Martin County Fire Rescue Modified Flat Load for 5" Supply

This hose load and instructional video was developed by C-Shift at Station 30. The intention was to find a hose load for 5" supply line that deploys without being caught up in our newer engine's hose bed. It also allows you to see exactly how much hose is in the hose bed unlike other staggered hose loads. Hope you enjoy the video.

Only reason why I cringed watching this is because they had the pack it all back up haha
@firefighter2000, we heard about other departments having the idea of making a uniform hose load with couplings up towards the front of the hose bed. To our knowledge, nobody had come up with a good idea on hose loads yet and we have had problems ourselves with the hose getting hung up in the bed upon deployment. One of our guys was injured when the hose hung up in the bed and his leg was pinched between the hose and hydrant. Anyways, we decided to try and come up with a better load so we ripped all of the hose off of the bed and started from scratch. This was the best load we came up with so we tested the hell out of it before sharing it. We have since adopted this load department wide and it's really taking off. Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Have you had an issue with it leaning over onto itself? We started using this load for many reasons which have been discussed above. The issue we have seen is it leaning onto itself and impeding a smooth lay, even making it almost impossible to get off the truck. I've discussed the possiblity of adding a divider between each stack. Any help, ideas, or comments would be appreciated. Thanks, be safe out there.

Very Impressive. Our neighboring, mutual aid department started using this hose load last year. After seeing it in action and watching your video, we have also implemented the same load in our first and second out engine companies. Always a pleasure to see new innovative ways to improve upon the same old, run of the mill hose loads. Good Job. Capt. Z.
My dept. has recently started using this hose load and most of everyone likes it more(except the people who stuck in the 80's and don't want change). how ever we did modify it a little bit on our rescue pumper because it has a narrow but deep hose bed. We did 4 stacks of 3 100' foot sections to get 1200'. works better and saves more room than regular flat load. Never quite training and remember with your hose load, "load pretty, looks pretty, pulls pretty"
why not wrap the hydrant and leave it alone?
has anyone trided this with rubber jacketed hose, and with hose in 50 ft lenghts

Nice video. I am hoping you can give me advice for the new 4" hose we have coming in. It is in 50' section with National threads. I tried for Storz but they went with National. Any advice for loading 800' of the stuff in our engine. Firedrex@msn.com
Excellent idea! We just took delivery of a new E-One pumper with braces for the hose bed cover that take NO account for the 5" stortz couplings. As soon as we got the first 600 feet on, we were seeing where couplings might get stuck on deployment. Hopefully this will solve the issues we're having.
Has anybody tried this with 4"...or know if it will work with 4"??
We actually did it today, I work for the city of chester and we did it with 5 200' rows of rubber 5". After packing it and dropping it it worked like a charm. Lays straight and comes off easier than anticipated. It also gives the driver an opportunity to calculate how much more hose he has off than counting coupling up the street.
We do have engines with the rubber jacket 5" hoses in 100' sections, the same length that we show in the video. There seem to be no issues with any of those units so far. It doesn't lay as flat initially due to the rubber jacket hose "memory" but it eventually gets better over a short period of time.
Has anyone attempted to use this load with Rubber jacketed hose?
Nice job fellas! This an outstanding method for loading 5" hose--the best I've ever seen demonstrated. I really liked how smoothly the hose deploys from the apparatus. The demonstrated hydrant wrapping technique was a nice bonus!
What are the issues you have had in the past? What are the pros of using this?
Great video. We have a new Spartan and looking for ideas. We use 5" as well but in 50' lengths. I assume this set up can be used? Just a few more couplings in each row.
