    Hi Lionel - great video! Haven't been to STEAM since I took my daughter there many years ago. I found this about the 'Camel' loco No 3352 on Wikipedia: "In October 1899 no. 3352 Camel appeared with the final form of the parallel No. 2 boiler, domeless, with a raised Belpaire firebox and a circular drumhead smokebox supported on a curved saddle. A further twenty locomotives, nos. 3332 to 3351, were built between November 1899 and March 1900. Between May and December 1900 a second batch of twenty Camels (as the class were initially known) were built with straight-topped outside frames. These were numbered 3353 to 3372. A third batch, 3413 to 3432 were built between December 1902 and May 1903; these were the last to be built with parallel boilers." Hope this helps! Yes, sadly a lot of train cancellations on the (modern version of the) GWR in recent weeks - seems to be getting worse. Previously, GWR have been one of the better companies in terms of fewer cancellations. Hope it improves soon. I am very familiar with Swindon Station, being at the end of the Golden Valley Line from Gloucester. I often go on to Westbury (via Melksham) and then Devon & Cornwall from there. The Severn Tunnel closure has also been causing chaos, but it was necessary work that needed to be done. Think it is all done now. Such a shame these works were closed - could have been used to build modern electric trains, rather than importing them as now. A waste of skills, infrastrcuture and land. Good that this lovely museum captures what life was like in this incredible loco workshop. Thank you for a wonderful video! Take care, Paul

      Good morning Paul. Thanks for your very helpful comments regarding the Camel locomotives. I must admit it was a new one to me. I actually made two trips for that video. The first one last week took me so long to find the place, that I ran out of time. So I made a second trip this Wednesday to cover Swindon Station and the Traverser, plus the beautiful buildings which are still standing. Couldn’t really understand if what's left of the traverser was once inside the assembly shop, or whether it had been recreated for the museum. But it did explain how they got those locomotives inside. Thanks once again for your lovely comments. They're very much appreciated.

    That was a nice adventure Lionel. I have to say my sense of direction is quite good above ground, but under ground is a different matter. I have usually worked the Tube out by the end of the day when it is time to go home, then forgotten again by the next visit. Nice to watch the boats and Mary beautiful and elegant as ever. Take care. But then I was just 8 or 9 years old at the time. It's strange that I can't remember that piece of platform on the end, but it must have been there. I've seen pictures with a footbridge at the road bridge end, but it must have been only for a short while.

    Wow, this video brought back such a rush of nostalgia! 🏫 I love how those old village schoolhouses have such a timeless charm about them. It's amazing to see how little has changed. The bit about the viaduct being demolished seems a shame, though. 😕 It must have been an impressive sight.

    • @lionelmarytravels6003
      @lionelmarytravels6003 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for your interesting comment. Village schools of that era are so recognisable, with their flintstone walls and high windows, to stop the children being distracted by anything going on outside. But I suppose they also allowed more natural light into the classroom. Even when they become private homes, their original purpose is still apparent. It's surprising that this school is still being used as a school, maybe its the only school of this type for miles around. East Meon had a similar type of infant/junior school, before it was moved to a new site in the village. This too is now a private dwelling, but still looks the same as it did when I attended it. The old viaduct was indeed an enormous structure and I can remember it very well. We left the area in 1954, so it was demolished not too long after that. Such a shame. Could have been left. I'm surprised it wasn't a listed building.

