Bravo Dancing Ballroom Academy at SoHo Dance LA
Приєднався 22 жов 2007
This channel began as a repository of review videos for my students who are taking any one of my group classes. In an attempt to help them remember what they have learned in class. Many of those videos are still on this channel, but I have finally gotten around to creating dedicated instructional videos. I encourage you to try as many of these steps as possible, and then actually got out dancing with friends. Be patient with yourself if you find it a little difficult at the beginning. It takes a bit of getting used to dancing that closely with another person, but if you stick it out, you'll get the hang of it. Happy Dancing!

Waltz Side-by-Side Change Steps
Переглядів 13 тис.6 років тому
Side-by-Side Change Steps are a series of progressive half boxes that are danced turning away and towards one's partner. It flows quite naturally from a 6 count underarm turn, or it can be danced directly from the basic box step.
Underarm Turns: The Hands
Переглядів 3,6 тис.7 років тому
There are many different types of underarm turns to right and to left, but the way the connected hand interact are more consistent. The video addresses the most common ways of molding the hands during turns to left and to right. While there are a few other variations available, this is a good set of rules to get you started.
Dance Postion: Basic Technique
Переглядів 12 тис.7 років тому
Dancing in close quarters with another person can seem really difficult at first, but a large part of being able to move with another person lies in having a correct and useful dance position. This video covers some of the very basic elements of ballroom dance postion, including the points of contact, and the proper alignment to one another.
Waltz 6-Count Underarm Turn
Переглядів 15 тис.7 років тому
The 6-Count Underarm Turn is unusual in that the follow turns to the right over 6 steps, as opposed to most underarm turns that are danced in just 1-3 steps. The result if a full, billowy action that is great for wedding dances, although it is a very popular figure amongst social dancers as well. This figure looks and feels the best when a lot of space is taken up, but when dancing on a crowded...

Foxtrot Underarm Turn to Right From Promenade Position
Переглядів 8 тис.7 років тому
There are a couple of ways of dancing an underarm turn to right from promenade position in Foxtrot, but I find this to be one of the better versions for beginners. For the lead, the basic structure of the step is the same as dancing the Basic in Promenade, but they do need to deal with leading the follow's underarm turn while dancing their part. The follow, on the other hand, has very different...
Foxtrot Basic in Promenade
Переглядів 7 тис.7 років тому
Promenade is a dance position where both partners are facing and dancing in the same direction. In this case, the basic figure is danced in promenade position, which means that both partners walk forward, and instead of the chasse being a side step, the chasse becomes a forward action.
Foxtrot Progressive Quarter Turns
Переглядів 7 тис.7 років тому
Progressive Quarter Turns is a slightly more advanced figure that combines a forward Basic that turns a quarter to the right, and a back Basic that turns a quarter to the left. The end result is a sort of zig-zag action down the line of dance.
Foxtrot Basic

Learn how to dance the basic step in American Foxtrot with Lorena Bravo and Jonathan Atkinson. This step is the foundation for social foxtrot, so start here if you're just starting with ballroom dancing! The Foxtrot Basic is comprised of two walks, and a "chasse." A chasse is a series of two or three steps, where the feet close on the second step. In this case, we only use two steps. Generally ...
Foxtrot Left Hesitation Turn
Переглядів 11 тис.7 років тому
The Left Hesitation Turn is a very useful figure for navigating the dance floor. Like the basic, it is comprised of two walks and a chasse, but unlike the basic, the second walk reverses the direction of travel. The chasse can then either not turn at all, or turn up to 3/8 of a turn to the left, thus giving the dancers a new path to travel. Alternatively, the Left Hesitation Turn can be repeate...

