! If you are interested in lea...
DJI Phantom 4 - The highest waterfall in England. Cautley Spout, Cumbria
Переглядів 1,2 тис.8 років тому
Depending on how you define the highest waterfall, (e,g. broken fall, unbroken, above ground, under ground etc.) Cautley Spout is the Highest ‘above-ground’ ‘broken’ waterfall in the England, cascading 198 meters off the top of a glacial valley, in the most spectacular and beautiful way. This Waterfall (or waterfalls) is accessible to the public at all times, and is about a mile from the road t...
The amazing waterfalls on the River Swale at Keld, North Yorkshire - With the DJI Phantom 4
Переглядів 6 тис.8 років тому
The highest concentration of waterfalls in England is on the River Swale at Keld in the North Yorkshire Dales where there are a dozen waterfalls within 1 mile of each other. Half of them are accessible to the public. In this short video I used a combination of the DJI Phantom 4 drone and a phone camera to capture most of these waterfalls from angles rarely, if ever, seen before. It was extremel...
DJI Phantom 4 - Filming aerial to underwater shots
Переглядів 3,3 тис.8 років тому
In this short video I experiment with the DJI Phantom 4 and a GoPro to see if I can get a smooth transition from aerial shots to underwater shots. Correction to Video at 1:42 I say the Drone is not stable close to the water surface - This statement is not correct. I have since done a lot more testing over water, and can confirm that the DJI phantom 4 is stable over still and moving water at all...
River Dove at Dovedale near Ilam in the Peak District. Filmed with the DJI Phantom 4
Переглядів 1,7 тис.8 років тому
The River Dove (originally pronounced to rhyme with 'rove' rather than 'love') flows about 45 miles from Buxton through the Peak District to Newton Solney on the River Trent, before flowing on further to the Humber and the North Sea. This video was filmed near the village of Ilam where the river cuts through a limestone valley at Dovedale, creating stunning scenery and rocky outcrops. A very po...
Low flying on the River Nene, Flore, Northamptonshire (with the DJI Phantom 4).
Переглядів 4658 років тому
I had a had an hour spare, and it stopped raining, so off to a local river where we used to swim as kids, to a place known locally known as the 'Iron Bridge' on the river 'Nen'. The church you can see in the distance is in Flore. We used to dive head-first off that bridge back in the day. It has had a bit of a re-make since then. Awful gabon baskets replace the bank on one side, but apart from ...
DJI phantom 4. River Restoration - Wolverton Floodplain Forest
Переглядів 2568 років тому
This is the River Great Ouse near Milton Keynes. The flood plain here has been transformed from grazing pasture to a something that we may have seen thousands of years ago - before humans modified the river. Following gravel extraction at the site, which you can still see is happening here, the area was sculpted into a series of interconnected channels and ponds, which over time will develop in...
Flyover with DJI Phantom 4 - New fish bypass channel at Stony Stratford
Переглядів 7418 років тому
In my second instalment, I have chosen to film at a river local to me using the DJI Phantom 4. In March 2016 a dry channel was reconnected with the river to allow fish to get around some sluice gates. 3 months later, it is looking very nice. DJI Phantom 4. First week - experimenting with camera angles.
Переглядів 1,5 тис.8 років тому
My first week with the DJI Phantom 4. Simple video with no sound. Experimenting with some different camera angles and flight paths over a canal lock. - Rotational shots were done with 'point of interest' flight setting - GPS mode was used at all times - Sensors active (you can see this in the approach shot to the lock gates, where the P4 adjusts itself mid flight. - Shot in 4k, but significantl...
Great place for a walk. Nice film.

Wow. What a place! We’re off here in the morning for a couple of nights. Will definitely check it out. Thanks for sharing.
Back in my school days mid 1960's our geograpphy teacher told us to try and borrow a miners helmet and we went on a school trip to the start of the river Lathkill and potholed a good way down the cave where the river starts in winter. then we walked down the valley and explored lead mines which I believe are now blocked off. No Elf and safety when we where at school! Good old Jet Harris our teacher.
During the gold session they were about to lay a railway to LD. Then they didn't. During WW2 a Wellington came down just North of the road bridge at its southern end.
Fine scenery and river .Think its limestone that makes the rock structure of the waterfalls. Always enjoy walking there
Enjoyed several works in this geologically interesting area. The little river has a good population of wild brown trout.Limestone streams are some of our richest river ecology . Fascinating industrial history
Per trout the Wye is well stocked through Monsal Dale.
Super video. I climbed it yesterday, awesome.
Commendable effort my friend. Good to see some people some where who care for nature lost in oblivion. Tonnes of love 💘 ❤️ ❤️ for Brittany.
Beautiful video Thank you for sharing take care!👍
Great info & video! :-)
Imagine how beautiful it would be without mans intervention to extract lead etc, it would be free flowing and not in ponds and with more water.
Great Video - we were there today. Why have you stopped publishing videos? do you have another channel?
Well done I went to Aber falls recently.
So, four years on from this video has it been possible to keep the river flowing year round?