Marlborough is less than an hour's drive from where I live in mid Gloucestershire, so I could get to this part and back in day from home quite comfortably I think, well as soon as we get a bit more daylight! It looks really lovely there, well apart from the flooding of course! Been particularly bad this winter for flooding right across the wider Westcountry. Natty gadget with the remote and bendy tripod! That’s right, I can’t remember the year they stopped tipping rubbish and grassed it over, but if you walk to the far end by where I think they’ve created a BMX track or some such thing for the kids, you used to be able to see the vent pipes sticking out the ground for the methane gases to escape and prevent an explosion! That’s the reason why that rough ground on the other side of the track has been left! Of course another famous local character long gone was the indomitable Mrs Betty Skelton who had the riding school at Penton Mewsey. Ron Amey (AMEY Construction) used to live in Penton Mewsey took over the business from his father. Also, Sir George Young Bt MP preferred to live there and I know Lord David Howell who sits in the House of Lords lived along Chalkcroft Lane in what was an old damp rundown Dunning farmhouse that Peter Carey, their gamekeeper used to occupy. My fondest memory is of Ada Dunning (Victor’s sister) who lived in Penton Harroway Farmhouse. She used to run the office at the family’s building company situated at Weyhill Fair on land owned by the Ewelme Trust (the thirteen good men of Oxford) and used to salt her own meat and churn her own butter. John Isherwood of Barker, Son & Isherwood and District Judge John Chalkly were two other village stalwarts. But perhaps the most notorious resident was the Reverend who oversaw the scandalous Andover Workhouse! The Bennett family farmed at Bluebell Farm, Penton Grafton but no idea if they’re still around or even the North family that used to farm at Clanville or the Marchment family that used to have the farm on Foxcotte Lane at the rear of the Dunning’s Elm Grove Park housing development. They’re interesting houses as they were some of the first all timber framed new builds to be built in the UK and at the time where considered by many in the trade to be the devil incarnate! Anyway, that’s enough of my droning on. Please say if you’re sick and tired of me commenting over your shows and I’ll shut up! Keep up the good diaries you’re producing for the generations to come, some of whom maybe interested to see the places we both know and love, as they once were, and perhaps hear some of the stories to tell! If your viewers are interested in the Town Mill, Author and winemaker Cyril Berry lived in the town and served as its mayor in 1972-1973. He wrote an interesting book telling about how the Mill used to be from the perspective of a child growing up in Andover back in its heyday. I think it’s called Old Andover?

      @@farmer6861 I'll never get tired of you filling in details of the places and people, often before my time. I well remember Dunnings at Weyhill, where they had timber yard. In the '80s I used to go there for bales of wood shavings to be used in the farm chicken House where I worked. I also know they owned a lot of ground in the area. In Penton, I knew Sir George Young and looked after their garden until he moved away. Lovely couple. So friendly. My next project will be about Taskers, with whom I had dealings with over the years, so I know quite a lot of history there. If you've got any knowledge of them, I would be very grateful to hear it. Thanks so much for your input. It's much appreciated. Best wishes. Lionel

      Ok thanks, as it happens my Grandfather worked for Taskers doing piece work on a lathe making wheel hubs. Back in the day when there was a sub post-office in Anna Valley. Of course the Dunnings you mentioned also owned Clatford Lodge which they converted to flats which originally was the home of Robert Tasker. I can remember the sheds for the Iron Works at Anna Valley I don’t know if you know Derek Marder who had a yard at Ox Drove, Picket Piece and has a couple of Steam Rollers built by Taskers. You’ve also got the watercress beds in Anna Valley which is also interesting as well as the Greenfield Pork man! I think his name was Martin Martindale? I think that the Waterloo Works buildings were all gone by the mid-80s as I’m sure you know.

      @@farmer6861 I've always taken photographs and I drove past Taskers entrance several times a week, but never took a picture of it. According to what I have read, they used a wharf on the canal at Upper Clatford. When the railway arrived, they had a private siding at this spot, but here again, that's all I can find out. I know the yard you are referring to on Ox Drove, but I didn't know the owners name. I'm trying to think where Clatford Lodge is. I should know! When we first moved to the area, there was a farm at the top of hill in Upper Clatford, opposite Mollys shop. We used to get sacks of potatoes from him. That's called Sam Whites Hill, so maybe that was also the name of the farm. I recall the sub post office in Anna Valley, opposite Taskers. It was here that Andover Garden Centre was born. I was very much involved with setting it up and later moving it to its present position, now Dobbie's. Once again, nice to hear from you. All the best. Lionel