Wonderful clear demonstration.
Also we had a song called the waltz
Crazy . I was looking for an old song I did with a band called Noizbox called Turn Left . Weird right?
How funny! It's always surprising what sorts of things will turn up with search terms that seem really straightforward. I hope you found your song, and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Excellent
Thank you! I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
De loin, les meilleures explications sur YT. Merci !
Merci pour les mots gentils! Bonne danse !
Started learning this last night, and quite literally I was turned around, haha🙂🙃🙂 This is a superb set of instructions for both halves of the duo🕺💃 Thank you so much for omitting the usual pleas for subscribers and bell dings, it occurs to me what a joy it is not to have to endure them. This tidy little video vignette is so smooth and clean. Flawless, really. Liked & Subscribed!
Thank you so very much for the kind words! We both really love teaching, so it's very gratifying to know that you are finding our little videos useful. We are hoping to start producing more videos sometime soon. It's been we weird time since the pandemic, but we will be back on track again soon!
Thanks Simplified explanation.. Easy to understand..
Thank you kindly!
Too good
Thanks so much!
Too good
Thank you for the nice comment! It is appreciated!
Great instructions! Steps are easy for beginners. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you so much! I am very glad that you're enjoying these. I am hoping to make more over the summer. It has been a long time since I've been able to get back to this project.!
Great demo with approachable instructions beyond your basic box steps presentation.
Thanks so much, Jason! I'm sorry it took so long to reply to you, but your kind comment is very much appreciated. I'm hoping to release a few more over the summer, and I hope you will find those useful too!
Presentation is so excellent, so logical and inclusive.
Hello Jason! Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you found the video useful. Happy dancing to you!
@@bravodancing Thanks Lorena for your kind reply. I was a fan of Waltz before dancing LA/Mambo salsa in Beijing. Your teaching is very adaptable to ballroom social dancing even here in Beijing.
Nice music
Thanks so much! The Waltz was actually composed by my dance partner, Jonathan. The end credits were created by BenSounds, which is a fantastic site that makes royalty free music. They have a huge selection of free pieces and premium pieces for a fee. Anyway, thanks so much for watching!
U r great teachers.
Again, thank you so much! I'm so glad you're finding the videos useful.
Really nice and easy explanations...thanks.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Hi there. Thank you for explaining the passing of the foot and the open natural/reverse turns. I have an open natural turn in my routine and have found it challenging. Your explanation of the shoulder leads I will work on next week.
Thanks so much Sea! I'm so glad the video was helpful to you. I am currently working on a project to provide much more comprehensive videos that should stand alone as opposed to these little videos that were only meant to be reviews of classes taught live. Hopefully you'll find those useful when I release them!
I just realized that I replied from my other account. Sorry about that! The sentiment remains!
These videos are great! Better than the most popular ones on this site! Could you also explain how to keep the time during dancing? I'm confused about why there are 6 beats worth dance to 4/4 music time.
Hi Baji. Thank you so much for the kind feedback! Let me take a stab at explaining the timing on here. It's a really good question, and I may try to do a video on the subject in the future. As you have correctly observed, the basic in social Foxtrot is danced over 6 beats of music, but the music that it is usually danced to only has 4 beats in a measure. The result is that if you begin your first basic on beat one of a measure, by the time you finish, you will be ready to dance your next figure beginning on beat 3 of the following measure. If you were to continue using this rhythm pattern, by the time you began your third pattern, you would find yourself once again beginning on beat one of the 4th measure of music. In other words, you will find yourself beginning on beat one of a measure on every other pattern, and beginning on beat 3 on the interim steps. While that might seem very strange, it is in fact the prescribed timing for the dance. Some styles of swing also use 6 beat patterns. East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, and Jive are some examples. As you keep studying these dances, you will find that while the "backbone" of the dance is based on a six beat basic, there are several figures that use a 4 beat or even an 8 beat pattern. I haven't covered any of these patterns just yet, but hopefully I'll be able to get to them soon. In the meantime, take a look at the Waltz figures and try to apply a Slow-Quick-Quick timing to them instead of the normal 1-2-3 timing. Take the basic box step as an example. As you take the forward step on your left foot, slow down your pace so that you use up two beats of music instead of just the one (Slow). Then, speed up as you take the side step to the right to only use one beat of music (Quick), and close your feet on the next beat (Quick). You can repeat the same rhythm pattern on the back half of the box. Now you have taken a Waltz step and turned it into a Foxtrot step. Going back to your question of why, the truth is I don't really know exactly how that rhythm pattern emerged in the dancing. My best guess is that the interesting a complex rhythms found in jazz music inspired people to dance in rhythmically interesting ways, i.e. not being restricted to always beginning on beat 1. Again this is complete speculation on my part, but if I ever do come across the answer, I'll be sure to come back and let you know. I hope this was helpful. Happy dancing!
That's an excellent explanation, very helpful! Thank you very much!
Very well explained. Easy to follow. Thank you.
Hi! I'm so sorry for the slow reply, but I wanted to make sure to thank you for the encouraging feedback. Online, people usually more eager to criticize than to praise. Lol! Happy dancing to you!
I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this, but the notification fell through the cracks somehow. Thank you for the kind feedback. I'm hoping to put out a few more videos this summer!
Overall, the video is very useful. Next time don't wear the same color pants, makes it harder to figure whose leg is where. And next time talk slower. Most of the verbal direction is unintelligible.
Hi! I'm so sorry for the slow reply. Thanks for the feedback. You are quite correct on all points. I just wanted to point out that the bulk of the videos on this channel were never meant to be full instructional videos for the general public. They were simply meant to be very quick little reviews for the people who had taken that particular class in person. Theoretically, the students had already learned the material and the videos were just meant to jog their memories. I have in the past year started creating actual instructional videos where we used lapel microphones, and the video quality itself is far better. If you are currently studying things like dips and drops, you will probably find the new videos a bit too basic, but hopefully with time, the library will include more advanced material that you will possibly find useful. Thanks for watching, and happy dancing.

First comment! Fantastic job guys ;)
Thanks so much!
Thanks for your sharing.
I know this is very late in coming, but thank you for your comment. I will be releasing new videos very soon. Hopefully you'll find those useful too!
Question - Isn't that song cha cha music?
Well, thanks for that info. Any chance that you could list the steps of your routine. Just trying to learn Amercian VW. Do you have any other postings? Very good!!
Thanks ever so much. So, would you say you're learning the NDCA American Smooth syllabus or is this a social version??
Hi again! This is not the NDCA American Smooth syllabus, although there is some overlap, and all of the elements are allowed in NDCA sanctioned events. I actually teach from the BallroomDancers.com syllabus. I find it to be the most sensible syllabus, as it is component based, rather than amalgamation based. In a way, the amalgamation based syllabi are useful for creating competition routines easily, but I like my students to be able to create their own patterns and routines. As social dancers, the more flexible they are regarding the structure of the dances the better, and as competitors, they will be able to be more creative with their routines. I like my competitors to be able to go out dancing and not just get stuck on one routine.
Sounds like quickstep, but dvida musics are good enough for this kind of routines...
Excellent dance teacher. Thank you for posting.
