yeah no, the type of weapon is not a deciding factor for whether it was used for self defense or not.
Ar-15s are used quite a lot in home self defense, every state has a form of castle doctrine, which always you to protect your home from intrusion ie. Break ins no matter the time of day or night in your home as you do not know that persons intent. The castle doctrine even in states without a stand your ground law and you have a duty to retreat in public, castle doctrines in your home you don't have to retreat, it protects you as the home owner. Of course there may be better situations for a shotgun or handgun. But you don't know at 3am when you're woken from a dead sleep, you grab what you deem fit for use. As a firearms instructor that owns a shooting and training center. There are two handguns very accessible for my wife and I and two AR-15 suppressed sbrs mine and my wifes.