    • @farmer6861
      @farmer6861 6 місяців тому

      Yes, DC Li and his son Joe were the local developers and did the barn conversions at that farm opposite the shop. The turning to get to Clarford Lodge is on the left before the garden centre next to the yellow brick house where an Admiral used to live. I shall await your Taskers broadcast with interest. If you’ve not been already, the Transport Museum in Basingstoke has a fantastic Taskers display of artefacts etc. I’ve got a few of my own handed down which I’ll probably donate one day. I gifted my great grandfathers world wars medals to the Hampshire Museum Trust. His name was Ernest “Jock” May and he worked on Yew Tree Farm, Goodworth Clatford as a Carter.

Good shots of Victor Dunning’s and Rodney Bennett’s fields at Penton Grafton. Of course Mr Victor’s grandson has sold out to the Solar Farm men! Some anglers claim that there’s a big Pike in that holding pond by the weir that lives off the ducks! Many years ago Carters Meadow flooded quite badly. Never learn still build on the floodplain!

    What a lovely walk Lionel, beautiful place, there was water coming out of everywhere. You made good use of a tripod? And remote. I struggled a bit with the commentary, but I think I need my ears looked at. Nice watch again. Ron

      Nothing wrong with your ears , Ron. I know I don't always talk clearly, which why I use titles quite a lot. The only tripod I've got is one of those bendy ones, but the remote is perfect, as I can keep it in my pocket on cold days. That way only one hand gets cold.

    An awful lot of rain, Lionel. I guess we should be thankful it wasn’t snow! It’s certainly curtailed my adventures for a couple of months. Hoping for a drier spring, but storm Isha has arrived overnight. Thanks for sharing your walk. Take care, Folks. Ron.

    Another enjoyable video produced for us viewers. I knew the Collingbournes well once upon a time so that part was particularly interesting. I remember when Newton Tony homes were badly flooded by water then sewage! 2000 I think it was. I see the coal yard in Ducis is gone along with the tractor yard and The Last Straw Pub looks like it’s a house after a devastating fire. You’re brave walking along the A338!

      I wouldn't want to walk far anywhere on that road. It's the most awful A class road I can think of. Thanks for your comments

      Hello again. Your knowledge intrigued me. The coal yard at Ducis! Was that something to do with the railway? And where was the tractor yard, not to mention the Last Straw Pub. I've never heard of that place. Thanks for filling in my missing details. Regards from Lionel

      @@lionelmarytravels6003 My father bought land from Mr New by the old petrol filling station long since closed and built 2 houses. Paddy Larkin built one in between them and as a boy I laboured on site knocking up muck for George Hiscock the bricklayer. The school bus used to pick us up from outside the pub in Kingston (now called The BarleyCorn I believe?). Believe it or not a fellow used to keep a Chimpanzee in a cage in his garden which was a magnet for us kids and he would regularly tell us to clear off when his pet got excited! That’s right that yard you past on your way past The Blue Lion Pub (not sure if still a pub anymore?) was a former goods yard which later became J Bale & Sons Coal Merchants who delivered around the local district, including Tidworth. I can picture them now in leather waistcoats carrying large bags of coal down our alley, their faces black with coal dust! Can’t remember much about the tractor sales, but a friend’s brother worked for a company on the Bourne Iron Works who manufactured milking machines and farming equipment. The Last Straw was an attractive thatched pub situated on the High Street and is now a residence I believe? It was once the Police Station and in the 70s was a grill house. Sorry it was all a long time ago and I’m getting on so the memories fade! Enjoy your videos very much. Thank you

    Thanks @farmer.when I first saw the river, I couldn't understand why it was flowing in two different directions. Wasn't until I actually walked it did I realise what was happening. Of course, it soon turns back to the South again, through Salisbury.

      That was the old bus station in Amesbury. No longer there, now a car park. Most of that Salisbury bus company's terminals are now on drafty streets. I think Poole still has a recognised bus station, but that's the only one.
