Pianist's Ukulele Diary
United Kingdom
Приєднався 22 лис 2021
My on-and-off ukulele adventure started in 2016. In May 2021, I've started my ukulele diary in hope that it'll help me go beyond my current limitation.
During the year of 2021, I also discovered mandolin! And also piccolo guitar which I hope will help me get on with learning the artistry of gypsy jazz.
I'm a pianist by trade and also teach piano. Learning a new instrument has been giving new insights into the minds of beginners. So, it's kind of helping me in my piano teaching too. It took me a while to find the ground where I'd like to explore in my ukulele adventure but I think I'm finally finding my way forward.

From my ukulele diary 402 - noodling with my new toy! Recorde 4 September 2024 Risa electric soprano ukulele The biggest reason that pushed me to buy yet another ukulele (!) is: 1. Radiused fretboard - my odd shape fingered always struggle to be able to fret 4 strings on any of my ukuleles cleanly that I have. 2. Smaller body than concert size but bigger than soprano size - this makes the posit...

From my guitar diary - 31 Recorded 2 September 2-24 Well, I thought I’d give this a try. I’m still finding it hard to get ahead with gypsy jazz guitar learning. The main reason is it’s not easy for a beginner, by that means, a beginner guitar learner, not a beginner gypsy jazz guitar learner. So, I’d need the basics to be able to play the basic stuff… Some time ago, I attended this one-off onli...

Yes, well spotted! Mini Go 10. Thanks for dropping by!
Beautiful. Thank you for posting these.
Thank you so much!
Wow. Found your channel while looking at videos for this Kiwaya sopranino. Everything you play on it sounds amazing. Is it one that you recommend?
Thank you for stopping by! To keep such small instrument as this "in tuned" must be very tricky but I find mine not bad at all, which mean a good quality, and I like the way the strings resonate. So, I'm very happy with it. I hope you'll find yours too soon!
How many instruments can you play 😳
Properly, piano only. String instruments learning is my current hobby to find a new path to explore new sound in a freer way. I haven't found it yet... so, my experiment continues. Thanks for stopping by!
Hey, it works on Mandolin too because the tuning is the same.
Bandolim means Mandolin in Portuguese so it's a Mandolin
For 8 strings, I would suggest the Thomastik Light Tension Precision Flatwound strings because they're a teeny bit thinner than the stock strings.
I'll definitely try them in the future when I'm ready for getting back to 8 strings again!
@@pianistsukulelediary That's a great idea & it'll totally ROCK. The nice thing about Flatwound Strings is that they'll save the frets from scratches.
Nice play. What string did you use?
D'Addario (EFW74) - Flatwound stainless steel 11-36. I removed 4 strings recently, as a result the tone got even mellower. I hope it help.
Interesting! I recently bought a mandolin that I wanted to tune GCEA - but that didn’t work. Seems the other way around is better!
Absolutely, I highly recommend it. Can't be overstaed if I say that was the discovery of the year! It opend up a whole new world for me. Good luck!
@@pianistsukulelediary could you please let me know where you got the strings from?
@@Uke-Tuber From Amazon UK, it's Aquila Nylgut (31U) CGDA tuning for Concert Ukulele - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005WFTKGS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Beautiful! Can I get tabs for this please?
Thank you for listening! Unfortunately, I don't have a TAB for this but I'll be happy to trascribe it if I can remember what I played there, and will post it on my SoundSlice page, if that's OK (it may take a while). Thanks for asking.
Here it goes, done it quicker than I thought: www.soundslice.com/slices/gQ82c/
Bandolim is the Portuguese word for Mandolin so it's a Mandolin
Ukulele is such a lovely instruments. It works for all sorts of songs and forms of music. I like the Millar uke and the Sierra Hull cover! Thanks for posting.
Thank you for listening and your kind words!
Lovely melody! Thanks for posting.
Thnak you!
You play very well
Thank you for your encouragement!
Viva o Brasa!
Sounds lovely. May I ask, what ukulele are you playing and also, what strings and pick? Thanks.
Millar concert ukulele (TK-240W - luckily I got it for secondhand!) with Aquila Nylgut Concert sized (31U) in fifths tuning (CGDA - 2 low strings are silver wound). I’m using a Dunlop Flow .88mm (green). I’m talking about this discovery in my other video if interested: ua-cam.com/users/shorts2dgN8ChSceA I hope it helps.
Cool
Thank you!
It acts like a Mini Nylon Tenor Guitar
Yes!
Bandolim means Mandolin in Portuguese so this is a Brazilian Mandolin.
Yes, one my best discoveries!
I restrung my Mandolin with Thomastik Precision Strings which are Flat wound Strings designed essentially like Violin Strings and they have a lower tension because of their special design
Good playing. I bet you never tried Thomastik Flatwound Mandolin strings (I have those) & I use them which have super gentle tension.
Thank you so much for your advice. I just looked into it. I’ll definitely try this set when the strings need changing. Pricey but for a single-string user, it’s a good news! Which do you recommend, medium or light tension? Thank you!
@@pianistsukulelediary The Light Tension because w/ all 8 strings it'll have roughly the same tension as the strings on the Brazilian Mandolin do
@@RockStarOscarStern634 Thanks for your advice!
@@pianistsukulelediary I can't wait wait to hear them. They're designed like Violin Strings so you could title your new video "Violin Strings on a Mandolin?, Yes Thomastik Infeld Precision Mandolin Strings".
Beautifully played - Would you mind letting me know what the tuning is and are the strings an octave apart like a 12 stringed guitar or are they the same octave? thank you!
Thank you! They're tuned in 5ths (GDAE), in the same way as violin, bluegrass mandolin, etc. Two strings are the same pitch, not an octave apart. I hope it helps.
I love the low G! Great stuff
Thank you!
🔥🔥🔥🤘🔥🤘🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for listening!
Can you please try Nylon strings? Apparently concert ukulele strings fit, . But im thinking ball end classical guitar strings for the G and d, because both g and 1 d hook tab broke off, and the amount of time I contacted Washburn L.y and this year, they've not got back
Thanks for your feedback. New on me! I'll look into it.
Hello again. Just wanted to say thank you for your suggestion. It lead me to find out also there're 5ths tuning ukulele strings made by Aquila, which are now put on my Millar concert ukulele, so that I can practise mandolin without mandolin until my should injury (from mandolin learning as it happens!) recovers. This was a revelation for me and 5ths tuning and Millar is match made in heaven to my ears! You opened the new door for me, thank you!
love it ❤

