Toby Jin
Australia
Приєднався 6 жов 2014
Hi, my name is Toby Jin and welcome to the channel. I grow a range of plants which include cacti, succulents, trees, bonsai and many more. My videos almost always contain some sort of process and the result in the same video. This saves the viewer from waiting for updates on the plants that I have grown, and instead, they can watch the entire process in the same video.
In the future, I am planning on also showing you guys the amazing flora we have in eastern Australia by recording plants in habitat.
I also post regularly on my instagram: @jin_toby_plantae (old account got hacked) where you can keep up to date and see what will be coming in the future.
Currently, all videos are edited using Lightworks 2023.1 and all thumbnails are made using GIMP2.10.34, icon and banner made using Canva. (Older videos were created using apps from Adobe Creative Cloud)

Be interested to see an update video if you still have them?
Have you had mealy bugs and if yes, how do you treat? I’m in Sydney and my cactus got a nasty case 😢 I used rubbing alcohol but I think I’ve killed it, time will tell 😔
With mealybugs, I use a product from Bunnings called "Scale Gun", which is a Yates product. I rarely use it however as I don't often get mealies on my plants since I give them systemic fungicide around once a month. However, if you do decide to use the scale gun, it is very strong and it will kill the mealies, but you have to wash the excess spray off the plant so that it doesn't damage the plant once the sun hits it. You shouldn't use this product on any 'blue' cacti as it will wash the blue (which is a layer of farina) off the plant, making them lose their blue colour. Rubbing alcohol should also work, but remember when applying anything onto your cacti, do so in the afternoon or the evening when there is no longer direct sun on the plant as direct sun will cause the plant to burn after you apply any sort of treatment on the epidermis.
good plants
You sound South African boet! Thanks for the info!
Very good introduction to this lovely plant. I keep mine in indirect light (intense heat here in SoCal in the Summer) so it doesn't scorch. I was thrilled when it bloomed, love the tiny flowers! Now we're having cooler weather (December -January) so I've placed it very close to the house so it can benefit from a bit of warmth from an adjacent glass door. Thank you for the warning about the sap; I'll wear disposable nitrile gloves when pruning or removing dead growth. I hope mine will pup. Great video. ♥️ From San Diego, California.
Very nice Video Toby Thank you...its spelled : metasequoia glypto- Strobo- ides😂 btw could you make a Video about Bald cypress versus Dawn redwood??? Remember growth is related to space for Roots, that means in a bigger Container the growth will explode ...
What sort of video would you like to see about Metasequoia vs Taxodium? Do you want to see a video on how to distinguish between the two plants?
@TobyJin for example👍👍👍
Very nice prune job 👏👏👏
I thought they would of rotted . Something I’ll have to try in water .Some have air roots I’ve grown those upside down . My plants need thinning so I’m going to be a lot of cuttings .your vid was interesting thanks .
Great video! I had no idea I could cut the Euphorbia knuthii all the way back... Will that encourage new stems to sprout too? I have a lovely caudex with two long stems... Do you have tips on sizing up the caudex or is that just a matter of time and patience? Thanks!
If your plant only has 2 long branches, you should prune it and it will start to clump and produce more branches, all of which will be a similar length, making the plant look much tidier. If you want the caudex to be larger, keep it under the soil as that encourages it to thicken. Once you raise the caudex up, the part above the soil will thicken extremely slowly.
You should absolutely collect them from National Parks in Australia. 95% of the seeds that fall rot into the ground from lack of light in dense forest. The tree wants you to spread it's offspring. The more we spread them, the better. The whole Brisbane River was Bunya Pine Forest way back. Gumtree weed forests that spread fire have taken their place due to human intervention.
I'm not sure about the National Park rules in Queensland but I am almost certain that you cannot take plant material out of a National Park in NSW without a permit.
Sometimes, when weather very rainy in autumn, (northern hemisphaere), bunya seeds starting germination in their cones. I collect bunya seeds in mid october and after 2 weeks I got very powerfull taproot in pot, and out of pot thru holes in pot! 😀
Looking good Toby!!!
Thank you for this video. It's the only video I've found on starting Albuca Spiralis from seed, so much needed♥.I put the seeds on the surface and waited. The weather turned colder so I put them on a heat mat. I now think I've done it wrong. Will they germinate better at 13C / 55.4F? [My room temp] It's been 2-3 weeks and nothing has happened. Much appreciate your advice. It's really hard to get bulbs in the UK. Well done on doing it different ways.
