I saw John Martyn twice at Leicester University in 1996 & 1998 for the Church with One Bell tour. He was amazing on both occasions. He was very interactive with the crowd. I remember my friend Xena telling me he looked liked he'd been sleeping in his van as his suit was so creased. He had a great voice then which had deepened & improved over time. At the 96 gig a load of female students ran up to the stage & asked him ho do 'Solid Air', which he said he'd do. I laughed at the end as he never did do it on that gig. He did do it on the 98 gig though, said it was 'For a guy I once knew who had a few problems'. When he started playing 'Solid Air' the room went absolutely silent & I felt the air stand up on the back of my neck. Absolutely amazing. I got into Nick Drake in the early 90's. Got his albums on cd out from Nottingham Library & devoured them. Bought them & others in the following years. Both of these performers are untouchable.

John Martyn was a fixture of my own personal summer of love 1972 or 73. Solid Air transformed my whole musical outlook along with Dark Side OTM. I saw him in Philly once, magical stuff. Now retired in Florida thinking about times in Somers Point and Ocean City NJ growing up. I didn't become aware of Nick Drake til about 25 tears ago, my intuition said John Martyn must have known him, sure enough. Did not know until then that the mysterious Solid Air was about Nick.

This is a great album. While not reaching the heights of Brothers and Sisters it was still a very good album. Seemed a bit more laid back and subdued. Always great to see videos from you.

the meters are part of the "is"-ness of new orleans for sure. i saw them backing dr. john at bonnaroo in 2011. they did the desitively bonnaroo record. it was an R&B clinic of the highest order.

Have you ever heard this UK LP AC? It has some Indian influences 'Clark Hutchinson A=mh2'. A UK duo. I used to play it quite a lot... ah yeah, I bought the LP from Richard Branson himself, he had a small stall at the Marquee National Blues & jazz Festival, 1968, I think he had just got his 'mail order' selling of LPs going around then. Gotta say, when he, and others started the mail order thing it was a revolution... suddenly you could get your hands on records that were practically impossible otherwise. LOL, I saw this duo sometime later, '70?, at an all-nighter with the original Hawkwind, Lemmy 🙂, but Clarke 'n Hutchinson were phukin' STONED 🙂 They later became a 5 piece band - check that line up's song 'Free to be Stoned'.