We were there today and it was bone dry in places, still an amazing to see though in all seasons whether flowing or dry
Accomplished it well. Congratulations
I can recommend Wain Wath Force to anyone who has difficulty walking because it's a beautiful spot literally by the side of the road, a few hundred yards north west of Keld.
Loved this video. It's a shame you don't seem to be making videos any more.
try filming in 4k and do a digital zoom on an editing software. and fly it higher so you dont cause ripples in water
I really enjoyed the journey through the valley Rob. Your presentation did credit to the ecology, history and beauty of the place. I'm happy to have found your channel. All the best. Mark
That looks dramatic and spectacular. A visual and sensory experience no doubt with the nature and sounds all pervasive in the valley. Beautiful. I like to walk rivers hence the name of my channel. Mark
I'm surprised you haven't got more subs. A very interesting and well presented video. Also like your music choice.
Amazing to watch, well done
Thanks and some great ideas!
Are you still using the DJI Phantom 4 for filming? I ask because I bought one thinking I could recreate the sort of quality you are getting but its not the same at all. I wonder if you are doing much in post production? If you get a moment could you look at some footage I shot which is on You Tube. It's called Deben Melton low tide. I've tried playing around with the settings and put a PL filter on but not much change. Thanks for your time. Len
Great to see that your back! Well put together video!
Thanks. More to come this summer.
The bypass channel looks like it's always been full of water even though it hasn't. Thanks for posting this!
Great short film and nostalgic for me......as I fished the upper part by the fishing lodge (where we used to stay and appears now in private hands) many times as a child. The crystal, blue, aquarium like nature of the pools and weirs was an unforgettable experience.....and the trout were prolific then and tricky too! Your film is fairly recent and i can see that the course of the water and weirs are not as well maintained as they once were......I recall reading that the River had disappeared through a hole in the limestone strata for both water and fish were more abundant in my day (circa 1960). I have just returned from Fishing the Wye at Rowsley (this week) the Peacock Hotel is still wonderful....and the start of the season is full of promise......and i too made a film of it some years ago: (no drone!) vimeo.com/2464373
Great video with some excellent drone footage. It's been quite some time since I last visited Lathkill Dale. I must go back there soon. Subscribed!
Excellent advice for new drone pilots for filming video, I found you and glad I did, just got a P4 for xmas and now trying to learn how to make good videos using it, will definitely be using your tips. thanks. :-)
Fantastic thanks.
Wow, great job!!
awsome job wow very seemless
Went back there yesterday for the first time since school (30 years ago!) Never forgot how deep and clear the water was yet didn't know the location until I came across an image online. Special place and your video was really interesting now I've seen for myself lots of the places shown. Thanks.
Great video! As a fellow drone owner, I will say your tips are spot on! I would just add the importance of being extremely careful when getting those low angle shots and also flying backwards. I recently crashed my P4 into the ocean because I backed up into a cliff side (no obstacle avoidance). It was heartbreaking and only took a 2 seconds of poor judgment.
Very informative and intelligent tips, well done, keep it up. I have subscribed your channel.
Great video! Thanks!
can you tell me the best video/photo settings for the p4 camera
Good question. For the camera, I always tend to shoot RAW images and for the video - 4K. I then convert them to a lower resolution for editing - but I like to keep the original 4k videos just in case I need them at a later date. For video, I manually set the shutter speed to about 2x the frame rate, as it gives a nice motion affect. I then set the ISO as low as I can, while maintaining the shutter speed. You absolutely have to buy some Neutral Density filters if you want to do this. Use the EV (Exposure Value) value and try to get it as close to 0 as you can For camera, and video, I always put the histogram on the screen so I can see what my light levels are doing. There are also loads of other settings you can play with. Now if none of that made sense (which it may not) - I recommend this video by Tom's Tech Time where you can see on screen what he is talking about. It is amazing what a difference it makes when the setting are correct: ua-cam.com/video/my2cFiPKvao/v-deo.html
TheRiverChannel Thanks a lot buddy for your awesome reply. i had subscribed as well👍🍺. and fyi , that i have my own channel as well and if u would like u can subscribe as well. j
really interesting!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
To be fair the transition was pretty seamless, or at least as good as you can get it without getting your Phantom wet. Great job. I am also new to UA-cam and flying drones but it's great fun learning. :)
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Five great tips really enjoyed viewing.
Thanks :-)
good
Great editing Rob you deserve to have more than 21 subscribers.
Thank you. I've only just started out on UA-cam so it's really nice to hear you liked it.
Another great video Rob with a very interesting commentary.
Beautiful footage nice editing.
Great shots of the waterfalls have subbed to your channel hope you will take a look at my channel regards Keith.
Each video is better than the one before :) Ever thought of taking a look into Gaping Gill?
Thank you Twotter. Gaping Gill is on the list!
Excellent :)
Nice intro :) It would be interesting to see how you get on if you could mount the GoPro below the DJI.
Could try it. Might be a bit risky if it gets snagged on something though, and would have less control over camera angles. Would look much better than the transition I managed in this video though. Also, it would look more realistic with water on the lens as it comes out of the water, but it may obscure the view a little on the exit flyover. Swings and roundabouts.