Many winter growing bulb species will germinate when it gets cold so you don't need a heat mat unless you are preventhing them from freezing. If they are kept too warm, they won't germinate.
@@TobyJin Thank you. I've moved them to a colder place now. Hope I haven't ruined them.
Bonjour les fleurs sa ressemble au castus de Noël
The flowers on the Christmas cactus are also zygomorphic, so they do look similar to some extent.
Tente plantar a Agathis australis, poucos videos sobre esta bela especie da familia da Araucaria
I would give them a go, but I don't have seeds. Araucariaceae are an interesting family of conifers.
I just bought some seeds off someone on eBay and unfortunately they float and feel really light as if they are hollow.
That's no good, maybe if you can source them locally from someone you know, you might have a better chance at getting viable seeds.
@@TobyJin I found a new tree on a military base where there are old cones on the ground. I am going to go by there and see if they will let me collect them off the ground. There were three very old trees a block from my house and one had cones in it but some new person moved into the house and had the trees removed. The bunyas don't get too much love around here in Southern California unfortunately. Everyone I have talked to that has one just complains about them. That's the mentality out here. Thanks Toby
Great collection! 👍 I love this plant and it's flowers! 💚 I have a yello one.😊
Course they produce nuts from macadamia nuts. You don’t need a grafted one , stop giving bad advice.
Grafting will speed up the process of producing nuts as the scion will be from a mature tree. Getting a grafted tree also means you can choose a variety of Macadamia you want as plants don't always grow true from seed.
@ this is what UA-cam and Google teach. Syntropic farming is finding this is completely false. Also Grafted are far more susceptible to disease . It’s just crap. Actually put 100 of each into the ground like we do and see the results.
Where can we purchase the seeds from?
I purchased them from a website called rareplant.me but if you can source them locally, that would also work.
Thank you! Planting my 4 seeds today 🤞
Hi Toby. I live in San Diego and found some bunya cones finally that fell on the ground at a mature tree. They are very rare out here. The cone wasn't quite as big as many that I have seen online and the seeds don't seem to be as big. The cones were old, brown and falling apart. It's very difficult to get the seeds out of the pieces that surround them. I did get one out and it floated in the water. I wonder if the seeds will be viable. They definitely don't look as large as what I have seen in pictures. Now that I think about it I wonder if it is a parana pine but too me it looked like a bunya. All the branches were cut off of one side of the tree probably because the apartment complex didn't like the cones or sharp foliage.
If it is floating, that is not good news as the seeds may not be viable. A good check is to give the seed a shake and if you feel something moving inside, it is definitely not viable.
@@TobyJin Hi Toby. The more I look at the photos I took and the trunk of the tree it is an araucaria angustufolia. It is a gigantic one. That is why the seeds and cones aren't quite as big. I have opened the cones and got 5 seeds out so far and they are all floating but nothing shaking around in the seed. I only know of two parana pines here in San Diego.
257 days in a 4 minute video.very nice!
Your camera is bery dizzying. Frìstrating toʻ watcj.
Sorry to hear that, I do have a small stand for my camera in my newer videos, which should hopefully reduce that issue.
У меня за 6 месяцев вырос на 10 см кактус, в средней полосе, в России❤ У Вас тоже красивый😊
They can grow really quickly when they are happy and actively growing.
How long does Bowiea volubilis take to sprout and how many months or maybe years does it take for the ball to grow a few cm?
It should germinate within a few weeks. The plants I have currently from this video have a bulb with a diameter for around 1-1.5cm, they don't grow too fast and will most likely take several years to get a large bulb.
@@TobyJin It would be wonderful to know that it can grow about 7-10cm within 3-5 years, but from seed if I sow it. What are the best conditions for sowing, can it be done in autumn at home? You can record a new video of what Bowie looks like now.
What about common sense? Pretend the seeds pods fall in the ground in the wild! There's no boiling water There's no sand paper and still new trees will grow naturally in the wild I believe sowing the seeds for more time in water may be couple days will do better.
Many Acacias in Australia grow in environments prone to fires. They are a group of plants that can persist through fire using a geosporous seed bank, that is the seeds will stay dormant in the ground for many years (sometimes decades) without germinating. Dormancy is broken after a fire or disturbance event which 'breaks' the seed coat, allowing water to reach the inside of the seed and stimulating it to germinate. Hence, in this video, I was showing how the seed coat can be broken to induce the seeds to germinate. In terms of trees in the wild, occasional seedlings do pop up even if there is no fire, but after a fire, you can expect a large amount of Acacias and other plants that use this survival strategy to germinate. Hope that information helps you understand why I grow my Acacias like this.
