Extremely under-rated film. Very good.
I just rewatched this beautiful film, when I putted on I thought it was an error it shows 3 hours because I didn’t remember it was this long. Turns out it was that long but it was so well paced it flew by, I was never bored. Even back when it was release I always thought the premise is ridiculous but by some miracle works, the emotional scenes all worked beautifully. Death, having observed us for millenniums, struggle to understand some basic aspects of our society, not knowing what peanut butter is, was ridiculous but Pitt played so convincingly it never crossed to cringe.
1:50 Love this. I first watched it in 2020 and I think I watched it 3x in the first couple weeks tbh. I'm also a Baton Rouge, LA native so seeing Graham (Spader) and Anne (McDowell) sitting in a restaurant that's effectively across the street from the house I rented at the time, or seeing Cynthia (San Giacomo) bartend at a bar next door to a place I had a DJ residency made the film that much more impactful.
Death actually blesses Bill by giving him time to accept his end. That is life. What can I tell you. Most people die before they are ready.
Good looking movie with great actors (Hopkins) but, it makes no sense logically.
The film simply blew me away. Your video was a worthy perspective
Chef d’œuvre absolu !
There are so many similarities between the character of Anthony Hopkins here and Logan Roy in Succession.
Those pilots have to be absolutely devastated and full of guilt. I feel so bad for them and all the men who lost their lives during this horrible tragedy. Just heartbreaking and upsetting to see how all of this unfolded
Lived in Cave Creek for 15 years. I knew a couple of those guys. Just about the best people you could know. Full of laughs and grit. Pillars of the community. The best of all of us.
I have never seen this movie, but I have Brad Pitts haircut.
So gorgeous, and I’m always surprised by the ending. Nobody gets what they want…but they all seem to get what they need. Or deserve. 👍🏼
A great movie and even greater book.
Summer Tale is the most enjoyable of his Four Seasons series, which are already all great movies. I have the advantage that my first language is French, but seeing that this video's author knows how to appreciate Rohmer goes to show that this director truly has universal appeal.
So . . . Mark is a tank?
M1 Abrams no doubt, all American fuel
This is one of my absolute favorite movies. Being a man It genuinely takes a lot to make me cry or get emotional in movies. This easily did that to me. The score is absolutely breathtaking.
I found this films extremely moving so much it’s hard to watch it but you can’t stop …what brave men
I’ve seen this movie before pretty good
I’m sure the people of Arkansas are offended that nobody would think that there are no schools let alone colleges out there.
Yeah, my 1st thought was... must not be much of a football fan. Lol!
Loved this one
Andrew I respect your thoughtful review. Thanks.
Visited your letterboxd profile. You love this film, Sandlot and Sing Street besides. I think that's cool, man.
Excellent ❤
You were doing so fine, but then you just cut when it's time to really get into the details on how the film is made, how it uses images, the story for each character, etc. What did the ending do to what happened before? Etc. You should make a part 2. Please do. That's no lie.😶🌫
This movie is about your life and what you’re going to do with it aka how are you going to live it
The movie is not about cars lol
This is not just a stoner movie, I don’t even consider it a stoner movie at all actually.
One of my top five favorite films of the 70’s
yesterday I was having a small discussion with my children. We were discussing something about ordering through a drive-through and we were also discussing about how do you some fast food businesses like Starbucks you have the opportunity to really fine-tune your order to sell my new text detail and I was telling them about a film with Jack Nicholson in which the waitress was asking him for his order and he decided to change it from their preset orders and then I showed them the film and I asked them for their feedback so we watched a clip from the film five easy pieces but after I showed them that clip on my own, I decided to watch this other one in which some guy he analyze this film and cinema from that time and how influential this film wars so I thought I would share that clip here:
I knew I wasn't the only one sympatheizing (and sure hating for his indecisiveness) with Gaspard. And I agree with you that those long takes will make these characters vulnerable to audience's preference. Because they're so naked in these long takes. And yet you can see the human nature which is so hard to define, good, evil, or otherwise, in these characters. And what makes a film so beautiful is when it's not able to define or explain in three sentences. If someone just said Gaspard is a womanizing character, and that's all this film is about, I'd feel sorry for him for not understanding this film deeper and appreciate everything else that makes this film great. I also watched A Tale of Autumn and The Green Ray. Green Ray have one of the best cinematography but still A Tale of Summer is more effortless and convincing to me.