This was something I did radomly, so no TAB but I'll be happy to put that on my SoundSlice page for you (video and TAB together). I'll let you know when it's up. Thanks for dropping by!

Similar to interval warm ups for many instruments, including wind instruments. Remington warmups for trombone include an entire section quite similar to this.
Thanks for the input, I'll check it out!
@@pianistsukulelediary and by the way, I mean that as quite a compliment to Sierra Hull. Simple warmups like this contribute heavily to quality techniques that make for beautiful playing in the long run. Her classical training shines through with a simple 4 note pattern.
@@bicparker1 I totally agree. I'm currently on her Artistworks course (since January 2024), and did a couple of video exchange with her. Spot on her observation talent too finding the way to improve things. Now that I'm aware of my faults, I realise that this warm-ups is a way ahead of what I should be doing, so I've decided to put it aside for now!
Your instrument is in tune, which means right of the bat this video is better than 99.8% of videos out there.
Thank you for dropping by!

Recently found your channel, I can't express how much I love the music! Definitely inspired me to compose on my ukulele again :)
Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad to hear that my creative output is doing something!
How does it feel? I am considering one :)
I like the body size, it fits nicely. But for my small hands, I find the nut width a little too wide. But the I love the tone coming out the guitar - I pick with flesh. If you pick with nails, you'll find it quite different. I don't play this very often but there're occasions that I'd need this guitar for tone, so I'm still keeping it. I hope it helps.
Love it! ♥
Thank you for listening!
@@pianistsukulelediary You are so welcome! I was looking for Ukulele videos, and this was perfect! Keep it up!!! ☺
that was so lovely!
Thank you so much!
Is there a truss rod? Can it handle open g tuning?
No truss rod, I suspect. I have a piccolo guitar (tenor size) with a truss rod and it weighs. This one doesn't. I haven't tried open G tuning, so I cannot say. I'd test it for you but I just gave it away to a charity last month...!
Playing ukulele in a fingerpicking style like a baby guitar is not something I often see - is this your jam? 😊
I think I say "yes" to your question. 4-string limitation can often give me surprises!
What a lovely cover/tribute. I know exactly the piece you’re referring to!
Thank you for listening and for your kind words. I'd love to work on the whole song when I feel able!