@@TobyJin yes, they go dormant for many years. I just did an experiment! You know Ants never die in water in rainy days because they also have a hard shell in the body but if Ants get washed with soap that hard shell deteriorated and the water goes thru killing them. So i did wash 10 seeds tonight with soap dish for about 5 minutes, I rinse them and leave it water .let's see if my seeds germinate better without boiling water.
Thank you for this video! I planted Albuca spiralis seeds a couple weeks ago and about half have germinated. They are small and look like grass, and I wasn't sure if that was how they were supposed to look. This video is very helpful to show me how the seedlings progress and what to expect and when.
Why is my seed growing roots??
They are like fine white roots
Maybe those are not roots and could be some sort of fungal mycelium. When the seed does send the root down, it should be one thick taproot.
I added some antifungal powder to my potting mix....in an attempt to decrease any fungal infestation
That can also work, liquid systemic fungicides are also great for seedlings as they are easy and safe to use.
Best video. Thx 😊
Hi, I am not familiar with Euphorbia's, but you make me more interested to get to know these plants and maybe care for them in the future. Thanks for the info. New fan here
Can it be planted now at this time? Someone told me that it is not recommended to plant now at this time, but only in the spring. How will the tree not form well if I plant it now?
If you have heat mats and equipment that can provide adequate conditions for the seeds to germinate and for the seedlings to grow, you can sow anytime, but I prefer to sow in spring or early summer so the seedlings can get large enough by winter.
@@TobyJin So you advise me not to start sowing now? I don't have heating mats, in the room where we sit it's so hot in winter, but I don't have heating mats and enough light. Although I have that glass bell in which I could store seeds.
What is the best soil for a Dawn Redwood?
Anhy well draining mix is fine for these plants, they are very easy to grow.
found one at the department store. i had to buy it. caught my was a few dollars for about half the size of yours(noflowers). normally i just get cacti and not these type of succulents.
Its beautiful ❤
My cactus doesnt grow straight like that and they put shoots out on side of a shoot
It may be that the tip has gotten damaged by some pest, which has caused it to branch.
Love all the updates! Thanks for sharing! I’m about to have my first epiphyllum cutting in a week! So excited
This is exactly the type of video I was looking for. Just wanted to find the growth rate. How quickly does it grow from seed?
Not sure, but I have purchased a smaller one that is grown from seed, once they seem to get to the thickness of your finger, they seem to grow quite quickly.
Do you use a heat mat?
And do you think growing in cococoir would be okay? As a sterile medium...
I don't use a heat mat. Adding a bit of coco coir should be ok for small plants.
I have two that have Germinated. What do I do now plant in the ground or keep them in the pot . Do I always keep the bean above the ground . ? We also live in the UK 🇬🇧 are they Hardy or should I keep them as indoor plants.?
I would keep them in the pot. The beans usually fall off when the plants have used all the nutrients within them. Considering where you live, I would not try and plant it in the ground as it is not that frost tolerant, so your best bet is to keep it as an indoor pot plant. Make sure to give it plenty of light.
This was very insightful! Thankyou for you video 🙏🏼 10/10 commentary - don’t ever change bro
Great progress in one year Toby!!
Great, this video has everything that i needed. New to frizzle sizzle. 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video.
May I know how can I buy this whole fruits? Any farm or store sell this?
No, I don't think I have seen Bunya cones for sale before.
@@TobyJin If you can sell these i want to buy
Thank you for all the info! I was given 3 plants a couple of years ago without knowing what they were and for the first time I have 1 big pink flower! Can the canes produce flowers as well or do you cut them to grow new plants?
The canes can produce lateral shoots, which can produce flowers.
Interesting video, I have red ones but they haven’t bloomed yet, lots pot growth since I planted them 1 and 1/2 years ago. Do you know if they bloom in spring, because it’s summer now.
They can usually bloom anytime from spring to summer. By the sounds of it, they seem to be doing well and you probably will get blooms in the coming year or so.
Are the flowers scented?
Unfortunately, they don't seem to be.
Thanks enjoyed the detail.👍
Glad you enjoyed.
