Excellent documentary. I regularly vacation around the Winona Mn. area. The GB&W bridge across the Mississippi River is long out of use but the rest of the line to Wisconsin Rapids has been upgraded to 135lb rail and is used to haul unit frac sand trains. I could imagine a double headed set of these Mikes on the point. If only..........

The first compound articulated locomotives had messy looking exteriors. Running at higher speeds must have applied a high drag force.

I'm glad the Canadians saw fit to put these rare machines to good use, the US Navy has a tragic history of destroying historic planes. The gorgeous Martin P6M SeaMasters were ignominiously ordered destroyed without a single example spared for museum display. In about 1970, my dad took us to his first Navy duty station, NAS Newport News. On display there was the P2V "Truculent Turtle," and a Japanese "Emily" flying boat. The base commander at the time wanted them scrapped. Fortunately, he didn't his way, a Japanese preservation group restored the Emily and it's on display in Japan, the Turtle went to the Naval Air Museum. In one hideous incident, the commander of the Naval Air Test Center Patuxent River had a rare captured Arado 234 Blitz shoved off the end of the runway with a bull dozer because he thought it was an "eyesore." And that was in the 1970s, long after the end of the war, when scrapping wartime aircraft was fashionable. Only one of those airplanes survives today. I hope one of them eventually makes it to the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola...

I’m getting really sick of these sort of things where people think it is OK to just get rid of these historic ships and other things like this. While I was researching the situation and signing the petition I found a petition from some so-called environmental organization saying why it was important that they do sink the ship down there but what they fail to recognize as pointed out in this video it’s not quite as simple as just sinking a ship and they fail to recognize that this isn’t any old cargo freighter or something like that, this is a historic vessel. If Trump wanted to do something for his legacy and for America rather than renaming the gulf of Mexico maybe he could simply use some of his money to restore this as a great symbol of American industry world power and prowess. I don’t know why we keep running into these situations over and over. Look at the Falls of Clyde. That is an absolutely crucial piece of history and it was on the national historic registry and everything and now they took it off the historic registry and are planning on also scrapping that as well. Numerous organizations have worked to save the ship and the state of Hawaii has done nothing but throw monkey wrenches at them. I don’t understand it, we have these historic ships and they have somehow made it this far this long and yet we allow them to slip right through the cracks! I don’t understand it! We are destroying our own heritage for no logical reason. I’m getting really fed up with this! I wish these people would look at the bigger picture and look towards the future and think about our children and future generations but I guess they just can’t see the big picture!

I saw them in the 1970s. They were bombing fires on Vancouver Island, very steep slopes & skinny valleys. Extraordinarily impressive - planes near vertical to paste the fire. Great to see that they will be preserved.

There is actually a Supplemental Type Certification to have updated the Mars to turbo-props. But Coulson didn't want to spend that kind of investment money, when they could convert C-130's instead. But the Mars could haul, hold, and drop more water per run than the C-130s. So this is another story of a company not reinvesting in themselves for short term profit margins and therefore losing part of the company infrastructure for pennies on the dollar donation/sales in the long term. While the C-130s have greater operational flexibility with landing on runways, a turbo-propped Mars would have had a shorter take-off than current allowing more opportunities also.

My dad worked for one of the companies in the consortium that bought the planes. In the early 70's when we'd go to the west coast of Vancouver Island we always stopped off to visit the tankers. As a kid I was able to get into the cockpit of the Mars as well as Catalinas and Avengers, on the ground of course, and talk with the pilots. Dad knew one of the crew members killed in the crash but that happened before my time.

I so want a mini version of this type of airframe design. We are all learning that sail and prop transport has its place. Slow and cheap may be more of our future as society. Sadly greed will take a big hit to get us to change. But saving these airgrames and pbys will keep it in engineers minds and hopefully society holds on

So first they said, they wanted to scrap this old lady. Then they wanted to sink her, and now with this invasive fish species story, this sinking won't be fruitful. So again they will push for scrapping her. So no money to spend on sinking project, no money to put in the Museum project, and get good money by scrapping it. This suits the money-minded US thinking very well.

I am very interested to see your video on the Green Bay & Western 2-8-2 engines from Alco 1937. Later, ALCo copied these in the 1947 production of the French 1-4-1R locos to recover from the destruction of World War 2. Several still operate in preservation in France and Switzerland and Germany. Very interesting.

With D slide valves for the front cylinder, they must have been very slow engines as most operators found 15 mph the fastest that the valve could handle in compound mode. Uniflow just wasn’t a train thing, thou worked well in the Marine environment. Have fun.

I belong to an organization the has the only surviving Southern Pacific New Orleans built Mikado. After WW1 the SP built 11 Mikados in it Algiers shops and 1 in Houston. Algiers is part of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. There are several videos of her out running on the KCS and other Class One Railroads in Louisiana and Mississippi. Search SPX745 Steam Locomotive. She was rebuilt in the early 2000s and operated between April 2004 and April 2019. She should start her next rebuild in the near future as grants have been obtained and those moneys should be available pretty soon.

To get those locomotives from Texarkana to Shreveport, they had to be cold, water drained from the boiler, and towed across the Caddo Lake bridge at a walk because the weight of the locomotive dry was at the load limit of the bridge.

Not a fan of this video. I understand why he's upset, but that's no reason to claim the landlord wants to destroy history. That's misinformation, and it's a dick move. The S.S. United States is pretty well screwed. It's almost as big as a warship, and it's been gutted and sitting for decades. Ships are difficult enough to keep in good nick when they're running, never mind one sitting in the water with no repairs. If someone can save it, I'd cheer, but the sinking permits have been purchased. Also, artificial reefs support way more than lionfish.