Nicely said. Great films should be complex
There Will Be Blood is still my fave PTA film. Magnolia isn't so special when you realize Short Cuts was basically the same thing but done earlier. Too many characters, too long, not satisfying. And Julianne Moore is in both films.
Great movie. Shows the messiness of life in its true form. People haven’t really changed much.
It's my favorite film. Perhaps Sunny never leaves because he's waiting for the town to really become his home.
I liked the movie a little bit, it was sweet and funny, but the directing was so boring the movie felt so much longer than it is! Can't consider it a good movie but I had a somewhat good time
I really loved the generational mixing in the town depicted in LPS. The town social/dance section was quite interesting. People didn’t mix like that in my 1960’s New Jersey town. Did it even really happen in 1950s Texas? Ben Johnson was phenomenal.
This movie is the slowest pointless movie I've ever seen, and I'm a fan of French cinema.
you summed it up great man. at the end of the movie I felt like I've learned something but wasn't sure what is it that I've learned
why is the title of the video that?
inspiring, I don't get how it is but something's there
The New Bev does it right, especially compared to chains. My biggest complaint is always the sound at AMC is so quiet half the time if you’re not in IMAX or Dolby.
I will say I feel like the loudest movie I saw was Civil War this year at an AMC but it was IMAX. New Bev is a great spot, can’t beat the selections
Brilliant
Very thoughtful and compassionate analysis. Loved your LAST PIC essay, too. More, please. If this is nostalgia, what will you make of AMERICAN GRAFFITI?
I love American Graffiti as well! I feel a bit closer to Dazed but Graffiti is still great. Lots of wonderful characters and bits from there, you got Ford, Howard, Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, and Wolfman Jack. If Dazed is my parent's era, then Graffiti is their parent's era.
Your video was very interesting in your description of "Meet Joe Black," which I love because of the character interactions and the interesting themes, and especially Claire Forlani and Anthony Hopkins (but all actors were fantastic!) !! But I don't agree with your take on Anthony Hopkins, and how he was chosen for Death to take a holiday. Maybe read this, and watch it again! It was presented that he (Death, or "Joe") heard Anthony Hopkins as the father Bill, describing true love to his daughter Susan (Claire Forlani) in the most intriguing and beautiful way! The writing was simply fantastic, and it's a wonderful scene! Death, who was coming for Bill in the beginning, was so intrigued that he decided he wanted to stay on earth for a while and experience love himself! That's why Bill got a reprieve from dying - not that he needed to redeem himself and make amends with his family, but he simply got this bonus time to "show Death around" this life! And Bill DID love his family : he had had a wonderful love with his wife who had passed already, and loved his daughters, and was an extremely clever and honest businessman! In fact, Death said that Bill had lived an exemplary life, and that's another reason that he wanted Bill to show him around! What you said about how Bill used his time left was right : he enhanced his time with his loved ones. But when you watch it again, pay close attention in the beginning when the premise is set up. It's all about a GOOD man getting more time on earth so that Death could experience love and life. (This is all just the premise, so I haven't spoiled the actual movie for anyone who hasn't seen it) And yes, this is a fantasy, obviously, but it's presented in a serious way, and is a remake of an old movie called, "Death Takes a Holiday." It's beautifully shot, and with a beautiful music score, so although long, it's really pleasant to watch! And it gives one a LOT of food for thought!
great treatment of a fantastic film that deserves rethinking. Richard Feynman in Six Easy Pieces 1963 said about physics 'one needs a considerable amount of preparatory training even to learn what the words mean...we can only do it piece by piece'
I'll still chuckle at Rotten tomatoes score of 82% for Magnolia.
Recently re-watched and as fantastic as the first time. Great story, great performances.
It only bothers me at the end… when coffee shop guy comes back to life 🤷♂️ That makes absolutely no sense.
That’s what he promised her
I LOVE Magnolia. By far my favourite of his films.
I am a huge fan of all things americana, just absolutely adore the charm such movies have. I’m from New Delhi India but I cannot express in words how bad I wanted to have that college life. Dazed and confused too was one sweet movie.
